Check Hardware Requirements

The minimum requirements for installing Windows XP

Professional include:

An Intel Pentium/Celeron family or AMD K6/Athalon/Duron

family 233 MHz processor.

64 MB of RAM.

At least one hard disk where the systemroot (usually C:\

WINNT) can be located on a partition.

At least 1.5 GB of hard disk space.

The recommended requirements for installing Windows XP

Professional include:

A PC with a 300 MHz (single or dual) processor.

128 MB of RAM.

The Windows XP Professional installation CD, running on an

Automatic compatibility check:

The ‘Check My System Automatically’ option verifies the

system and provides users with a list of incompatible items.

It also provides alternative remedies for correcting

incompatibility problems.

The Microsoft Web site provides users with a Hardware

Compatibility List (HCL) for the system.

It is essential to check all the hardware in the system prior to

installing Windows XP Professional.

Microsoft recommends a CD-ROM or DVD drive for

installations.

A super VGA display adapter that supports an 800x600

resolution, and the most recent version of the workstation

operating system software is also required.

Microsoft also recommends a mouse or any other pointing

device.

A high-density 3-½ inch floppy drive is required if floppy

disks are used for installation.


Test Workstation Hardware

The DOS FDISK command is used to rebuild the hard disk

drive prior to the installation.

The hard disk can be re-built while installing Windows XP

from the CD.

Installing Windows XP Professional

Windows XP can be installed over a network using either a

shared network drive or a set of bootable floppy disks.

A set of six boot setup disks can be created to perform the

Windows XP installation startup.

The minimum requirements for installing Red Hat Linux

workstation include:

A Pentium 200 MHz processor.

32 MB of RAM for text-mode installation.

64 MB of RAM for graphical-mode installation.

650 MB of hard disk space or 4.5 GB of available hard disk

space for a complete installation.

Additional space for any files to be stored on the server.


Red Hat recommends the use of a bootable CD-ROM drive

for all installations of the software.

not bootable.

Information about the monitor, display adapter, and the

most recent version of the network operating system that

the user plans to install is also required.

A mouse is required for graphical installations.


Test Workstation Hardware

In order to test the workstation’s hardware, it is essential to

rebuild the existing hard disk drive and start a fresh

installation.

The Linux bootable CD wipes the existing hard drive and

builds new partitions during the installation.

A CD-ROM based installation:

Erases everything on the workstation’s disk drives and

reformats them.

Configures the server to use the IP.

Creates a new Red Hat Linux workstation.


The following items are required to perform the installation:

Computer with a hard disk drive that can be totally erased.

Red Hat Linux’s operating system software.

Bootable floppy disks that are created using boot.img found in

the Images directory in the Red Hat Linux operating system

CD-ROM.

Summary

Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home are the two

versions of Windows XP.

them.

Before performing any installation, care should be taken to

ensure that the hardware meets the program requirements,

operates properly, and includes all the necessary drivers.
