Lesson 5-1Construction Technology
Foundations of Technology
To familiarize students with construction technology and how cultural norms, environmental conditions, and the requirements of enterprises and institutions might affect the design of structures.
Objective
Construction is the systematic process of erecting structures to meet human needs and desires.
Construction
Buildings (commercial and residential) Industrial and heavy engineering structures
Airports Canals Highways Bridges Power transmission lines Hydroelectric dams
Types of structures
Must be safe Must meet the needs of the entity that builds
them Must be durable Must hold up to environmental conditions
Requirements of Structures
A cultural norm is how different cultures, each with their own beliefs, values, traditions, and habits, live their daily life.
Cultural norms effect local construction needs. Example: People in New York City typically live
in high rise apartments, while people in Clarksville typically live in single-family homes.
Example: Places of worship look different in the US than they do in India or Iraq.
Cultural Norms
Structures require maintenance, alteration, or renovation periodically to keep them in good working order.
Structures
The major processes and procedures to create buildings are: Preparing the site Setting foundations Building the framework Enclosing the structure Installing utilities Finishing the exterior Completing the site
Procedures
You will research and develop a multimedia presentation on construction- the systematic process of building structures to meet human needs and desires.
