Dividing by 10

When you divide a decimal by 10, the decimal point moves one place to the left. Only one 0.

(Think: number becomes smaller)

Ex. 5.6/ 10 = 0.56

Dividing by 100

When you divide a decimal by 100, the decimal point moves two places to the left. There are two 0 in 100.

Ex. 5.6/100 = 0.056

Dividing by 1000

When you divide a decimal by 1000, the decimal point moves three places to the left. There are three 0 in 1000.

Ex. 5.6/1000 = 0.0056

Dividing by 10 000

When you divide a decimal by 10 000, the decimal point moves four places to the left. There are four 0 in 10 000.

Ex. 5.6/10 000 =0.00056
