    Fire

The result of the chemical combination of a

combustible material (fuel) with oxygen in the

    presence of enough heat.

    Basic Chemistry of Fire

    1. Fuel or Combustible material

    a material,

which contains chemical elements that will

react with oxygen, and under proper

    conditions, produces fire.

    2. Oxygen

we need 16% oxygen to sustain fire

    3. Sufficient heatto raise the temperature of the

fuel surface to a point where chemical union of

    the fuel and oxygen occurs.

    4. Chemical Chain Reaction

    vapors of gases,

which are distilled during burning process of a

material, are carried into the flame.

    Fire Extinguishing Method

    1. Isolation

    by eliminating the

    combustible material

    2. Smothering by cutting of the oxygen

supply3. Quenchingby cooling to a point below

    ignition temperature

    4. Inhibition by inhibiting the rapid

    oxidation of the fuel

Classification of Fires and Extinguishing Methods

    1. Class Afires

    are fires involving organic solids

    like paper, wood, etc.

    2. Class B fires are fires involving flammable

    liquids

    3. Class C fires

    are fires involving electrical

    equipment

    4. Class D fires are fires involving combustible

    metals such as magnesium, titanium,

    zirconium, sodium and potassium
