It is August again and so we begin another year of activity for the Fall Line Artist Guild. In the past year, we had a great art show and six interesting bi‐monthly meetings where we enjoyed seeing and hearing about a variety of art forms from local artisans as well as from presenters who were out‐of‐towners. We are looking forward to having an even better year beginning with our first meeting on September 14th featuring local artist Elaine Burge and her colorful paintings. We are also making plans to start working on our upcoming art show which will be open on October 8th, 9th, and 10th at our usual venue in the old Belk Building.  We hope everyone who displayed with us at the last show has been working hard to surprise and delight us with many more beautiful artistic creations and photographs. Please invite your other artist friends to join our organization and share their works with the community. 

There has been a need to make changes in the roles of some members due to illnesses. Sara Andrews has done an outstanding job with the art shows we have had in the past and still plans to help this year. However she has asked that Gene Renfroe be the Gallery Chairman this year since she is still dealing with medical treatments. Linda Query’s surgery and continued treatments have made it necessary for her to give up her position as Treasurer. Chris Hutchings has agreed to take over her duties for the remainder of her term. We are in the process of getting everything changed over to him and are changing our FLAG address to a permanent address at the Sandersville Post Office. You will note the new address on the 2015‐2016 form for membership. 

 A little reminder to everyone: Each August brings the time for membership renewal. If you have not already sent in your renewal form, please do so as soon as possible. In fact, you may rejoin at our meeting September 14th. We are looking forward to seeing all of you at the program and encourage you to bring a friend to see Elaine’s unique work and to enjoy refreshments while visiting with Elaine and other FLAG members.

FLAG Gallery Spaces at Sandersville City Hall and the Washington County Commissioners office have been in use for a year. Starting in July 2014 the spaces are available for FLAG members to display and sell his or her art in a public space.  

Currently Dale Anderson is showing in City Hall and Carla Hutchings is showing in the Commissioner’s office. Both artists have sold one piece each at the time of this writing. Congratulations to Dale and Carla. Their artwork will remain in place until the end of September. 

The time is now for FLAG members to begin submitting art for the final quarter of 2015. The annual FLAG art show for the Kaolin Festival requires art created in the past three years, the gallery space has no time requirement. Even if an artist wishes to show a previously shown piece, it is allowed. 

Many compliments have been received on the display of FLAG member art which livens up the respective gallery spaces and the lives of those who view the art. Don’t hesitate to display your work.

The Fall Line Artist Guild welcomes you! FLAG offers membership to any artist, amateur or professional, or art enthusiast who lives in the Fall Line Area of Georgia and supports the goal of promoting the visual arts. You can choose the type of annual membership that suits you best:

A walk of just a few minutes will take you from the main branch of the Geo. D. Warthen Bank to the fine art studio‐on‐the‐square of Elaine Burge, speaker at the September meeting of the Fall Line Artist Guild. Elaine’s acrylic on canvas paintings are filled with colors that draw the viewer from across the room to enjoy details of her people, animals, landscapes and flowers. The artist lives in Riddleville with her husband, three dogs and the many chickens that find their way into some particularly brightly‐colored compositions. Elaine says, “Life is full of rules; my only rule in my work is to have fun with it and hope that the viewer can tell that I did just that!” 

The Fall Line Artist Guild invites you to attend the September 14, 2015, meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Operations Center Meeting Room of the Geo. D. Warthen Bank at 216 North Harris Street in Sandersville. Elaine Burge will present a guided tour through examples of her work that include portraits of historical figures, plants and animals and images that are abstract. Find out what it takes for her to maintain a studio for work and meeting with clients, and how she stays inspired to paint new work and commissions. 

The Fall Line Artist Guild is currently welcoming new members of all ages who are artists, those who want to learn new techniques and new media and those who enjoy the visual arts and want to support those who make art. Refreshments and an opportunity to chat with members end the bimonthly meetings on a light note.

Time is drawing near for the October Art Show. Keep those pens, pencils, and paint brushes moving. We need to have a lot of different things in the show. Our time and talents will be on parade. We can have a wonderful show because we have so many talented artists. Gene and the Gallery Committee are working hard with the final items we need to make this a success. The dates for the show are October 8th, 9th, and 10th. Hours on October 8th will be 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. We will open again at 5:00 p.m. for the Business After Hours event sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Hours on October 9th will be 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on October 10th, parade day. 

If you have any furniture or accessories that we can use for props, please let me or Gene know as soon as possible. The staging of the show is very important in keeping the public interest stimulated. People will come to view and buy if it is pleasing to see. 

If you don’t paint or draw, you can still be a big help with the show and other projects. I had mentioned that we might be interested in having a mini show at Twin City Country Club. It would not take much to do this. We need to talk it up to the public and keep them informed of the creative artistry in our county. 

We can also have another Christmas show or have classes to teach crafts. We have very talented people who can teach classes. Do you know how to “tat”, can you make jewelry, can you carve wood, and do you know enough about your camera? These are some of the things that we could promote to members as well as to the public. 

