LESSON 15 SAMUEL THE KING-MAKER SUMMARY: People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7) God had warned Samuel about the danger of judging from appearance. As Samuel walked to Ramah, he remembered a little boy, left in the charge of a priest named Eli. He considered how upbringing shapes a man and how God uses even hardships and pain to prepare his servants. He wondered about David’s future. He remembered God’s unusual call in his own life, the unexpected voice in the night that Eli had identified for him as the Lord’s. The old priest had told him to answer, “Speak, for your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:10). Samuel never thought that God would make him a king maker. God gave all the messages for his people through Samuel. Samuel looked after his people as a Judge and the people trusted in him and followed his advice. SUMMARY:

People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart (1

Samuel 16:7) God had warned Samuel about the danger of judging from

appearance. As Samuel walked to Ramah, he remembered a little boy, left in

the charge of a priest named Eli. He considered how upbringing shapes a man

and how God uses even hardships and pain to prepare his servants. He

wondered about David’s future. He remembered God’s unusual call in his own

life, the unexpected voice in the night that Eli had identified for him as the

Lord’s. The old priest had told him to answer, “Speak, for your servant is

listening” (1 Samuel 3:10). Samuel never thought that God would make him a

king maker. God gave all the messages for his people through Samuel. Samuel

looked after his people as a Judge and the people trusted in him and followed

LESSON NO. 15 SAMUEL THE KING–MAKER

There lived a woman named Hannah in the village of

Ramah. Hannah did not have any children. She

wanted a son more than anything, so she prayed

and asked God to give her a son. She promised God

that if he would give her a son, she would give him

back to the LORD to serve him all the days of his life

God heard Hannah’s prayers and gave her the son

she asked for, whom she called Samuel. Hannah

kept her promise to God and when Samuel was old

enough, she took him to the temple and presented

him to Eli the priest. So Samuel served in the

temple under Eli.

One night Samuel was sleeping when he heard someone call his name. He got up and ran to Eli.

"Here I am; you called me," he said to Eli.

"I didn't call you," Eli answered, "go back to bed." So Samuel went back to bed.

He heard someone calling his name a second and

third time and he ran to Eli. But Eli did not call him. Finally the priest knew it was God calling Samuel.

He told Samuel, "Go and lie down, and if you hear

the voice again, say, 'Speak LORD, for your servant

is listening."

Samuel went back to bed and sure enough, again he heard the voice of God calling, "Samuel! Samuel!"

This time Samuel answered as Eli had told him, "Speak Lord, for your servant is listening."

LESSON NO. 15 SAMUEL THE KING–MAKER

God told Samuel that He had chosen him to be his

priest. Samuel grew up to be a great prophet.

When Samuel grew old, he made his sons judges

but they were not honest. So the people asked

Samuel to choose a king for them. Samuel prayed

to God and God chose a young man named Saul

to be the king. Samuel poured some oil on Saul’s

head and said “The Lord anoints you as ruler of

His people’

For some time Saul was a good king, but soon he

grew proud and disobedient. So God told Samuel

to go to Bethlehem to the house of Jesse as God

had chosen one of his sons to be the new king.

When Samuel saw David the youngest son of

Jesse, the Lord said to Samuel “This is the one,

anoint him’. So Samuel took oil and anointed

David as the new king.

David was a shepherd boy who had many talents.

He sang songs and played the harp. He loved God

and wrote many songs in praise of God.
