    General Objective(s): By the end of the unit, students should:

    1. appreciate the function of the English Language;

    2. develop an interest in the different types of writing;

    3. develop an appreciation for the use of Persuasive Writing.

    Specific Objectives: By the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

    1. explain the term repetition based on the introductory activity;

    2. identify and underline the repetition in the advertisement and

    comment on its effectiveness;

    3. respond to the advertisement by expressing their feelings toward it

    and if they are persuaded to buy Tiger Chocolates;

    4. work in groups of three and use the picture assigned to them to write

    a brief advertisement which must include repetition.

    Content: Through exploration the following content will evolve: Persuasive techniques are

    devices that are used in persuasive writing, for examples repetition, rhetorical questions or

    emotive language. Repetition is a major strategy for producing emphasis, clarity oremotional

    effect. Writers may repeat a word, a phrase or an entire sentence foremphasis.

    Previous Knowledge: The students are aware of persuasive writing and the different purposes

    of persuasive writing. In addition, some of these students have at least once in their lives won an

    argument using some of the devices/techniques of Persuasion knowingly or unknowingly.

    Students are exposed to different mediums of persuasion, for example debates whether at their

    schools or on the televisions. They are aware of advertisements on the radios, televisions,

    billboards and even on the buses they travel on to school or elsewhere.

    The students practice persuasion when they want an increase in allowance, to be excused

    from doing the household chores, to go to a party, acquire the latest iPod, phone or clothes from

    their parents. They go on the internet and are persuaded to join the various social sites such as

    Face book or Hi5. Based on the aforementioned they practice persuasion and encounter its

    effects on a daily

    Methodologies: guided discovery, questioning, group work and discussion.

    Instructional Materials: Through the following tools the learning process will be enhanced:

    handouts depicting a formal definition of the term repetition, copies of Say No to Drugs,

    pictures of objects- iPod , phones , houses, car, a van , a Jansport bag, a watch and a livingroom

    set and copies of an advertisement entitled, Tiger Chocolates.

    Introductory Activity: The teacher will say to the class: Your classmate as something he wants

    to read to you, so listen carefully. The student will then come to the front of the class and read

    the following persuasive piece:

    SAY NO TO DRUGS AND YES TO LIFE

    Cause its harmful for you!

    SAY NO TO DRUGS AND YES TO LIFE

    Since it can kill you!

    SAY NO TO DRUGS AND YES TO LIFE

    It can make you mad and lose your love ones.

    SAY NO TO DRUGS AND YES TO LIFE

    It will damage your brain and you can spend the rest of your life in jail.

    SO SAY NO TO DRUGS AND YES TO LIFE!!!!!!!!!

    After the student has read the persuasive piece the teacher will ask the students the followingquestions?

    1. After listening to what your classmate has read can you identify the message being

    conveyed orsaid to you? Expected response: Yes.

    2. What is the message being said orconveyed to you? Expected response: Saying no to

    drugs because it is harmful.

    3. What feelings does this piece evoke in you? Various responses.

    4. What aspect orpart of this piece stands out the most in your mind? Expected

    response:Say no to drugs and yes to life.

    5. Why does this aspect or part stand out the most in your mind? Expected response: It is

    repeated several times?

    6. Can you identify another word forrepeated? Expected response: Repitition.

    The teacher will then tell the class that todays class is a continuation of Persuasive Writing

    but as it relates to a technique of Persuasive Writing Repetition.

    Step1: The teacher will chose two students to remind the class of what is persuasive writing.

    The class will say whether the students are correct or incorrect.

    (Please note:Step 1 is important in order to link the previous knowledge with what is to be

    learnt.)

    Step 2: The teacher will chose two students to give their definition of the persuasive technique

    repetition. Their responses will be written on the blackboard. The teacher will issue handouts

    depicting a formal definition of the term repetition. The teacher will first read aloud what is on

    the handout and then the entire class will read aloud what is on the handout. The students

    responses will be compared to the formal definition. As a result, the students will see that there

    are more than one definition for the term.

    Step 3: The teacher will instruct the students to write in their notebooks one reason why they

    believe writers use repetition as a technique to persuade someone. Afterwards, the teacher will

    take several students responses and the class will explore the responses to arrive at various

    reasons such as emphasis, to appeal to a persons emotions or to convince.

    Step4: The teacher will issue copies of an advertisement called, Tiger Chocolates. The

    teacher will ask the students to identify and underline the repetition in the advertisement and

    comment on the effectiveness of the repetition. Afterwards, the class will explore their feelings

    toward the advertisement and whether they are persuaded to buy Tiger Chocolates.

    Evaluation 1: The teacher will instruct the students to work in groups of three and use the

    picture assigned to them to write a brief advertisement which must include repetition. At least

    one group must present before the end of the class.
