and He is over all things competent –

2: [He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed…. In actions.

Allah زوجلع created us, and He blessed us with numerous gifts. And He is watching our actions,

observing us, as to what kind of lives we live? What do we do? Do we live as obedient servants, or

as disobedient servants?

Each person is being tested in this regard. No person, is exempted from this, each person’s حل is عح

being seen. It is being observed. And Allah has given us clear guidance regarding what is good and

what is bad. What is it that we have to do, and what is it that we have to refrain from? And fortunate

is the person who observes the commands of Allah and attains the eternal success of the أ خرة.

What is this test of life? It is of “أ حسن عل,” that whose work is best. Everybody is working, isn't it?

Everybody's doing their things, everybody's got their own way. Allah is observing that whose deeds

are the best, whose actions are done, are performed with excellence, in the best way.

So what we really need to see is that, are our deeds really أ حسن? Are they really good?

How is my الحة قحة is it really good? How is my ,صح دح ب is it really good? How is my ,صح ,How is it ?صح

when I'm interacting with other people, when I'm dealing with people, whether they are parents or

siblings or children? These are all our tests, right?

So Allah is looking that which person, does best. We need to analyse ourselves that where is it that

my actions are good, and where is it that my actions are not good? We think good action is limited to

worship, rituals. Yes, they are good deeds. But they're just a portion, a section of good deeds.

Because in our lives, we do many actions, many أ عال right? Certain أ عال, yes, they are الحة قحة ,صح دح ,صح

likewise reciting the قرأ ن, these are all good deeds. But the large chunk of our deeds is what?

Dealing with people, because what we say is also an action. How we look at somebody, that is also

an action. How we walk up and down the stairs, that is also an action. These are all actions and Allah

is checking whose action is أ حسن? Whose action is أ حسن?

And remember that for an أ حسن عل, for an action to be good what is required? Yes, it has to be done

in the best way, in the most beautiful way, and what is the most beautiful way? That, which Allah

likes. When is it that Allah will like a deed? When it's done for Him. When it's done while

remembering Him, fear of Him, hoping reward from Him. And then also perform with excellence.

The method should be correct and that is that the action is, performed in a way that Allah و سبحانه

.showed, so this is the test of life ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص has prescribed. That the Messenger تعالى

….and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving –

Juzz # 29 2015 فهم القرأ ن

Page 3 ربنا تقبل منا

Meaning He has full authority over His servants. If they do not do أ حسن عل, He can punish them in

this world. But He gives them time, He is غحفر, He forgives people, despite their repeated failures.

3: [And] He is the one who has created seven heavens in layers. You do not see in the

creation of the Most Merciful any inconsistency. So return [your] vision [to the sky]; do you see

any breaks?

Do you see any breaks? No, you don't. Every action, every work of Allah, how is it? It is beautiful

and excellent. And what does He want from us? That, we also perform our actions, beautifully, and

with excellence.

4: Then return [your] vision twice again. [Your] vision will return to you humbled while it is

fatigued.

Why? Because the work of Allah it is flawless. Everything that He has made, is beautiful, everything

that He has decreed, it is good. Allah has decreed ا حسان in everything. So we also need to do ا حسان in

whatever we do. That is what will make our actions beautiful. And if you want to see the beauty, the

perfection, the purpose of what Allah has made, just look up to the sky.

Allah says:

5: And We have certainly beautified the nearest heaven with stars and have made [from]

them what is thrown at the devils and have prepared for them the punishment of the Blaze.

6: And for those who disbelieved in their Lord is the punishment of Hell, and wretched is the

destination.

7: And when they are thrown into it, they hear from it a [dreadful] inhaling while it boils up.

Hellfire is noisy.

3Abdullah bin Ammar said: “In Hell will be sounds of screaming, howling, and wailing and their

sounds will resemble that of donkeys. The beginning of which is ههيق and the ending of which is ,شح

”.Inhaling and exhaling .زفري

4The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:

“Certainly the people in Hell will weep so much that if ships were made to sail in their tears they

would sail. And they will weep tears of blood.”

3 [1974:والرتهيب صحيح الرتغيب]فما هو إال الزفري والشهيق تشبه أصواهتم أصوات احلمري أوهلا شهيق وآخرها زفري

This is real, Hellfire, Allah says it has:

…. when they are thrown into it, they hear from it a [dreadful] inhaling while it boils up.

