The Flying Eye Hospital
REPORTER Iโm Jenny Kim from BNN. Iโm here on the ORBIS plane, โthe
flying eye hospital.โ It travels to many underdeveloped countries
to provide free eye surgery. A group of doctors and nurses
dedicate their lives to the eye health of poor people. Iโm here to
interview four of ORBISโs crew members. Letโs first meet Dr.
Cherwek, director of ORBIS International. How do you do, Dr.
Cherwek? Iโm very pleased to meet you.
DR. CHERWEK Nice to meet you, too, Jenny.
REPORTER How did the ORBIS project start?
DR. CHERWEK The idea of a flying eye hospital started in the 1970s with
Dr. David Paton, an American eye doctor. The idea became a
reality in 1982 when an airline company donated a plane. Since
then, we to 86 countries and treated about seven
million patients.
REPORTER Thatโs amazing. What makes ORBISโs work successful?
DR. CHERWEK I think itโs successful because we have a great team. We
have 21 team members from nine different countries. We are
always facing the challenges of the work together. Thatโs the
foundation of the success of our work.
REPORTER What made you volunteer for this work?
DR. CHERWEK I do like being a doctor, but ever since I was a child,
Iโve loved flying. If I were not a doctor, I be working
as a pilot. On this ORBIS plane, I can do the two things I like,
I mean, treating patients and flying.

REPORTER Linda, you are the head nurse. What do you like most about
your work?
LINDA I like meeting nice people and seeing different countries. But what I
like most about this work is seeing patients who are able to see
again after recovering from surgery.
REPORTER Hi, Jinsuk. I was glad to find a Korean nurse on the plane.
Can you tell us what made you volunteer for ORBIS?
JINSUK Iโve always wanted to help poor people. You donโt have to be rich
to help others. You just need a warm heart.
REPORTER Hi, Dr. Del Monte. I hear there are so many patients who need
your help. How do you select patients for surgery?
DR. DEL MONTE We select the patients that doctors in their countries
cannot treat. Sometimes, the doctors do not have the required
skills. We also teach them how to do difficult eye surgeries.
REPORTER The warm-hearted ORBIS people try to bring light to those who
live in the dark. Letโs give a big hand to the crew members of
the flying eye hospital. This is Jenny Kim from BNN, reporting
from the ORBIS plane.
