What is Microsoft Access 2007?

Microsoft Access 2007 is a Relational Database

Management System (RDBMS).

It is radically different from its previous versions, both

in terms of the graphical user interface design as well

as database capabilities.

It provides features for data definition, data

manipulation and data control.

A database created by using the Access 2007 is

stored in a single file with a file extension of ‘.accdb’.

MS Access 2007 Interface Elements

Office Button : It displays commonly used commands like open, new, save and print. It also displays the recently opened files.

Quick Access Toolbar : It provides commonly used options. It is similar to the previously available toolbar.

Customize Quick Access Toolbar button : It is used to customize the Quick Access Toolbar.

Microsoft Office Online : This section displays available online information. To use this, your PC must be connected to the Internet.

Local and Online Database Templates : Predefined templates or structures that can be used to easily create databases.

Table Views

Access allows you to see tables in :

Design view

Datasheet view.

The Design view displays the structure of the table

with attributes and their types.

The Datasheet view displays the data or records

stored in the table.

The Ribbon Component

The Ribbon consists of different tabs that consist of

different commands.

Access 2007 automatically displays the applicable

ribbon tab based on the current activity of the user.

The Ribbon displays different commands grouped

under Tabs.

Tabs are further divided into sections that ultimately

display the commands.

What is a Primary Key?

Primary key is a field that uniquely identifies a

record in a table

It has the following characteristics:

A Field whose value is always unique or whose value is

never duplicated.

A Field that cannot be left blank.

It is recommended that a table structure must always

be created with a primary key.

Primary Key Example

ID field is the primary key.

It has unique values

It is not empty

Other fields may have duplicate values or they may be empty

Wrap-up

Access 2007 is a RDBMS from Microsoft.

Design view of a table displays the structure of a table

while Datasheet view of a table shows the records of a

table.

Ribbon consists of tabs and tabs are divided into

sections. Section consists of commands.

Primary key uniquely identifies a record in a table.
