chose Silas to go with him to Asia Minor. Now, instead of just one missionary team, there were two.

The Bible tells us very little aboutBarnabas and John Mark after this, but wedo know that John Mark became a faithfulpreacher. The bad feelings between Paul,Barnabas, and John Mark did not last. Paulspoke well of John Mark in later years.

Paul and Silas began their journey.Through Syria, across the mountains nearTarsus, and on to Derbe and Lystra the twomen walked. They stopped here and thereto encourage the believers to always loveand trust God.

At Lystra, they met Timothy, a young

Christian who loved Jesus with all hisheart. His mother was a Jew, but his fatherwas a Gentile. As a child, Timothy hadlearned about God from his mother Eunice(yüånis) and his grandmother Lois. Theytaught him to love God and His Word.

The believers of Lystra and Iconiumspoke so well of Timothy that Paul askedhim to come along on their journey.

Timothy agreed to leave his home andbe Paul’s helper. He worked with Paul formany years, and the two became like fatherand son.

Paul, Silas, and Timothy made their wayacross Asia Minor. They visited the

churches to encourage the believers. At each place, they read theletter from the church atJerusalem. Its messagecaused much joyamong the believers. They readily agreedto do what theJewish Christianshad asked, and thenumber of Gentilebelievers grewevery day.

Paul, Silas, and Timothy traveledthrough Iconium and Antioch in Pisidia. Then they walked toward the Aegean (i j7åßn) Sea. At some places where theywished to stop and preach, God’s Spirittold them to keep traveling. And so themissionaries moved on. That night Paul had a dream. He saw aman standing on the land across the sea.“Come over to Macedonia (mas¬ß d9ån7 ß)

While at Philippi, Paul and Silas andtheir friends went daily to the river to pray. One day a young girl with an evil spirit fol-lowed them. “These men are the servants ofthe Most High God,” she shouted. “Theyhave come to show us how to be saved!”

This girl’s evil spirit told her some ofthe things that would happen in the future.Of course, people are curious aboutthe future, so many of thempaid the girl to tell whatwould happen in theirlives. But she did notget to keep any ofthe money, for shewas a slave. Themoney she earnedwent to her masters. And she had earned alot of money for them.

Satan and hisevil spirits know alot of things. They

know who loves and serves God. They alsoknow that God’s power is greater thantheirs. This evil spirit recognized Paul andhis friends as men who loved God. It knewthat they had come to tell people how to besaved. Probably it wanted to draw attentionto the missionaries so that someone wouldstir up trouble against them.
