Lets Review……
Magma ChamberLies inside the earth.
Stores hot, melted rock called magma.
Central VentOpening at the top
of the volcano in which lava, pieces of rock and other materials pour out of.
ConduitVertical channel or
pipe in which magma moves up before it reaches the surface of the earth.
CraterBowl-shaped hole
which forms at the top of the volcano.
Lava FlowLava is very hot
when it erupts out of a volcano. The lava flows down the sides of the volcano. As it moves, the lava cools and hardens.
The Three Major Types of Volcanoes
Volcano number 1
Volcano number 2
Volcano number 3
•Volcanoes are classified by:•Their shape•The way they erupt•The materials from which they are formed
•There are three main types of volcanoes that we need to learn about. They are:•Cinder Cone Volcanoes•Shield Volcanoes•Composite Volcanoes
Cinder Cone VolcanoesCone shaped with very
steep sidesRelatively small-
usually less than 300m (984ft)
Built from lava fragments called cinders
Very little lavaEx: Paricutin in Mexico
and Stromboli in Italy
Shield VolcanoesLooks like a shieldLarge mountains with
gentle slopesFormed from lava that
flows slowly from a crack in the Earth’s curst
Ex: Mauna Loa located in Hawaii is the largest volcano on Earth
Composite VolcanoesLooks like and upside-
down V and has steep sides
Formed from the most explosive volcanoes
Eruptions usually occur without warning and can be very destructive
Layers of rock and lavaEx: Mount Fuji which is
located in Japan
What type of volcano am I?• I have large mountains with gentle slopes
Answer: Shield Volcano• I am built from lava fragments
called cindersAnswer: Cinder Cone Volcano
What type of volcano am I?• I am made up of layers of rock
and lavaAnswer: Cinder Cone Volcano• I produce very little magmaAnswer: Cinder Cone Volcano
What type of volcano am I?• I look like an upside-down VAnswer: Composite Volcano• I erupt usually without warning
and can be very destructiveAnswer: Composite Volcano
What type of volcano am I?• I am relatively small in size-
usually less than 300mAnswer: Cinder Cone Volcano• Formed from lava that flows
slowly from a crack in the Earth’s crust