يظه :8 ح الغح مه حييح د تح .…It almost bursts with rage .… تحكح

Hell, will rage at those who are thrown into it. Imagine Hell, angry at those who are thrown into it,

merciless, vengeful towards them.

….Every time a company is thrown into it, its keepers will ask them….

The angel guards at Hellfire, they will ask people who are being thrown into Hell.

…. "Did there not come to you a warner?"

Did you miss out? What happened? Nobody told you about Hell, nobody told you about the

Hereafter? It's impossible that a person, makes it to Hell, when Allah تعالى و سبحانه authority has made

guidance so clear. And He has given so many opportunities for a person’s sins to be forgiven, for

him to accumulate good rewards. How did you ever end up in Hell? The angels will be shocked.

…. "Did there not come to you a warner?"

What happened?’

9: They will say," Yes, a warner had come to us, but we denied and we said, 'Allah has not

sent down anything. You are not but in great error.'"

This is a very common trend. That the person who tries to advise others, he is blamed, he is spoken

ill of, he is discouraged heavily, so that he also gives up. And this is exactly what people will regret

over, when they enter Hell. Today they say you are wrong.

بهريل كح

حال فه ضح

ليح نتم ا هن أ ح ..… ا ه

Those who advise them they say, “You are wrong, where's the world going, and what are you stuck

in?” But in the Hellfire, they're going to regret.

10: And they will say…. ع سمححا ن كنيح If only we had been listening…. If only we heard" ..… لح

…. or we reasoned, we would not be among the companions of the Blaze."

So, in order to learn the قي in order to learn about what Allah wants from us? In order to be saved ,حح

from Hellfire ultimately. What is it that a person has to do, according to this ةأ ? What is it that we

have to do? قهل ع نح حسمح We must listen, and we must understand now, we must learn now. We must .ن

continue to listen, should never refuse to listen to good things.

Juzz # 29 2015 فهم القرأ ن

Page 5 ربنا تقبل منا

You see, listening is something very easy. It's very easy. To open your mouth to speak, do you need

to open your mouth? Yes, to get a good smell of something, do you have to sniff? You do, to see

something do you have to open your eyes? Yes.

But to listen do you have to open your ears? No way. You don't have to do that, they're open, you

don't close your ears, I mean, if you close them that's when they're closed. But you don't have to keep

opening and closing your ears, in order to listen and then not listen. Listening is something, we don't

have a choice about. Isn't it? So, listening is something very easy to do. But if a person doesn't even

listen, then what will happen?

11: They will admit their sin, so [it is] alienation for the companions of the Blaze.

Meaning they'll be far removed, their pleas will not be heard, what they admit then, it will be useless.

They will admit their own sins, the very obvious of which is not even bothering to listen, to what has

come from Allah, not paying heed to that.

You see, we learn, but do we forget? We do, but when we listen? Do we remember again? Yes, we

do. Now many of you might already have studied all of these Surahs in great detail. And many of

you might not have, each person's level is different, isn't it? But each time a person hears the قرأ ن, whether it is the ايتأ of the قرأ ن, or it is the meaning of the قرأ ن. Then, that is beneficial, why?

Because it reminds a person, by listening, he is reminded. But if he doesn't even bother to listen, if he

doesn't even bother to listen then what? Who is he harming, who is he depriving? Himself, isn’t it

so? He's depriving himself.

Now, for example, this review of the قرأ ن, I mean, it has certainly been beneficial, at least for me.

Because ه ـح حمد لهلي

ه ,قرأ ن I got to listen to the whole ,ال ـ

ح حمد لهلي and then also deliver it. May Allah ال

تعالى و سبحانه enable us to complete it, in the due time. And also with the قي ,but many, many ,حح

forgotten matters. I mean things that we studied once upon a time, but we forgot them ه ـح حمد لهلي

I was ,ال

reminded of them. Many mistakes that we forget in ourselves, we neglect, when we read the قرأ ن again, when we listen again, we noticed those mistakes. Many important matters which are neglected

like for example, كر I never ever realized how important it was until this review of .تسبيح of Allah ذه

the قرأ ن. That how many times Allah say, do كر كر do ,تسبيح do ,ذه .تسبيح do ,ذه

I mean these are things that we generally know, but we forget about them. So when we listen, what

happens? We remember, and when we remember, then we can do it. And if we think we have learnt

it all, then what will happen? For sure after a few days we will forget. And when we forget, then

what is our action going to be like, we're going to fall behind. This is why it is necessary that we

keep listening, we keep learning, we keep reviewing the قرأ ن, even in the car listen to the قرأ ن listen to

the recitation.

