The Age of the Princes Understand the political landscape in Wales in 1063. P.E. and History When the Welsh king Gruffudd ap Llywelyn died in 1063 he was not replaced by a new king. Princes from different regions in Wales fought against each other to gain power and land. Organise the learners in to 4 different teams: Deheubarth Gwynedd Glamorgan Powys You could create a coat of arms/badge for your team, and pretend that they are preparing for a battle against the other regions. Give everyone in the class a name from the middle ages: their first name + “ap” + their father/guardian’s first name. A playing area such as a gymnasium or a tennis court is needed for this game. See the page below on how to set up the court. Divide the court into 4 sections Place a hula-hoop in the middle of each section. Place a tennis ball on top of a tall cone in the hula-hoop. Give each team 3 balls as weapons. The aim of the game is to try and knock the tennis balls of the other teams off the cone while protecting their own tennis ball at the same time. Some members of the team will have to attack and others will have to defend. They will have to pretend that the tennis ball is their leader. Players must stay inside their section. The defending team cannot step inside the hula-hoop. If your tennis ball is knocked off the cone by another team then your team are out of the game. The winning team is the last team to keep their tennis ball on their cone. Remind the learners that Welsh princes were constantly fighting against each other during this period.
