Lesson 1 is about how to take good care of your teeth. In this first lesson we will talk about how important dental care is for all of your health not just that of your mouth.

You may be surprised that we are going to look at more than just teeth in a lesson about dental health. Our goal for this lesson is to teach you how your body and mind affects your mouth health, and how your mouth health affects the health of the rest of your body.

The kinds of things that we are going to be talking about are:

• What is in your mouth?

• How is your mouth important for eating and talking?

• What medical conditions are related to good mouth health which means keeping a clean mouth.  We’ll talk about things like problems with your heart, diabetes or sugar, stroke, pneumonia, smoking, GERD (gastroesophageal or GE reflux disease where what is in your stomach comes back into your throat or mouth), and medicines that affect your mouth and teeth.

• There are other things that affect your mouth and teeth too. Grinding your teeth; vomiting into your mouth; putting food in your cheeks; not eating anything by mouth; and eating things that you shouldn’t eat like plastic bottle caps or stones.

You use your mouth in many ways.  It breaks down food into small pieces. Then you can swallow and digest the food.  Your body uses the digested food for energy to help your body work.

Your mouth also allows you to talk.  Mouths can help show your feelings. Your mouth also helps fight sickness by keeping harmful germs from entering your body.  Learning about your mouth will help you learn how to have good mouth health. This helps the rest of your health because your mouth and your body are connected.  What goes on in your mouth can affect the rest of your body and what goes on in the rest of your body can have an effect on your mouth.

Page 6: Lesson 1 Dental Overall Health › ... › Lesson1_SCC.pdfLesson 1 is about how to take good care of your teeth. In this first lesson we will talk about how important dental care is

Your mouth tells us about the rest of your health.  A visit to the dentist is not just about teeth. Your dentist can sometimes tell what diseases and medical problems you have by looking at your mouth.

During your dental visit and exam, your dentist might see something in your mouth that is a sign or symptom of an illness or disease that you might not even know you have.  So if your dentist sees something that doesn’t belong there, like a blister or sore, he or she can refer you to your doctor for treatment.

Your dentist can also make sure you get special dental care if you need it.  If you have a chronic illness like diabetes, you may need special dental care.  With other conditions you might need to see an oral surgeon.  This might happen if you have to have your wisdom teeth taken out.

Your mouth health can affect other medical conditions.  If you have diabetes, an infection in your mouth can make your blood‐sugar levels go up or down.  This makes your diabetes harder to control.  Gum disease may cause heart disease.  Smoking or the use of smokeless tobacco can also hurt your health.  These cause gum disease, dry mouth and bad breath.

Many other things affect your oral health.  People with weak immune systems may get infections in their mouth.  The immune system protects the body from germs. Disease, cancer treatment, and other drugs that you take if you had a transplant can make your immune system weak.  Other medications can also affect the health of your mouth. Some drugs cause dry mouth.  This can make your teeth decay or your mouth get an infection.

So remember, the health of your mouth often helps tell about all of your health.  A visit to the dentist is not just about teeth. It is also about good health!

Take‐away Lesson

Every lesson we will have something that we call the Take‐away Lesson. This is the important information that you should have learned from this lesson. Today’s take‐away lesson has two parts:

1. Disease or illness and behaviors like smoking can hurt your mouth and teeth.

2. Good dental care helps keep your mouth healthy.

Remember the Take‐away, and get ready for Lesson 2!