None of us has seen Allah, but انشاء هللا we can say that we fear him. How much? Our deeds show,

how much we truly fear Allah.

Abdullah bin Masood narrated: “That there was a person, who had never performed any good deeds,

except for حهيد He just believed in Allah that’s it, “Oneness of Allah.” And when his time of death .تح

approached he asked the members of his family, to burn his dead body, until it would become

charred. Then crush the ashes, and on a day when the wind is blowing fast, blow the ashes in the

ocean. So, his family did that, as they were told. But he was still in Allah’s grip, so Allah, caused the

ashes to come together, and Allah asked him, “What caused you to do this?” And the man replied.

“Out of your fear. O, Allah, out of your fear. I didn't have the confidence to face you.” So Allah,

forgave him.

Allah forgave him. Even though this man, the only thing he did was the only good deed he did was,

حهيد that's it. But so much fear, that because of that fear he's doing something wrong, you're not ,تح

supposed to do this, it's haram to burn a dead body, it's something not permissible. I mean this

happened, but Allah forgave him, because of the fear that this man had. Fear of Allah is a means of

forgiveness andبهريجر كح

ح .أ 5The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:

“No man will enter the fire, who weeps for fear of Allah until the milk goes back into the udder.”

Can the milk ever return to the udder? Never, ever. Likewise, a person who weeps out of fear of

Allah, genuine fear of Allah, and he weeps, he cries. Such a person is never ever going to go to the

fire. May Allah make us among such.

13: And conceal your speech or publicize it; indeed, He is Knowing of that within the

breasts.

14: Does He who created not know, while He is the Subtle, the Acquainted?

15: It is He who made the earth tame for you - so walk among its slopes and eat of His

provision - and to Him is the resurrection.

16: Do you feel secure that He who [holds authority] in the heaven would not cause the earth

to swallow you and suddenly it would sway?

Don't you fear Allah? Don't you fear Allah? Every one of us should fear Allah and ask Allah for

.for protection, for a wellbeing morning and evening, for safety ,عافية

The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص, he never ever failed to make this dua, in the evening and in the morning. Which

what would remain safe, which car would remain safe?

…. Then you would know how [severe] was My warning.

Meaning, My words don't affect you, what are you waiting for then?

18: And already had those before them denied, and how [terrible] was My reproach.

19: Do they not see the birds above them with wings outspread and [sometimes] folded in?

None holds them [aloft] except the Most Merciful. Indeed, He is, of all things, Seeing.

20: Or who is it that could be an army for you to aid you other than the Most Merciful? The

disbelievers are not but in delusion.

21: Or who is it that could provide for you if He withheld His provision?....

If Allah withheld His provision from you. Where could you get provision from? And if rain is

cause rain to fall? Never, and sometimes remember excessive rain also can prevent زق .ره 6The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:

Because sometimes what happens excessive rainfall causes, everything to get flooded and plants to

…. But they have persisted in insolence and aversion.

Meaning they're very arrogant, so they do not believe.

22: Then is one who walks fallen on his face better guided or one who walks straight, upright

on a straight path?

Who can see better, who will find the right way?

23: Say, "It is He who has produced you and made for you hearing and vision and hearts;

That you do not use these abilities properly. You do not, and instead, you walk on through life like

animals, without even thinking, without using your eyes your ears. This is something that does not

befit man.

24: Say, "It is He who has multiplied you throughout the earth, and to Him you will be

The One who created, the One who scattered you He will call you back also.

25: And they say, "When is this promise, if you should be truthful?"

26: Say, "The knowledge is only with Allah, and I am only a clear warner."

27: But when they see it approaching, the faces of those who disbelieve will be distressed,

and it will be said, "This is that for which you used to call."

You used to demand punishment, you used to wonder where it is, you doubted us. Here, it's right

before you.

28: Say, "Have you considered: whether Allah should cause my death and those with me or

Who could bring it to you? Nobody could, so never, ever take anything for granted. We think this

was a problem, a fear that the people of the past had. Now we have huge reservoirs and lakes and

dams, and we have easily accessible water, running water in taps, more water than we can use. While

there are places in this world not far from where we are, where the lakes are drying up. Where there

is famine, where water has become very, very expensive. Farms are drying up; this is a warning.

Never, ever take anything for granted. Just think, you turn the tap on, no water comes out, what

would you do? Do you feel that desperation when there is a blackout, when there is no power or

something, for just a few hours, do you feel helpless? Imagine if there is no water. So be grateful, be

grateful for the blessings that Allah has given.

