‘Coaching  is  unlocking  people’s  poten3al  to  maximize  their  own  performance’

(Timothy  Gallwey)

What  is  coaching?

Performance  =  Poten3al  -‐  Interference

As  you  define  it!

‘Coaching  is  chiefly  about  discovery,  awareness,  and  choice’

(Laura  Whitworth  and  colleagues)

How  coaching  works

•  Goal  oriented  •  Asks  Powerful  ques3ons  •  Provokes  awareness,  choice,  trust  •  Experiments  through  ac3on  and  inquiry  •  Works  with  the  whole  person

NOTE  :  A  coach  does  not  ....  Just  listen  ….  just  empathise….  analyse  ….or  advise

Your  experience  ….what  if?

What  is  your  experience  now?

How  do  you  want  it  to  be?

What  small  step  can  you  take  to  get  closer?    What  can  you  do?  How  can  you  be?

What’s  important  …  what  if?

What  would  it  enable  if  you  moved  more

towards  one  or  the  other?  What  would  give  you  energy?  What’s  one  ac9on  you  could  take?

For  yourself?

For  other  people?

“It  was  an  experience  that  I  was  a  li]le  dubious  about  ini3ally  but  as  I  learnt  to  'take  part'  has  been  one  of  the  most  valuable  programmes  that  I  have  par3cipated  in.    It  has  been  helpful  in  giving  me  skills  both  in  my  work  and  also  my  personal  life  and  the  sharing  of  experience  both  as  a  coach  and  a  'coachee'    allowed  me  to  experience  both  sides  of  the  coin  so  to  speak.”

Page 12: Let's Talk Research Annual Conference - 24th-25th September 2014 (Dr Will Medd)

“I  now  have  skills  that  will  help  me  to  challenge  and  guide  my  colleagues  and  also  help  me  as  a  person  to  think  differently.  I  now  look  for  op3ons  quite  naturally  and  do  not  see  everything  as  a  barrier  but  as  a  challenge  which  can  be  approached  from  every  angle.  I  am  learning  to  'feel'  more  confident  and  less  'powerless'  and  also  to  think  about  my  'gremlins'  as  being  controllable  -‐  these  haven't  gone  away  but  I  have  skills  to  control  them.”

Page 13: Let's Talk Research Annual Conference - 24th-25th September 2014 (Dr Will Medd)

“I  have  found  the  whole  experience  to  have  helped  me  in  ways  that  I  would  never  have  an3cipated.  I  would  recommend  the  programme  certainly  in  the  context  in  which  this  has  been  offered  to  my  group  but  to  be  prepared  to  realise  how  powerful  coaching  can  be  in  both  your  work  and  personal  life.  Thank  you  so  very  much  for  allowing  me  to  par3cipate”

Page 14: Let's Talk Research Annual Conference - 24th-25th September 2014 (Dr Will Medd)

“I  have  found  the  programme  of  immense  help  and  one  of  the  best  things  I  have  ever  done  for  my  personal  and  professional  development.”

 What  perspec7ve  are  you  taking?

‘Holding  back’

Where  do  you  need  to  hold  back  less?  Where  do  you  need  to  hold  back  more?  What  will  you  do  to  make  the  difference?

"If  you  say  it  is  not  possible,  then  you  have  closed  a  door.  If  you  say  it  is  possible,  you  have  also  closed  a  door.  If  you  say  'let's  find  out',  then  you  are  open  to  it,  eager  to  find  out"

 (Krishnamur3)
