Math Duckling dice game -
Play a number game
individually or with
friends.
Gross motor patterns -
Make patterns while
pretending to be pond
animals. Hop like a frog,
waddle like a duck, and
repeat. Explore different
types of patterns with
different animal move-
ments. (TF)
Pond number mats -
Add the right amount of
pond animals to the
number mats.
Duck pond math - Ex-
plore addition with
ducks. Modify depend-
ing the needs of each
child, giving as much
assistance as needed.
Hopping color math -
Roll the color die. Com-
plete the graph using
crayons, markers, or
frogs.
In the Small Small Pond
LESSON ACTIVITIES - EXPLANATION
Science Observation - Set up a
real-life pond observa-
tion. Use fish, frogs, tad-
poles, insects, or pond
water. Keep a science
journal of what is ob-
served through the
week. (TF)
Pond facts - Read a
nonfiction book about
ponds. Record facts
you learn in a science
journal.
Pond habitat - Create
your own pond habitat.
This could be a real
habitat, a diorama, or
another creative display
that you work on to-
gether. Try to discuss
facts you've learned
about ponds and how
they are represented in
the creation.
Winter on the pond -
Research how different
pond animals get ready
for the winter.
Pond sorting - Sort print-
able cards based on
pond life or not pond
life.
Literacy Action words - There are
a lot of verbs (action
words) used in this story.
Read the story together
and make a list of the
action words you hear.
Then try to act out some
of them.
Initial sound quack - Say
a word. Kids will quack
like a duck for each
word that starts with /d/.
(TF)
Word hop - Say a simple
sentence. Hop like a
frog for each word in a
sentence. Can also ex-
plore blending like this
activity.
Frog rhyming - Create a
list of words that rhyme
with frog. Use magnetic
letters (or printable frog
letters) to explore how
changing the beginning
of the word creates a
new rhyming word.
Emergent reader -
Choose a version of the
printable reader to ex-
plore animals that live in
or around the pond.
Other Pond sensory small
world - Create a simple
small world sensory play
with water, pond ani-
mals, and other items
on-hand. (TF)
Pond animal process art
- Use pond animal toys,
dip them in paint, and
have them move all
over paper to create
art. Use this activity as
inspiration. (TF)
Trip to the Pond - Take a
trip to a local pond.
Write out a scavenger
hunt checklist before-
hand. (TF)
Pond painting - Look at
pictures of real pond
environments. Use oil
pastels to draw your
own. Paint over the pas-
tels with watercolors for
a mixed-media effect.
Duck race sensory -
Have a fine motor sen-
sory race with ducks on
the pond. (TF)
(TF) - Toddler-friendly ideas that would work when home with children of different ages.

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES
These activities would work well as centers or work boxes during free play time. They’re
meant to allow children the chance to play, explore, and practice preschool skills on
their own. Children may still need some assistance at times, of course. They’re broken
down by subject area for reference. (TF) =Toddler-Friendly
Math
Pond number cards - Use the
number cards for exploring
numerical order and one-to-
one correspondence.
Pond patterns - Create and/or
complete patterns using the
printable.
Literacy
Story box - Put together a sim-
ple story box or basket for the
book. Use blue felt for the wa-
ter and brown/green felt for
the land. Add some pond ani-
mals and blue glass gems. Use
them to retell the book. (TF)
Letter cards - Explore alpha-
betical order, match upper-
case and lowercase letters, or
make words with the letter
cards.
Science
Pond animals - Draw pictures
of pond animals. Use real pic-
tures of animals as reference.
Compare waters - Put pond
water in a jar. Put plain tap
water in a jar. Compare the
waters and make observa-
tions. (TF)
Sensory
Pond play dough - Create a
pond environment with play
dough, toys, and loose parts.
(TF)
Small world pond - Create a
simple sensory small world to
play with outside or inside. (TF)
Block Play
Pond animals - Use Lego or
pattern blocks to create pond
animals.
Giant pond - Use blocks and a
blue tarp or tablecloth to cre-
ate a large pond. Add pond
animal toys. (TF)
Arts and Crafts
Pond mosaics - Use different
shades of blue paper cut into
squares (or ripped into pieces)
to create a pond. Draw ani-
mals or add stickers.

The Duckling Dice Game BLACK AND WHITE VERSION – The dice game is meant for 2 players. Each player chooses a different color crayon, and the players share one paper. Player 1 rolls the die, then colors in the appropriate number. Player 2 then takes her turn. They go back and forth until all numbers have been colored in. The player with the most numbers colored is the winner of the game (and can take the paper home).
COLOR VERSION – This math game can be played individually or in a group. Children begin with a laminated duckling play mat, colorful unifix cubes (or some other counters), and 1 or 2 dice. Children roll the dice and add the appropriate number of unifix cubes. This game is discussed in the following post -- http://fun-a-day.com/make-way-for-ducklings-preschool-number-game/.