The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص had refused to eat garlic, raw garlic. He refused to eat food that was extremely

The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص, Allah is saying, “Your خالحق ”.عظيم is أ ح

And the fact is, that those whose خالحق is good. They accumulate the riches of this world and of the أ ح

people who are selfish, who get offended by little things, and who get ventral over minor petty

17: Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden….

You see this person is being so arrogant. Proud of his nose and Allah insults him, in the قرأ ن. His

nose is called خرطم, snout. Because, those who become arrogant, they become like nothing in the

sight of Allah.

Arrogant will be raised on the Day of Judgment like ants.

And the reason for bad خالحق is what? Pride, pride! We think too highly of ourselves. This is why we أ ح

get angry too quickly. This is why we get impatient.

Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden….

Here story is mentioned, from which we need to learn.

…. when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning

18: Without making exception.

Meaning they said they are sure we’re going to go and cut the fruit and that's it. We're going to do

this. They didn’t make any exception. They didn’t think there was any possibility that they wouldn’t

be able to do it.

19: So there came upon the garden an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep.

20: And it became as though reaped.

The whole garden was destroyed. You know, this is something that we can experience in our lives

also. That when we withhold goodness, when we withhold goodness, whether it is in the form of

knowledge or it is in the form of money or food, anything, when we keep it to ourselves when we

become selfish, then what happens? Even we are not able to enjoy it. We are also deprived of it.

When we withhold goodness… Goodness…. We will be deprived of goodness. When we withhold

goodness, we will be deprived of goodness either partially or completely.

يح :21 حه وا مصبه ادح نح تح ,And they called one another at morning .…فح

22: [Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit."

23: So they set out, while lowering their voices,

So that nobody should listen to them.

24: [Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person."

Because if they find out they're going to come asking and then we will have to give them. So go

quickly. So that nobody comes and you don't have to give anything to anybody.

25: And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able.

Because, a person thinks that things are in his control. That his wealth belongs to him but he doesn't

have control.

26: But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost;

When they saw the garden, they wondered, “Are we at the right place?”

27: Rather, we have been deprived."

No, it is the right place. Our garden, our crop has been ruined.

28: "The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]?'

Look at the importance of تسبيح.

29: They said… يح الهمها ظح نيح كنيح ا ا ه هنح بي حانح رح بس …. "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were

31: They said, "O woe to us; indeed we were transgressors.

It was our fault; we shouldn’t have done that.

32: Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our

Lord desirous."

Meaning, we expect good from Allah. In this is a huge lesson for all of us. That the blessings which

Allah has given us, we must share them with others.

Asma ريض هللا عهنا was told, “Do not hold back or else you will be held back from…. Good things will

be held back from you.”

Allah says:

33: Such is the punishment. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only

knew.

Because, if you lose a garden here you can always get another one. Repent, Allah will fix your

condition انشاء هللا. But the loss of the Hereafter, it's irreversible, the damage is permanent. So we don't

want to meet our Lord in a state that we are ungrateful. Always be grateful.

34: Indeed, for the righteous with their Lord are the Gardens of Pleasure.

35: Then will We treat the Muslims like the criminals?

Those who surrender to Allah and those who rebel, should they be the same?

36: What is [the matter] with you? How do you judge?

37: Or do you have a scripture in which you learn

uncovered and they are invited to prostration but the disbelievers will not be able.

Who? Those who do not prostrate to Allah in this life, will not be able to prostrate to Allah on the

Day of Judgment. You see being able to do سد. Being able to do that, physically and then, having

that chance, that opportunity, that تفيق to be able to do سدة, that willingness, this is a huge blessing

of Allah. This is a huge favor of Allah upon a servant. That a person is able to prostrate. So we

should be grateful for this.

That “O Allah, you have kept my body safe and sound, you have kept my limbs capable, that I can

actually get down on the ground. And I can put my hand, my forehead on the ground in humility to

you.”

This is something that we should be grateful for. And a person who is not grateful to Allah for this.

And he does not do سد, then what will happen on the Day of Judgment?

8We learn the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said that:

“On the Day of Judgment people will be called. People will be told that each person should follow

what it used to worship. So, each group of people will follow its Idol, its false god and it will be led

into the fire. And the ummah of the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص shall remain….

Meaning now only the people who believe in Allah who worship Allah alone, they shall remain.

…. So their Lord will come to them and He will say, “What is the matter with you, why have you not

left as the rest of the people have?” They will say, “We are waiting for our Lord….

