AAA: Fighting for a radical alternativeUnlike the super rich 1%, the desires

of the 99% are modest. We need areliable job with a living wage and an af-fordable roof over our heads. Whenyoung, we need a properly-funded edu-cation system and, when sick, a decenthealth service.

By Cllr. Cian Prendiville

The establishment parties say we 'cannotafford' such a society; we must keep 'tight-ening our belts', so as not to threaten their'recovery'. In fact, the entire 'deficit' only ex-ists because every year the governmenthand €8 billion to the bankers in interest-only payments on odious debts. Havingpaid for the bankers’ crisis, we are now pay-ing for their recovery too. This is the injus-tice we can expect so long as capitalistpolicies dominate.

Imagine if instead this €8bn was invested inpublic services. Think what could be done ifthe wealth of the 1% was under democraticpublic control; used for the needs of themillions, not the greed of the millionaires.

But the establishment parties don't careabout ordinary people. Just look at the con-tinued existence of direct provision and the8th amendment. On three occasions sincethe tragic death of Savita HalappanavarFG/Labour voted against repealing theblanket ban on abortion, despite countlessopinion polls demanding a referendum.

The resounding YES to Marriage Equalityshows working class people want a pro-gressive, secular society. It is the political es-tablishment who are standing in the way.

The huge anti-water charges boy-cott shows how an organised, peo-ple power movement can takethem on. That is what the AAA isabout - bringing together workers, young people and the unem-ployed to fight for realchange. Get involvedtoday!
