WHAT IS A MOC?

The student body first referred to themselves as “Mocs” in the early 1900s. In 1996, the University decided to adopt the state bird of Tennessee, the mockingbird, as its new mascot while incorporating the strong regional imagery of Chattanooga’s vast railroad history. The mascot, Scrappy, was born and named after legendary football coach A.C. “Scrappy” Moore. The mockingbird is known as a fierce protector of its nest and environment.

There’s going to college and then there’s going to college in Chattanooga. The Scenic City is the perfect college town. Its got a small town feel with midsize city amenities. In the past few decades, Chattanooga has transformed itself into a mecca for the outdoors, arts and entrepreneurship. Located right next to downtown, the UTC campus is the perfect place to live, study and take advantage of all the great things the city has to offer.

Since its founding in 1886, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga has developed an institutional excellence which rests on an unusual blend of the private and public traditions of American education. For 83 years, the University was a private school. Three years after its founding, the University operating under the name of Grant University. In 1907, the name University of Chattanooga was adopted. In

1969, the University of Chattanooga, Zion College and Chattanooga City College merged with the UT higher education system, to form

the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

This system is used for the delivery of online and hybrid courses and programs, as well as for the enhancement of face-to-face courses and campus organizations. The UTC Library is the academic and intellectual heart of the campus, giving you the necessary support for success. Here you’ll find professional librarians and staff to help you with your research, great study spaces and access to a large collection of scholarly resources and materials. The library features state-of-the-art services such as a full-service multimedia studio, the Writing and Communication Center and the largest computer lab on campus.

Offering free help with papers, presentations and speeches for any class at any stage of the writing process. Peer consultants from across disciplines are trained to help students brainstorm, outline, organize ideas, develop arguments, learn a particular citation style and practice speeches or presentations. Consultants also offer assistance with grammar and style. Our goal is for our writers to leave the WCC with a plan for revising their work and with a higher level of confidence in their writing.

This facility offers free tutoring in math courses: 1010, 1130, 1830, 1710, 1720, 1730, 1950 and 2100. The Math Plaza also provides testing services for courses.

The IT Solutions Center provides hands-on technical support for the entire student body, no appointment necessary. Examples of services provided by the IT Solutions Center include but are not limited to: network registrations, malware/virus removal, software installations and hardware diagnostics/repair.

Offering a variety of mental health services, including individual and group counseling, medication management, consultations and referrals, and prevention/education programs. The top ten reasons students take advantage of counseling are anxiety, depression, family relationships, adjustment disorders, self-care, selfesteem issues, peer relationships, romantic relationships, academic distress and suicidal ideation. Our services are confidential and free for students—with the exception of a minimum fee for medication management.

FERPA AUTHORIZATION TO DISCLOSE INFORMATION IN EDUCATION RECORDS utc.edu/records

Under The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), students maintain control of who, outside the University, has access to their educational information. Students can sign the FERPA Release Form to give another individual access to their information. The FERPA Release applies to Bursar, Financial Aid, Records, Student Development and faculty teaching the student’s courses. Additional guidelines are on the Records webpage.

All vehicles parked at UTC must be registered with Parking Services. Individuals log in to the parking portal and register as many as three vehicles. There are multiple types of parking that can be purchased.

• General (Gold): allows the individual to park in any spot in a general lot.

• Reserved (Blue): allows the individual to park in any spot in a reserved or general lot.

• Motorcycle: allows for parking at a discounted rate.

• Housing: some housing complexes have dedicated parking lots for their residents.

• Accessible: permanent and temporary accessible parking is available throughout campus.

Serving as an advocate for student interests and SGA works to constantly seek student input. Every student is a member and is represented by the Student Senate. The Student Senate provides initial approval of student organizations, is a link between the student body and the administration, enacts legislation and offers valuable functions and service for the community. SGA also appoints student leaders to University Committees ranging from dining services and to curriculum and honor court. SGA’s Freshmen Senate fosters young leaders for a future in SGA and student organization leadership roles.

Northern mockingbirds are solitary and territorial. During the nesting season, they are often very aggressive; they often attack other animals in defense of their territory, including animals as large as cats, dogs and humans.