We are waiting for our Lord.

He will say, “Can you recognize him if you were to see him?” They will say, “We know of sign

which, when we will see, we will recognize Him.” He will say, “What is it?” They will say, “He will

uncover His shin.” So at this Allah will uncover His shin. And they will all fall to the ground in

prostration. Except, for some people whose backs will become like horns of cows. They will attempt

to prostrate, but will not be able to and previously they were invited to prostrate to Allah while they

were safe and sound in body but they refused.

Those who refuse سد now, will not be able to do سد then. Just imagine, the embarrassment and the

worry and the fear.

9The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said that:

“When everyone will prostrate, every hypocrite, he will not be able to prostrate.”

Also those who show off when they pray, they will not be able to prostrate.

In another version of the similar of this hadith we learn, the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:

“Our Lord will reveal His shin on the Day. And then all the believers, men and women will prostrate

themselves before Him. But there will remain those who used to prostrate in the world for showing

off and for gaining good reputation. Such people will try to prostrate but their backs will be as stiff

as one bone…. As stiff as one bone.

50: And his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.

So if a person has been disobedient. Then what should they do. They should do what prophet

Yunus عليه السالم did. They should also repent and do تسبيح.

51: And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they

hear the message, and they say, "Indeed, he is mad."

He's crazy.

52: But it is not except a reminder to the worlds.

And this shows to us that if the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص was not in Allah’s protection, the eyes of the enemy

would certainly have harmed him. Their evil eye... But Allah sent him for a purpose and guarded him

also against every evil. And, we see the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص was a person who had the most enemies. Most

number of haters. But Allah تعالى و سبحانه protected him against every one of those. Either the enemies

turned into supporters or they surrendered or Allah withheld them. This is Allah’s promise.

The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said, he asked:

Allah says:

punishment of that Day by his children

12: And his wife and his brother

Meaning he would want to throw all people in Hell, just to save himself. If he could throw all people

even if it was little. And whenever the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص offered a prayer he used to offer it regularly. So

if حمده ال ـ

ح لهلي now because of Ramadan we are able to perform اللييل قيام then why not throughout the

year? If not every day at least every other day. I mean if we can do it in the nights that are so short,

we can do it in nights are much longer. Because Allah likes دوام, continuity.

24: And those within whose wealth is a known right

25: For the petitioner and the deprived –

Meaning they don’t keep the money just for themselves, they know that the money that they have,

some of it, it must be given to who? To those who are needy – Those who ask and those who don’t

ask, but they are needy.

11

and a man came on his camel ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said that once we were travelling with the Prophet اوب يد الدري

and he began to go right and left as if he was looking for something…. You know when a person is

needy, they’re looking, right? Otherwise, if they were not needy, if they had everything, they will be

just sitting fine, right? But this man, he kept going around and

the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:

“He who has a spare riding animal, should give it to him, who has no riding animal, and he who

has surplus equipment should give it to him, who has no equipment...” And he kept on mentioning

one thing after the other till Abu Sa’eed said, “We thought that none of us had a right in surplus

property.”

Meaning if we had anything extra with us, we thought we weren’t allowed to keep it. If there was

anything we had that was extra, we had to give it away, this is what we understood. This is what they

thought.

And what happens with us? We have clothes that are just hanging, hanging, hanging for the past

three years we haven’t worn them, probably will never wear them because now they are old-

fashioned anyway. And we’ve worn them so many times or we’ve worn them once or twice and

people have seen them and its embarrassing to wear those clothes again, and they’re just hanging!

They’re hanging! Give to those who need.

'Indeed, we have heard an amazing Qur'an.

2: It guides to the right course, and we have believed in it. And we will never associate with

our Lord anybody.

How intelligent were these Jinns! One sitting and one listening transformed them completely. What

are we waiting for? And we see over here that these Jinns, they understood the message and they

didn’t just keep it to themselves, they took it on. They passed it on. They said:

3: And [it teaches] …

Meaning the Book, the قرأ ن we have heard it teaches…

….. that exalted is the nobleness of our Lord; He has not taken a wife or a son

4: And that our foolish one has been saying about Allah an excessive transgression.

Who is this? Iblees, because he is their foolish one, he is their leader, right?

5: And we had thought that mankind and the jinn would never speak about Allah a lie.

Meaning we were in deception, in absolute deception, but Allah opened our eyes, He gave us light,

he showed us the قرأ ن.

