The Simple Present Tense

4A-1. The Simple Present Tense

Definition: The present tense is the tense of the verb that suggests that the action , state or situation occurs at the moment of speaking or writing.

The Simple Present Tense Format 1: base form of the verb for

plural subjects: writers, They, We, I and you

o The children sing the National Anthem loudly.

o I dedicate this song to my mother.

o You write a paper on the fiction writers of the 19th century.

The Simple Present Tense Format 2: verb+s for singular subjects in the

third person. Chloe, brother, cat, he, she, it

o Chloe dances gracefully. She is a principal dancer of Ballet Manila.

o The chair needs repainting. It looks so dilapidated already.

o Ramon trains young students in taekwondo. He meets his students twice a week.

The Simple Present Tense Conditions that use the present tense:

1. Indicates that the action is taking place in the present.

o Every time the baby piles his blocks high enough, the cat swipes it down.

2. Indicates that the action is habitual.

o The family prays the rosary every night.

3. Expresses events that are certain to happen in the future.

o Grandmother turns 80 next week.

The Simple Present Tense 4. Expresses facts, generalizations, or universal

truth.

o Men wear pants, not skirts. (fact)

o Politicians are corrupt. (generalization)

o The light of the moon is a reflected light. (universal truth)

5. Indicates events that are scheduled, conveying a sense of future time.

o Cebu Pacific leaves Manila for Cebu at 10:40 tonight

The Simple Present Tense 6. Expresses permanent actions that last a

relatively long time. o That 30-storey building houses several

blue chip companies. o Marina teaches English to South Korean

expatriates.

7. Expresses fictional or historical present. Examples: • News bulletins with facts listed as a summary.

o Purisima resigns post as PNP chief.

The Simple Present Tense • Narration of sports or other showcased events.

oManny Pacquiao feints, swings his left hand and sends a lethal jab on Mayweather’s jaw.

o The MC announces: “ Miss Philippines, in a lovely emerald green gown, walks to the center stage, makes a graceful curtsy and throws a kiss to the audience.

• Description of actions in a script. o Gus (murmurs sadly) “I guess I’m just not

lucky today.” oJenny (walks to the door, yanks it open)

“Daddy!!!”

The Simple Present Tense 8. Indicates imperative statements, commands,

requests, procedure and direction .

o “Wilfred, stop talking.” (command)

o “Please return this book to the librarian.” (request)

o Slit the neck of the chicken; let the blood flow out into a bowl; submerge the hen in boiling water 3-5 minutes; remove the feathers… (procedure)

o Take a jeepney bound for Baclaran. Go down in front of Manila City Hall etc …. (direction)

The Simple Present Tense 9. Suggests past actions using verbs of

communication.

o Janey tells me, “ I brought Father to the hospital for a check-up.

o Mark asks, “ Did you tell Jake you won in the lottery?

10. Suggests future action

o The fashion show starts in fifteen minutes.

o Andrew’s family immigrates to Australia next year.
