What is the Southwest Virginia Professional Education Consortium?

• Over 70 schools• 10 school divisions• Four institutions of higher education• 80 Lead Clinical Faculty• Almost 1400 Clinical Faculty

Brief Historical Overview• 1988-1990 (VDOE) funds first Clinical Faculty Initiative• 1998 VA Legislature Allocation $300,000/year to Statewide

Clinical Faculty• 2000 NCATE Required Training of Cooperative Teachers• 2003 VDOE Expands the Clinical Faculty Grant Requirements

to Include With Research-Based Schools Mentor Programs• 2008 Requirement of Level 1 and Level II Training• Spring 2008 Pilot Mentor Program• Spring 2011 Grantees’ Conference• Summer 2011: Dream Team (Material and Redesign

Goals

1. Develop a cadre of clinical faculty who are exemplary models of effective teaching and strong mentors for student teachers (teacher candidates).

2. Develop and nurture leadership abilities and exemplary practice in clinical faculty.

3. Facilitate greater cooperation and communication among consortium members.

4. Create a professional learning community that fosters learning to teach, and the development of school cultures that promote life-long learning for all members of the communities.

5. Support school/university collaboration that involves clinical faculty and preservice teachers in efforts that impact student learning and well-being.