6: And there were men from mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, so they [only]

increased them in burden.

Because the people when they are afraid of Jinn and they try to take protection of the Jinn, what

happens? The Jinns become more arrogant and rebellious. So you have to be confident. You have to

be confident, remember that Allah has chosen you, Allah told the angels to prostrate to Adam and

Iblees was also order to prostrate to Adam. The status of the human being is higher, it is greater, so

don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid.

7: And they had thought, as you thought, that Allah would never send anyone [as a

This is all about the Jinn because the Jinn are talking.

8: And we have sought [to reach] the heaven but found it filled with powerful guards and

burning flames.

9: And we used to sit [before] there in positions for hearing….

Meaning before we used to go up to the sky and listen to the angels and then whatever information

we used to get, we could go and tell the soothsayers….

…… but whoever listens now will find a burning flame lying in wait for him.

So this is something strange going on.

10: And we do not know [therefore] whether evil is intended for those on earth or whether

their Lord intends for them a right course.

And now we have understood that this قرأ ن is being revealed on Rasool Allah ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص and this is why

the heavens are so protected.

11: And among us are the righteous…

And the Jinn continue, they inform the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص.

…. among us are the righteous and among us are [others] not so; we were [of] divided ways.

12: And we have become certain that we will never cause failure to Allah upon earth, nor can

we escape Him by flight.

Look the Jinn are acknowledging this. The Jinn that go up to the skies, read the stars, what do they

say?

…. [We are] certain that we will never cause failure to Allah upon earth, nor can we escape

Him by flight.

How quickly the Jinn move? Remember: هنيهنح اجل ـ ت مي فره before you علي السالم he said to Sulaiman - هعه

When we heard the guidance, we believed in it….

Without any reservations. We heard it we believed in it!

…. And whoever believes in his Lord will not fear deprivation or burden.

The one who believes in Allah he will never fear any deprivation or burden. You see in Surat Nuh

we saw Nuh عليه السالم advised his people for 950 years in different ways, in different styles, at

different times but they refused to believe. These Jinns, only one recitation of the قرأ ن and look at

them, transformed, changed completely. Why? Because they wanted guidance, they accepted

guidance and when a person believes, what happens? Allah guides him. And the one who does not

believe then, what happens? One thing after the other and he doesn’t change.

14: And among us are Muslims [in submission to Allah], and among us are the unjust. And

whoever has become Muslim…. Meaning whoever surrenders to Allah…. - those have sought out

the right course.

They are rightly guided.

15: But as for the unjust, they will be, for Hell, firewood.'

16: And [Allah revealed] …. قا اء غحدح اه ميح ينح قح ةه لح ح قح ره

Highlight this.

.... [Allah revealed] that if they had remained straight on the way….

Meaning if people would become straight on the way, they would have ة امح تحقح .…ا

When a person would walk on this path, he has ة امح تحقح he doesn’t give up, he is firm then he ,ا

receives more and more from Allah. And this ‘ اء قا ميح غحدح ’ yes, this is water meaning rain but what is

that water that truly satisfies your thirst? Hmm? What is that water that you want? The water of

guidance. It really satisfies you. You know when you are thirsty, what happens? You get up in the

middle of the night even, it doesn’t let you sleep. When you are thirsty, you get a headache.

Likewise, when a person is thirsty for guidance, he’s needy, he keeps seeking and when he is

seeking, Allah gives him more and more and more, so he keeps increasing in guidance.

The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص when he stood up to pray, what happened? The Jinn, they came as they were a

compacted mass, so eager to listen to him. He was reciting قرأ ن in الحة .صح

20: Say, [O Prophet], "I only invoke my Lord and do not associate with Him anyone."

I mean this just shows that Jinn are also good. We think all Jinn are bad, there are righteous among

them and there is a lesson we can learn from the Jinn also. Look at their eagerness for هداية. Look at

their eagerness to learn.

3: Half of it - or subtract from it a little

The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص is addressed over here in a certain way, it seems as though the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص was

resting wrapped up in a blanket or a shawl or he had just laid down, but he is told now reduce your

rest, now sleep will reduce. Because now, a very heavy responsibility is given to you. Now the

Quran is a part of your life.

And this is a reality that the biggest sacrifice and the most difficult sacrifice one has to make, when

coming to the دهني is one’s sleep and one’s rest. You couldn’t have been here today if you hadn’t

sacrificed your sleep, if you hadn’t sacrificed your rest. And likewise, we couldn’t be worshipping in

the night unless and until we were willing to give up some of our rest and some of our sleep.

