GOALS
• GOAL of the lesson is an outcome.
• GOAL should be demonstrable.
• GOAL should be worded as a noun.
• Examples:“Students will practice (name of skill).”
“Students will improve (name of ability).”
“Students will learn (name of skill or ability).”
OBJECTIVE
• OBJECTIVES are worded as action verbs.
• OBJECTIVES are what the students will do to get to the GOAL.
• Example:“Students will (read, write, listen, think,
discuss, practice, make, design, create, etc)________________.”
Note: For your TLC Core lesson plan, write each objective (verb) in it’s own sentence. Be sure each objective includes detail.
RATIONALE
• RATIONALE is justification for the lesson.• RATIONALE for your TLC Core lesson must list
MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES the students will use.• Example: Explain WHICH intelligences your lesson will
utilize and HOW each intelligence is included.– Verbal– Logical/ Mathematical– Interpersonal– Intrapersonal– Visual– Kinesthetic– Musical;– Naturalist
LESSON CONTENT
• Summarize what you are teaching (content of lesson) in narrative form.
• Example:– Summary paragraph about what you’re
teaching written in complete sentences with conventional spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
FOCUSING EVENT
• FOCUSING EVENT happens before the start of the lesson to get the students’ attention. The
• FOCUSING EVENT must be planned in advance and appropriate for the level of students you are teaching.
• FOCUSING EVENT can include movement, music, verbal or non-verbal cue. Anything besides, “Hey! Shut-up and listen to me, I’m going to teach now!”
TEACHING PROCEDURES
• TEACHING PROCEDURES include all ways you’re going to get students learning.
• Examples of a few popular teaching procedures (there are literally HUNDREDS to choose from): – Lecture– Discussion– Simulation– Role play or skit– Whole group practice– Guided practice– Individual practice– Small group work– Individual work– Question/answer, etc.
FORMATIVE CHECK
• FORMATIVE CHECK explains how will check on students’ progress during the lesson.
• Examples: – Observation– Question/answer– Call on students randomly– Call on students systematically
PARTICIPATION
• How will you get students to PARTICIPATE in the lesson?
• Examples:– Explain why they are learning this and
purpose of lesson,– Show example of finished product,– Articulate the standards/Benchmarks– Have accountability (grading criteria)– Explain consequences for non-participation.
CLOSURE
• CLOSURE is how you will end the lesson.
• CLOSURE must be planned!
• Examples:– Students share work with class, or– Discuss what they learned,– Write in their journals,– Participate in self-assessment,– Present their learning to the class, etc.
EVALUATION
• EVALUATION is how you will know whether the students “got it” or not.
• EVALUATION measures student learning in relation to the GOAL of the lesson.
• Examples:– Grade/score– Checklist– Rubric– Observation– Self-Assessment, etc.
MATERIALS
• MATERIALS includes EVERYTHING you will need in order to teach the lesson.
• MATERIALS include what you AND students need complete the lesson.
• DO NOT assume the teacher has all of these things. Gather what you need BEFORE you start the lesson.
• Examples:– Copies/handouts (include #)– Pencils/crayons/pens– Space on floor– Whiteboard space, whiteboard markers, eraser– Overhead projector, overhead, pens– LCD projector, computer, time to log-on– Scissors, glue, erasers (include #), etc., etc., etc.
