Topic: Respect others and appreciate what we have Date: Subject: Grade 1 Social Studies General Outcome: Students will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of how identity and self-esteem are enhanced by their sense of belonging in their world and how active members in a community contribute to the well-being, growth and vitality of their groups and communities. Specific Outcome: 1.1.1 Values and attitudes. 1.1Value self and others as unique individuals in relation to their world. 1 Demonstrate respect for their individual rights and the rights of others (C, I). ICT Outcome: F.3 Students will demonstrate a moral and ethical approach to the use of technology. 1.5 Use appropriate communication etiquette. Materials Required: Story about respect, bucket of toys, set of photos prepared on smartboard Time Teaching Points Notes 0900-0910 0910-0912 0912-0922 0922-0928 During play period 0300-0310 Anticipatory Set: Introduce what respect is by reading a story about respect. Afterwards, have children sit in a circle and each say one thing one way of showing respect. Objective: To teach the students what respect and appreciation are and how to show it. Input: How do we show respect to others, what does being respectful mean? How do we appreciate what we have, how do we show appreciation? Modelling: I will demonstrate how picking up toys after I am finished playing with them is respectful to the teacher so that I don’t have to do it at the end of them. Then I will demonstrate how much I appreciate not having to pick up toys at the end of the day. Also demonstrate to them other examples such as holding the door open, paying a compliment, etc. Use the children to help demonstrate examples. Guided Practice: I will encourage the children to say thank-you after someone does something nice for them (HEAR), I will (SEE) the children using manners with each other, I will help the children make appropriate respectful decisions when playing in the classroom (DO) Check for Understanding: Following this role Describe what respect means, and give your own example before the students do. Independent Practice: I will observe the children’s behaviour over time and see if they are continually demonstrating respect and appreciation. Also assign the homework sheet of examples of respect and appreciation. Closure: Thank the students as an example of appreciate for their listening, and have them thank you in return. Say good bye to each student as they leave the class.