Juzz # 29 2015 فهم القرأ ن

Suratul Muzzammil and Suratul Muddaththir, both of these surahs, they talk about قيام اللييل in which

the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص is being shaken up, he’s being woken up from his comfort zone, he’s been told to

get up and warn or get up and pray. These two surahs are one of the earliest surahs, the earliest

messages that were given to Rasool Allah ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص was what? That you must cut down on your rest now,

you must cut down on your comfort, on your sleep.

The fact is until a person does not give up on his sleep, he cannot move ahead. And over here

specifically يله الليح stand in the night, give up your sleep at night. How much? Half of the night. And ق

what should you do in that time? Pray instead. And half of the night, a little more or a little less.

Now just think about it, if we do not get to sleep for half of the night, what will happen to our days?

We would leave everything; we would leave all our work and sleep all day long. But Rasool Allah

is being commanded over here you sleep a little in the night and what do you do during the ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص

day? Your job of calling people to Allah . And in the night what is he asked to do? Recite the Quran

with تهيل Not in full speed that your focus is to complete the recitation rather recite slowly and .تح

properly. Why? Why this training in the night?

ي :5 قهل ثح نلقه عحلحيكح قح ح

ح ني ا هال …. Indeed, We will cast upon you a heavy word.

Because the قرأ ن is a heavy speech and to carry something heavy, you need to strengthen up. And

besides the process of وح was also very, very heavy upon Rasool Allah ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص.

Asma Bint Yazeed ريض هللا عهنا, she said, “When Suratul Mai’dah was revealed upon the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص

he was sitting on a camel and she happened to hold the rope of the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص’s camel and she said

from the pressure of the وح I felt that the front leg of the camel would break.”

Another companion زد نب اثبت ريض هللا عن, he said, “I used to write the وح for the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص, so

whenever the وح would come on him, he would shiver and sweat like beads of pearl would trickle

down from the side of his face and then when the state would subside, I would go to the Prophet

with a branch of date palm that was leafless and that was wide enough, so that he could record ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص

the وح on it, and the قرأ ن on it.” And he said, “I would write the وح and the whole experience of the

Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص just receiving وح and then him reciting it down was so heavy on him زد نب اثبت said, “I

would feel my leg would break and I would feel I would never be able to walk with that leg ever

again. And when I would finish writing then the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص would ask me to recite what I had

written. I would recite it and then the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص would make any corrections if necessary and then

he would go to the people in order to convey to them what had been revealed from

Allah تعالى و سبحانه .”

This is how the وح was revealed, this قرأ ن is indeed ثقيل لكم, it is indeed weighty, it is heavy. The

question is what weight, what importance do we give to the Book of Allah. Allah gives so much

importance to this Book. The skies were guarded, Jibreel was sent. The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص underwent

Juzz # 29 2015 فهم القرأ ن

great difficulty and to build the stamina, in order to receive وح, the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص for him, the night

prayer was made mandatory, he did not have a choice with regards to that.

Today we have the قرأ ن written in front of us in the most colourful and the most beautiful forms but

how much value do we give to the قرأ ن, how much do we guard it, how much do we love this

precious Book that has come from Allah?

The fact is if a person truly loves the لكم of Allah, then what happens? He is willing to give up his

sleep, he is willing to give up his comfort, he is willing to give up his rest for what? For this Book,

which is ‘ يح مهحالح بهي ال which is revelation from the Lord of the worlds. And the person who ,’تزنل مه رحي

is able to give the due importance to the word of Allah, then fortunate he is, then lucky he is, then

blessed he is. Because everything in this world is ةملن , it is cursed except for the كر of Allah and ذه

effective for concurrence [of heart and tongue] and more suitable for words.

Meaning the silence and the peace of the night, it allows you to focus on what you are reading. And

the worship of the night is also severe, very effective in trampling the نفس, in taming, in weakening

the نفس, in weakening the soul. And when the soul is weakened, only then can a person lead it,

instead of the soul leading a person.

The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص, he informed us that:

“The best prayer after the فرض prayer is the prayer of the night.”

And the prayer of the night, the تجد prayer what is its specialty? It is reciting the قرأ ن with تهيل in تح

this prayer.

Likewise, we learn the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said that:

“Hold fast to قيام اللييل for it is the practice of the righteous before you.”

