Objective: to communicate mathematical thinking orally

Warm-up: Examine the punch-out coins with your student. Th en ask him the following questions.

1. What shape are these coins? (circle)

2. Which coin is the biggest? (quarter)

3. Which coin has a diff erent color? (penny)

Skill Development: Begin the lesson by showing your student the following picture.

Ask your student which object does not belong? (hot dog) Explain to your student that you want him to tell you about the answer he gave. Demonstrate the steps he should use to tell about his answer.

Step 1: Answer the question. (Th e hot dog does not belong.)

Step 2: Explain how you found your answer. (I looked at each object to see how the objects were alike.)

Step 3: Explain why your answer is correct. (I know that my answer is correct because all of the objects are fruits except for the hot dog.)

Explain to your student that he also can tell about how groups are sorted. To introduce this idea, read p. 7 in Calvert Math with your student. Explain that the objects are not sorted by shape; some are triangles and some are diamonds. Th e objects are not sorted by size; some are bigger and some are smaller. Show your student the following two groups of objects.

Ask: How are the objects sorted? Tell about it. (Th e objects are sorted by color. I looked at each group to see how the objects are alike. I know my answer is correct because all of the shapes in one group are white and all of the objects in the other group are black.)

If your student needs more practice, use the punch-out attribute blocks to make a group of circles and a group of squares. Have your student tell you how the shapes were sorted.

Work with your student to complete the sample problem on p.  7 in Calvert Math before assigning the Practice section.

Practice: Complete Practice 1–3 on p. 8 in Calvert Math and Practice 4: Telling About It in Practice and Enrichment Workbook.

Enrichment: Complete Enrichment 3: Sorting Blocks.

Looking Forward: For the next lesson, gather household items to give your student practice classifying. Th ere should be three of each item. Th e items should be similar so that your student can see easily how the objects are alike. Examples include cans of food, boxes of cereal, shoes, socks, pens, pencils, magazines, and books.
