Describing Your Family

Nǐ jiā (dōu) yǒu shén me rén ？ Nǐ jiā yǒu jǐ gè rén ？你 家 ( 都 ) 有 什 么 人？ 你 家 有 几 个人？ Who do you have in your family? How many people are there in your family?

Wǒ jiā yǒu wǔ gè rén, wǒ bàba, wǒ māma, wǒ gēge, jiě jie, hái yǒu wǒ.我 家 有 五个人，我 爸爸，我 妈妈，我哥哥 姐姐，还 有 我。There are five people in my family, my Dad, my Mom, my older brother and older sister, and there is also me.

Nǐ shì lǎo jǐ ？ wǒ shì lǎo sān你是老几？ 我是老三。…………… .. ? I am the third.

Wǒ méi yǒu xiōng dì jiě mèi, wǒ shì dú shēng zǐ/ dú shēng nǚ 我 没有 兄弟姐妹， 我是 独生子 / 独 生 女。I don’t have siblings, I am the only child. (only son/only daughter)

有 yǒu ： to have, to possess, there is/are (P101, P163 Vocabulary Glossary)

我有 two tickets for the show. 你有 textbook 吗？ 有 and 没有 to have (yǒu) and to have not (méi yǒu) ：

all Chinese verbs can become negative with the addition of 不 bù, like 不是bù shì, 有 yǒu is an exception. 有 has an unique negative form, always use negative méi as 没有 méi yǒu , 我有一个哥哥，我没有弟弟。我有一个姐姐，我没有妹妹。I have one older brother, I don’t have younger brothers. I have an older sister, I don’t have any younger sisters.

都 dōu ： use as an adverb in listing things, meaning all/both你家里都有什么人？ Who do you have in your family?你都去过哪里？ Where have you been to?中餐、西餐，我都喜欢。 Chinese food, western food, I like both of

them.

还： also, too, as well, 还有我 and there is also me.

Wǒ jiā yǒu wǔ gè rén, wǒ bàba, wǒ māma, wǒ gēgejiějie, hái yǒu wǒ.我 家 有 五个人，我爸爸，我妈妈，我哥哥姐姐，还 有 我。There are five people in my family, my Dad, my Mom, my older brother and older sister, and there is also me.

Zhè shì wǒ (de) yéye, nà shì wǒ (de) nǎinai. 这 是 我 ( 的 ) 爷爷， 那 是 我 ( 的 ) 奶奶。This is my grandpa, that is my grandma.

Zhè shì wǒ bàba, zhè shì wǒ māma, nà shì wǒ gēge, nà shì wǒ jiějie, 这 是 我 爸爸，这是 我 妈妈，那是 我 哥哥，那 是 我 姐姐。This is my Dad, this is my Mom, that is my older brother, that is my older sister.

Nà shì wǒ de māo, tā jiào xiǎo hǔ.那 是 我 的 猫， 它 叫 小虎。 ( 的 is not omitted in this case)This is my cat, his name is Little Tiger.