And when a person recites the قرأ ن in قيام اللييل, this is the only way he can retain the قرأ ن, this is the

only way she can retain the قرأ ن, that she can keep connected with the Book of Allah, otherwise a

person may memorize, may study the Book of Allah in great lengths but very quickly it will leave. If

the person does not spend these moments of silence and peace with the Book of Allah in the night

time . And the fact is that when a person intends to worship Allah in the night time and intends to

spend the time with the قرأ ن in the night, then just for that very intention a person is rewarded.

Juzz # 29 2015 فهم القرأ ن

12In a حدث we learn the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:

“Whoever goes to bed intending to wake up and pray during the night, but is overwhelmed by sleep

until morning comes, then what he intended will be recorded for him and his sleep is the charity for

him from Allah.”

The reward is written and the sleep is a gift from Allah so enjoy it and also be happy about the fact

that for your firm intention, for your sincere intention Allah also had the reward written for you.

13

We also learn that when a person who has a beautiful wife or a very loving spouse and then soft

comfortable good bed but yet this person leaves that night sleep and he chooses to get up in the night,

reciting the Quran then Allah laughs at such a person….Meaning He is so happy at such a person,

that Allah laughs because of him, Allah smiles because of him….Allah says, “He leaves his desires

and remembers me and talks to me and if he wanted he could have slept… if he wanted he could

have slept….but he chose to spend his time with the Book of Allah…. He chose to spend his time

talking to Allah. So Allah is very happy with this person.

And the fact is when a person gives priority to reciting the Quran in the night time, it is only then that

the نفس will be controlled, it is only then that a person can take control over his نفس, tame it, gain

mastery over it, discipline it and the night prayer is also most suitable for the proper recitation of the

Quran. Why? Because:

7: Indeed, for you by day is prolonged occupation.

You’re so busy in the day that you do not get a chance to read the Quran without interruptions and

without distractions. Isn’t that so? For women especially, too many distractions and too many

interruptions.

And Rasool Allah ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص did that. And over here we are told about the qualities of a هغلي the one who ,مبح

Jabir Bin Abdullah, he said, the Messenger of Allah ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص, he visited us once and he saw a

dishevelled man whose hair was disordered, he said:

“Could this man not find something to make his hair lie down?”

Meaning to comb his hair…He saw another man wearing dirty clothes and he said,

“Could this man not find something to wash his clothes with?”

The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص did not like dirty clothes and this means, for our children, for ourselves also, what

is it that we should prefer? Not just when we go out in front of people but also when we are

worshipping Allah تعالى و سبحانه in privacy, our clothes should be clean.

ر ه هي طحابحكح فح يح ثه .… وح

Over here we learn… اصبهبيهكح فح لهرح وح ….

Because when a person is doing anything for the sake of Allah number one thing is what that is

needed? Is ب patience. That a person sits patiently, that a person worships Allah patiently, that a ,صح

person bears the hardships also with ب ب And when a person continues with .صح all the way to the صح

22: Then he frowned and scowled;

23: Then he turned back and was arrogant

24: And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others].

Allah says:

26: I will drive him into Saqar.

27: And what can make you know what is Saqar?

28: It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned],

29: Blackening the skins…. Scorching the skins.

30: Over it are nineteen [angels].

31: And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made

their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the

Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who

were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is

hypocrisy and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allah intend by this as an example?"…. as

a description? …. Thus, does Allah leave astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And

none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And mention of the Fire is not but a

reminder to humanity.

So the same mention it causes some people to become afraid of Allah, it causes them to change their

ways and the same mention can cause other people to become stubborn in their disbelief.

We see in these verses, on one hand the character of the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص is mentioned and on the other

hand, the character of his opponents is also mentioned over here. How noble Rasool Allah ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص was,

36: As a warning to humanity –

37: To whoever wills among you to proceed or stay behind.

Meaning on hearing this warning it’s up to a person if he wants to go forth and rush in the way of

Allah and get ahead, he can go ahead. He does not need to delay and a person who wishes to delay

then he can procrastinate as long as he wants. The choice is ours, but the result is definite, it is

coming, and the result will be according to our efforts.

And the person who abandons the prayer, what do we learn? The people of Hell will say, “We did

And the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said: “When he described a particular scene that he was shown of the غيب, when certain people were being punished and he said, “As for the first man whose head was being

Read the Quran but he neither recited it nor did he act upon it instead he slept through his prayers,

neglecting his prayers. Remember abandoning the prayer, leaving prayer is a deed that will lead a

Because when Jibreel would bring the قران to the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص before even the recitation was
