Special Signs

& Marks

So far in this Iridology course, we have looked at:

• what iridology is

• its history

• different theories on how it works

• the basic chart

• the making of a lesion and the level of inflammation

• healing crises

• various concentric zones of the iris

• landmarks

• iris color and genotypes

If any of these topics are a bit hazy for you, take the time now to return to

the appropriate lesson and review. In this lesson, we are going to look for some of the special marks in the iris. In addition to the normal lesion of common inflammation, we have special signs and a few simple ways to further organize the signs of such inflammation.

IRIDOLOGY Special Signs and Marks

Radii Solaris

Also called Groove Radials or Radial Furrows, these ray-like markings are spoke-like structures which appear to be "chiseled" into V-shaped lines, radiating out from the centre of the iris along a radius ... similar to the rays of the sun (thus the name "solaris"). The markings normally originate in the intestinal tract and radiate outward. Even though various authorities do not agree upon the origin of them, it is generally agreed that they represent areas of concentrated toxins, probably from the intestinal tract. They also show a weakness in, or lowered, nerve energy in the area they pass through. This reduced nerve energy is often preceded by intense nerve tension before the weakness. The depth or the groove and length of the line show the intensity of the issue.

Some authorities distinguish between radii minores (sometimes called pupillaris minores), which move from the ANW outward and radii majoris (pupillaris major), which start at the pupil and move outward. The degree of toxicity in the corresponding area is also indicated by the darkness of the mark. Many feel that the corresponding area of the intestinal tract has become weakened, possibly by parasite activity, creating an opportunity for toxic material to be absorbed either into the circulatory system or more likely the lymphatic system, targeting itself for the "reflex" organ. The most common area to spot radii solaris is in the brain area, originating in the transverse colon area. From my experience, I have noticed that there also seems to be a more frequent occurrence of radii solaris in brown irises than blue ones.

In my opinion, and the opinion of many others, radii solaris do not necessarily indicate parasites in the corresponding area. Being areas suspected for high concentrations of toxins, they could be susceptible to parasites but markings in themselves are not definite evidence of parasites. There is an additional consideration. Clients have a tough time coping with the idea that they have intestinal parasites. Telling a person they have

parasites in other areas (when you're not certain) may trigger psychological reactions that you may not be ready to deal with. No one wants to hear they have a parasite in their brain. Radii solaris do indicate that the person needs some kind of cleansing program ... whether herbs, fasting or a combination.

Though not thoroughly substantiated nor generally accepted, some iridologists feel that radii solaris represent an influence outside normal physiology, extending into psychological or even metaphysical realms. The radii are held to represent psychological blockages – not accepting certain aspects of one's self, feelings of inadequacy, not following one's destined path or even the results of "bad karma". Such theories are tough to prove. Even if true, they open up areas of client interaction that a novice iridologist may be ill-equipped to handle. Even senior iridologists might find the idea of telling someone they chose an incorrect "path" as a youth a bit daunting. Nonetheless, knowing something of these alternative theories is worthwhile.

Line Radials

These lines might at first be mistaken for Radii solaris, but you will easily see the difference. Instead of deep chiseled ‘V’ grooves, these are raised white iris fibers seen in either acute inflammation or sometimes the cleansing process. They can sometimes be darker in a sub-acute or chronic stage (remember Hering’s Law of Cure, Lesson 2). Sometimes these radial lines are bright red, like blood, and that is exactly what they are, indicating blood issues in the area. The red or sometime pinkish lines are often associated with fevers in the area or some form of significant congestion.

These lines are usually singular and straight but can be more than one fiber or even form into bundles. As with other locations in the iris, these signs all represent weakness in the area, with the degree determined by the intensity of the line.

Sometimes the fibers group together so much that they create ‘chords’ (see next page). Chords appear almost like ropes. They are usually lighter than

the surrounding tissue, indicating there is agitation and acute irritation in the corresponding area.

Rarefaction

This is when the iris fibers seem ‘open up’ to a lower density. Remember density = resistance. The rarefaction can happen in small areas or in large sections. Think of the area as having a lower tolerance to various stresses including disease. Remember this does not mean there is a problem in this area, it just means the person is more susceptible in the corresponding area.

Transversals

Transversals indicate one of five problems in the associated area:

1. Arthritic tendencies

2. Inflammation

3. Scarring

4. Exudative conditions

5. Possible varicose veins

We can recognize transversals as lightened lines positioned transversely across part of the iris or askew to the normal radial direction. They often run in horizontal or oblique directions. Sometimes these transversals are pink or red in colour, which normally indicate a more severe activity in that area, often of a vascular nature. Sometimes it indicates blockage in the corresponding blood vessels. Confusion can often be caused by the presence of a "stray" blood vessel that signifies little, if anything, about the corresponding area. Look closely to determine whether the feature is a transversal or a blood vessel. A special type of transversal known as an aberrable, meaning "stray" fiber, represents tissue that is either enlarged or in various stages of atrophy.