Everyone has some kind of talent. It can be small or large. It can be actual working, teaching, or supporting with your time. FLAG needs your participation. Everyone has something to offer. Let’s get it going as we approach the fall season. Be ready to join in and support our projects for the success of the cultural arts. 

As most of you know, Sam Goodrich, one of FLAG's original members, passed away Christmas Day, 2014. Sam cared a lot about animals‐especially his cats and the feral cats that would show up at his home. He developed a close relationship with the Sandersville/Washington County Animal Shelter. Upon his death he requested that donations be made in his memory to the shelter. Sam and his art teacher, Tonia Marynell, often talked about doing an art auction to raise money for the shelter. 

With the permission of Sam's beloved wife Paula and his daughter Deborah, the 1st Sam Goodrich Art Auction to Benefit the Sandersville/Washington County Animal Shelter will take place on Saturday, February 6, 2016. Susan Lewis and Tonia Marynell are working with County Commissioner Chairman Horace Daniel and County Administrator Chris Hutchings on this project. They met with employees of the shelter to discuss what they needed the most so the money raised could go towards paying for it. "This way we know the money will go to pay for what we are raising it for." stated Tonia. Each year a different goal will be set. We already know what we are going to purchase, but we are still looking on what it will cost at this time. 

Susan Lewis and Tonia Marynell are in charge of the Benefit Auction. They will announce more information on the FLAG Facebook page as details become available. Right now they are compiling the list of artists who wish to participate in this auction. The work needs to be marketable and never seen before in public locally. We prefer originals but will accept archival giclee prints. We also welcome photography, pottery, ceramics, woodworking, baskets and any other handcrafted items. We ask that you donate a piece that is a marketable example of your best work. Benefit auctions like this are great venues to acquire new clients so having a sample of your best work seen is great advertising! Artists will be allowed to have business cards and flyers placed by their work as people view the pieces. People will be charged $10.00 to come in and view the art and make silent bids on the pieces. We ask artists to give us a starting price on each of their pieces when they deliver it. Susan and Tonia already have artists as far away as Poland donating their work for this worthy cause to help OUR Shelter Animals and to celebrate the life and memory of our dear friend Sam Goodrich. This is going to be an annual event. We do hope FLAG members will participate. We are accepting art now until January 25, 2016. For more information contact Tonia Marynell at toniamarynell@att.net.

YOU  AR E   I N V I T ED   TO   TH E  ART   E XH I B I T  “ T h e   C i v i l  Wa r   i n  Wash i n g t o n   Co un t y ”   Members of FLAG are invited to attend the opening and celebration of the first phase of the acquisition, by The Brown House Museum, of the permanent art exhibit “The Civil War in Washington County.” The event will be held on Monday, October the 5, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at The Brown House and is free to the public. Refreshments will be served. 

The subject matter for the show is taken from written and verbal accounts of the time in November in 1864 when Sherman and 62,000 Union soldiers occupied Washington County on their historic March to the Sea. The long range plan for the exhibit is to add work each year until a more comprehensive visual and written history of this important historical period of our county’s history is acquired. All contributing artists will be from Washington County and the exhibit will be on continuous permanent display at the Brown House Museum. This years’ exhibit is comprised of the work of participating artists from the 2014 exhibit and four new pieces of art work. We are very pleased to announce the artists of this year’s new work. They are Lauren Adams, Alan King, and Bryant Jordan.   

New and improved catalogs will be offered for $5.00 each. The catalog will include a guide for the exhibit, a list of the artists and their work, documented historical information of the subject matter of the art work, a cross reference of the art work with Civil War artifacts, a notes section and a works cited section for those who would like to do more research. A complimentary list of art work and artists will be available for anyone not wishing to purchase a catalog. 

In addition to the opening on the 5th of October, the exhibit will be open during regular museum hours with the exception of the week of October 19 through the 23 when the Brown House will be reserved for school tours and therefore closed to the public until 3 p.m. each day. On Saturday, October 24, the day of the “Occupation of Sandersville,” The Brown House Museum will, in addition to the art exhibit “The Civil War in Washington County,” host an interesting array of living history demonstrations from the 1864 period. The public is invited and all events are free.   

The Brown House Museum is sponsoring a bus tour of important Washington County Civil War sites, narrated by Rick Joslyn, on Saturday, October 31, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The unique and interesting tour will include lunch and is $50.00 per person. Contact Frances Veal at 478‐552‐3403 for additional information and tickets.

August is almost over but we need to really get our membership campaign going. This is our only money maker. Membership renewals need to be done as soon as possible. The Art Show is coming up and we want our artists to be a part of the show. We need everyone to be included. You do not have to be an artist to be a member. If you are not an artist, but support the arts, we need you. If you are a business and support the arts, we need you. If you are a student just learning about art, we need you. We can always use a patron or two as well.
