Sister Patricia McNamara, SND

ASister Marie William Scattergood, SND

August 10, 1921–March 19, 2011

The Annual Notre Dame Academy Alumnae (K Street) Reunion Mass and Luncheon occurred on Saturday, April 2 in Silver Spring, Md. Alumnae from as far away as the Bahamas attended.

The 50th Reunion Class, pictured above, had classmates come from South Carolina, Michigan, West Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Mexico. Some hadn’t been together since graduation!

The oldest alumna to attend was Isabelle Naughten O’Hearn, who graduated in 1932. As you can see from the picture to the left she looks great and stays on the go!

During the luncheon a class ring, still looking shiny and new, was brought by an alumna and passed around for all to admire and reminisce.

Over 200 people attended this year’s gathering, including some from the ’80s who vowed to share what a great time they had with their classmates and to ask them to join the group next year. The 2012 event will be held on April 21; those classes whose graduation date ended in a “2” or

“7” will be the special reunion classes. For further information, please contact Rita Lawrence McLaughlin ’64 at [email protected].

We have some great news to share! SOAR! (Support

Our Aging Religious) will be providing an emergency

funding grant of up to $25,000 to assist Sr. Margaret

“Peg” Geary. This is a result of seeing the story of

Sr. Peg, (her weekend spent in the elevator) on CNN.

Sr. Kathleen Lunsmann, IHM, President of SOAR!,

commented on the “grace with which you handled

this” to Sr. Peg when they met. Traditionally, one

congregation is chosen to receive a public grant

award (complete with an oversized check) at their

annual dinner. This year’s event will be on November 4, 2011, and will be held

at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium on Constitution Avenue in Washington,

D.C. Sr. Kathleen has invited the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur to be that

congregation! We will be given tickets as well as having one of our Sisters (surely

Sr. Peg) make comments of gratitude at the dinner.

Meet Sister Elizabeth Ann McFadden

It’s nice to put a face with a voice … Many of you have received a phone call from Sr. Elizabeth Ann McFadden thanking you for your generous gift to our Sisters.

She is our “volunteer par excellence!” Comments from our friends and donors are all very positive! In fact, one monthly donor sent Sister a note as well as a check to the development program just because she so enjoyed speaking to her!

One of our generous donors sent this lovely note after speaking to Sr. Elizabeth Ann: “I received a telephone call from one of the sisters this week thanking me for my continued support. The sisters don’t need to thank me, I need to thank them for their lifetime of sacrifice and dedication to Christian education.”

Above, Sr. Pat Hanway ’56, Sr. Teresa McElwee, Candi Corbin Sicoli ’62 and Frances McElwee Bloom ’62 warmly welcomed guests at the annual Dames at the Dunes event. Below, Sr. Theresa gives the keynote address.

Top left, Isabelle Naughten O’Hearn, NDA Class of 1932; bottom left, a class ring brought back memories for many.

Save the Date Trinity Preparatory School, Class of 1961, 50th

Reunion will be held on September 24, 2011. For further information, please

contact Carol Ann Staab Treuth at 410 747 1555 or [email protected]

This year’s Dames at the Dunes was a thrilling success! Guest speaker Sr. Teresa McElwee (formerly Sr. John Christine) spoke of her life after Moylan, especially the work of the Sisters in Apopka, Fla. The silent auction proceeds were more than double last year’s auction and will benefit our Sisters in active ministries as well as those in ministries of prayer.

donor HIGHlights

In Praise of Our Teachers

Cheryl L. Brown met the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur early in her life. Her family moved to Washington, D.C. due to a career opportunity for her father, a pharmacist. She was educated by the Sisters at St. Martin’s School, T Street, from kindergarten through eighth grade. She has three sisters; two who joined her at the Academy of Notre Dame, K Street, in Washington, D.C. There were 65 students in her graduating class. Cheryl remembers exactly what the clicks of the clicker meant—not bad for someone who just celebrated her 45th reunion! For those who don’t remember, and according to Cheryl (since I am one of the ones who don’t) one click meant “OK,” two clicks meant “pay attention, something was pending,” and three clicks meant you were in trouble!

Cheryl continued her education at the Catholic University of America, earning a B.A. in sociology and her master’s in criminology. Her career has been with the Department of the Navy, where she has risen through the ranks in the finance division. Her current title is Supervisor, Financial Management Analyst. She is extremely diligent in her work; her work week at times encompasses 60 hours.

Cheryl is a family-oriented individual; she is extremely close to her parents, sisters, nieces and nephews. Cheryl is one of a group of stalwart NDA graduates who continually plan events for fellow K Street alumnae. She was on the All School Reunion Committee as well as being a permanent “fixture” on the Annual Reunion Mass and Luncheon committee.

She volunteered in a partnership program with D.C. public schools (Bowen Elementary) for 17 years and today she is very involved in her church, St. Anthony of Padua, spending her time in programs for the children of the parish, and is lead usher at the Saturday Vigil Mass.

Cheryl states that she is most appreciative of the education provided by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. She shows that appreciation through her generous gifts to the development program. She also notes that she feels that others should see the value of the gifts they have been given by the Sisters and act upon them.

All those who know Cheryl, both friends and Sisters of Notre Dame speak glowing of Cheryl’s love and devotion to all things Notre Dame. We are proud to have Cheryl as a true friend and supporter!

As you know, we have a lovely assortment of prayer cards suitable for many occasions. We are very grateful to our friends who request and use them. Unfortunately, the costs of printing and postage have risen for us. If your circumstances allow, would you please consider a donation of 10.00 as you send in your request for cards? We thank you for your consideration and generosity.

The Sisters’ Gift: Cheryl L. Brown

By supporting the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, I follow the example of my mother, a retired teacher, who told me, “They educated my children.” From my own perspective as a retired teacher, I realize the great gifts the Sisters gave me.

The Sisters of Notre Dame gave their lives to provide me and many others with a strong academic foundation and a grounding in faith and prayers that brings life a spiritual center.

The Sisters’ example influenced my teaching style. They presented an organized, attractive educational environment with an integrated curriculum enhanced by the arts. The Sisters exemplified the power of positive presentation and held high expectations for achievement. Faith must have helped them manage those large classes—I find classes of 30 students challenging!

I remember all the extras: weekly report cards, uniforms, class newspapers, choral singing, hymn books, field day, bake sales, May altars, processions, the Children’s Mass, novenas, and preparation for First Communion, Confirmation and graduation. In recognizing the dedication, accomplishments and inspiration of the Sisters of Notre Dame, I express my gratitude.

– Barbara Hunt, New York City

I met the Sisters of Notre Dame when my aunt convinced my mother that she must send her children to Maryvale. A new group of Sisters were coming and we just had to be a part of the great new school. My teacher was Sr. Ann Patricia. She taught me to read. What a gift!

I do remember one day she wanted all the children to tell their parent’s names. I told Sr. Ann Patricia that my father’s name was Hammond. She then asked me my mother’s name, but I did not know my mother’s name. She then asked me what my father called her. I said, “Oats!” She said, laughing, “Mother’s Oats!” I did not laugh. In fact, I was so embarrassed I burst into tears. A memorable moment for me.”

– Fran Dugan, Baltimore

I was privileged to have received my education from the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur from first grade through college and am very grateful for their superior teaching. There was always an atmosphere of loving attention,of respect for all; at the same time there was challenge, encouragement and insistence on high standards. Graduates of their schools frequently speak of how well each was prepared for further study and for employment and of the confidence this preparation gave them all through their life.