Subcategories of transversals

Fork Transversal – showing a tendency to venous congestion, adhesion or some other weakened condition

Root Transversal – represent benign tumors, congestion, obstruction, inflammation and deformation. You will most often see them in the liver, spleen or gonad areas.

Rooftop Transversals – indicate chronic inflammation, cysts and other potential tissue changes

Neuronal Netting

Neuronal Netting represents a potential nervous condition such as anxiety, depression or bi-polar issues. They appear like transversals, but are more intricate and are ‘woven’ into a net like appearance. This can also show a peripheral neuropathy, but is more often seen as a normal transversal.

Lacuna

You might often come across the term lacuna when reading some of the iridology texts. Lacuna is the word the Europeans use for lesions and many feel it is a better term to use. We have included the term here because these structures have been more thoroughly classified in the European system and thereby give additional information to the iridologist.

Lacuna (plural lacunae, but often seen as lacunas), is Latin for "pit" or "hole", relating to lacune or "lake". As stated previously, lacunae are exactly like lesions with various levels of inflammation: acute, sub-acute, chronic and degenerate. The following figures will show you what some of the various shapes of lacunae and lesions might represent. The reason the word "might" is bolded is that these shapes are really only indications and are not definite, especially in the case of more severe problems. Some of the shapes (like the asparagus lacuna) are thought by some to represent cancer, but in reality often indicate something minor, which is in a chronic level of inflammation. A good example of this is a women who had what appeared to be an asparagus lacuna in the uterus area (indicating she might have uterine cancer) and she was really only having a problem with her IUD. This can be a relatively significant problem, but is not at the level of cancer. The opposite can be true. Some people have severe problems, even cancers that do not show up in the iris. Use these signs as guidelines only and not as definite signs.

The shape and degree of a lacuna can vary a lot depending on the light source. This is one of the reasons for an iridologist to use a separate light torch, rather than a fixed light source, so they can move the light around to get a more detailed look at depth and degree of separation.

IRIDOLOGY Special Signs and Marks

There are basically two types of lacunas: open and closed. The open lacuna has an open supply of blood and nutrients and thus can be more reactive in a sub-acute and acute stage. The closed lacuna does not have an open interaction with the rest of the body. There has been much more attention given to closed lacunae, as they can represent deeper health issues.

Remember it is easy to concentrate on the marks in the iris. A person is not “a lacuna unto itself.” You have to take into consideration other signs, both in the iris and the client’s symptom constellation. The irises just help direct you to ask questions about their life – physical, emotional, mental and social.

A few more considerations before we go into the varying types of lacunae. Most of the lacunae are specific (stabile) to the specific location they reside in (topostabile). Some lacunae can indicate problems for their location, as well as specific related organs or systems. This means that the indication may be liable to change location (topolabile). The Felke Institute in Heimshiem Germany states that a single, prominent lacuna is much more significant than many poorly-defined lacunae. You be the judge for the individual cases you see.

To sum this up, we are looking at:

1. Mapped location

2. Shape

3. Changing shape varying with intensity of light

4. Breaking through the ANW. The severity of the problem increases if the lacuna breaks through the ANW

Open Lacuna This is a normal lesion that is active with a good blood supply. It can be in any of the levels of inflammation, not just the acute level as some authorities indicate. This open feature indicates a potential for some level of reactivity and possibly discharge. This of course opens to the possibility of being transformed into a healing opportunity.

IRIDOLOGY Special Signs and Marks

Half Lacuna This is an open lacuna with only one side present, just like its name suggests, with no clear border on the one side. Contrary to intuitive feeling this lacuna can (and I emphasize the word “can”) be more severe than a closed lacuna, as the underlying tissue does not have the energy reserve to throw off a stressful condition.

Medusa Jellyfish Lacuna This open lacuna usually represents a family history of health problems in the area found, most often in the respiratory or kidney areas. This literally means that they have genetically low tissue reserves in the associated area, and may be more susceptible to colds, flus or urinary tract problems.

IRIDOLOGY Special Signs and Marks

Closed Lacuna These types of lacunae (see figure on the next page) have closed themselves off from the major blood supply. The most common closed lacuna is almond-shaped. The tissue will still get some blood supply, but most often represents chronic or sub-acute problems and can, on rare occasions, reflect acute inflammations. At the very least the closed lacuna indicates an accumulation of toxins, with low functioning tissue and poor resistance. In some of the more chronic situations of a darkened lacuna, there is likely a cyst or even a tumor in the associated area.

