This History special will profile different periods in New Jersey’s history, with Mary Alice Williams providing an introduction with highlights of historical events in each time period. Who lived in this region before it was colonized? Raven Santana will explore what life was like for the Native American indigenous people before European settlers arrived, how they lived during the colonial era, and how they struggled to maintain their identity through the years up until now. Another segment concentrates on the Underground Railroad and the importance of New Jersey as a part of that pathway to freedom, as explained by NJTV News correspondent Michael Hill. What is the history of sports in our state? We look at the first organized baseball game being played in Hoboken to the first college football game between Rutgers and Princeton. NJTV News correspondents David Cruz and John Reitmeyer highlight New Jersey’s role in the development of modern sport, and dwell on some personal memories these two reporters have. Finally, Chief Political Correspondent Michael Aron talks suburbanization and white flight. Aron takes a look at what factors led to the dramatic demographic shift in the state’s urban population centers, the turmoil that ensued in those cities, and how those cities are faring now when it seems like the trend may be reversing as wealth is beginning to accumulate in urban areas once again. AUGUST 2019

Did you know there are nearly 300 species of squirrels in the world? How about that a squirrel’s front teeth never stop growing to counteract the wear from relentless chomping? Discover the extraordinary abilities of these creatures in Nature: A Squirrel’s Guide to Success — from the brainy fox squirrel’s incredible memory, to the acrobatic gray squirrel, whose tree-top leaps are the basis for new designs in robotics.

And see the world through the eyes of an orphan red squirrel called Billy, as he grows up and develops all the skills he will need to be released back into the wild.

NJTV’s In Your Neighborhood is back, and is taking it to the classroom, focusing on the Garden State’s important and diverse history.

The program won’t be complete of course, without a profile of the winner of NJTV’s second annual Tourism Tournament, currently being held on Facebook! Have you voted yet? The semi-finals are coming up fast, with a winner to be announced on August 11!