Crypts Lacuna Crypts are diamond or rhomboid-shaped and are quite small, closed lacunas with sharp, clear borders. They will most often be seen in Zones 1 & 2, the nutritive zones inside the ANW, but can also be found on and outside the ANW. They represent inherited signs for potential degeneration and immune suppression. The more common potential signs they represent are ulcers, perforation of the bowel, or weakness in the area, with an accumulation of toxins. Even if seen outside the ANW, they will still indicate bowel problems in the proximity of the crypt. Don’t mix these up with Defect Marking (DM), which are smaller and always deeper black.

IRIDOLOGY Special Signs and Marks

Defect Marking DMs (sometime call Defect of Substance) are small, thin and black; almost like a tiny dot/point or line/slit. The blackness comes from seeing right through to the deepest background layer of the stroma. DMs are some of the most ominous of iris signs, suggesting (most often) an inherited tendency to major pathology such as cancer, tissue destruction / necrotic tissue, in the associated area. Leonard Mehlmauer states in his material that DMs are 88% inherited and 12% developed.

Remember, even though a person has a potential, that does not mean they will have the problem. Genes are not self-fulfilling. They have to be turned on or off. Both mind and emotions can play a big role here. If you tell a person they have a strong inherited potential for cancer in their body, the emotional stress of that alone can trigger turning the genes on. Your job is to assist in not turning the genes on, or potentially, turning them off. Flower Essences and counseling can help in this area. You might want to refer these patients out to other practitioners.

IRIDOLOGY Special Signs and Marks

Asparagus Lacuna This is the classic indication for severe problem like tumors or degenerated tissue. They can happen anywhere in the iris, but are most often seen in the brain or genital areas. Remember, we don't feel that it always signifies problems to that degree of severity but it does give a strong enough sign to suggest treading lightly and get backup from other practitioners. Refer the patient to a more experienced individual if you cannot determine the exact problem and its treatment with certainty. You might get the patient referred for an MRI or CT-scan. Some Europeans feels that this lacuna represents a high probability of cancer. We have seen many patients with such lacunae that do not have cancer ... but who do usually have at least a cyst or other advanced problems.

Beak Lacuna Looking somewhat like a beak of a bird (either straight or curved), it can be anywhere in the iris and suggests something more significant than a common almond-shaped lacuna. This can be a benign tumor, polyps or cyst. Sometimes this lacuna penetrates the ANW, making the potential stronger for a more compromised issue in the related tissue. When piercing the ANW, we also can find nutritive, bowel and nervous system interaction in a potential malignancy.

Pear Lacuna This lacuna is the precursor of the much-feared asparagus lacuna and is supposed to indicate a strong tendency toward cancer (Again, no running to the washroom mirror to look for problems. These are "research" indications and do not always indicate severe problems).

Lance Lacuna Also a forerunner of the asparagus lacuna, the lance lacuna indicates a predisposition towards possible degenerative problems such as cancer. With the number of cancer indications in the European system, it certainly makes one wonder where their health focus lies!

Torpedo Lacuna Large torpedo lacunae represent genetic weakness according to some European researchers. We have seen these lacunae when there was no indication of "normal" genetic weakness. Smaller versions of this shape are considered to represent tumors or possibly cysts in the indicated area.

Tulip Lacuna is most often found in the sinus area and means polyps in the nasal passage. This lacuna (see figure next page) can be opened or closed but always has three closed lacunae gathering into a tulip-like formation.

Leaf Lacuna usually seen in zone 3 near or alongside the ANW. They are most often associated with potential endocrine insufficiencies related to

hormone imbalances. They can also be in the gallbladder area. They respond well to herbal, flower essence and homeopathic treatment.

Polyp Lacuna This somewhat pear- or peanut-shaped lacuna is attached to the ANW and suggest polyps in the bowel. The condition has a stronger potential for severity if the ANW is pierced. Relate this to symptoms and other nearby markers.

Shoe Lacuna This very distinctive lacuna appears like a shoe print showing the heel and the ball of the shoe. It shows as an imbalance in the kidneys, often leading to heart issues. This sign is most often seen in the kidney, but can also be seen in the heart. It should be noted that it can be seen in other areas of the iris and still mean a kidney/heart potential.

IRIDOLOGY Special Signs and Marks

Step Lacuna This shape indicates that there is a weakness in the associated tissue from low tissue reserve to serious potential insufficiencies. This mark has also been associated with pancreas issues no matter where it is found in the iris.

Shingle Lacuna Shingle lacuna are basically the same as step lacunae but

are "tipped over" and also represent pancreas weakness.

Honeycomb Lacuna Not a true lacuna, the honeycomb look shows low tissue reserve in the associated area. They can be found anywhere in the iris, but most often in the lungs or ovary area. When found just inside the ANW they represent worm nest. Some Europeans feel this represents an endocrine imbalance. In our experience, we have found it often represents a general mineral deficiency associated with poor circulation in the area.

Rhomboid Lacuna In general, this lacuna represents some organic weakness in the corresponding organ. It is also the classic shape of the heart lesion known as the heart diamond.
