“The Missionary, the Messiah, and His Mission”

ROMANS 1:1-17

The Missionary and His Credentials, 1:1, 5

A. He is a slave of Jesus (1:1a).B. He is an apostle, an

ambassador sent by Jesus (1:1b).

C. He has been set apart to preach the Good News about Jesus (1:1c).

D. He is to do missions to the nations for Jesus (1:5).

1:2. Si Pablo na alipin ni Jesucristo, na tinawag na maging apostol, ibinukod sa evangelio ng Dios, ALIPIN, DOULOS, SERVANT. The proper meaning of the word servant, δουλος doulos, is slave, one who is not free. It expresses the condition of one who has a master, or who is at the control of another” (Barnes).

“Called to be an apostle - This word called means here not merely to be invited, but has the sense of appointed. It indicates that he had not assumed the office him-self, but that he was set apart to it by the authority of Christ himself” (Barnes).

The word translated “separated unto,” αφοριζω aphorizo, means to designate, to mark out by fixed limits, to bound as a field, etc. It denotes those who are “sepa-rated,” or called out from the common mass; Acts 19:9; 2 Cor 6:17.” (Barnes)..

Christians are the only slaves (Gr. douloi) who are more privileged than others. They have:(1)A Master who ransomed

them at a very great price: His own body!

(2)A Master who wanted them to join Him in His heavenly family.

(3)A Master who promised greater rewards.

(4)A Master who sees them through the troubles of every day.

1:5. Na sa pamamagitan niya'y tinanggap namin ang biyaya at pagkaapostol, sa pagtalima sa pananampalataya sa lahat ng mga bansa, dahil sa kaniyang pangalan;

Paul calls his life “grace.”

That is life after he received forgiveness of

sins. He also calls his

apostleship “grace.” What should you call

yours?

c. Every Christian is to consider himself set apart to preach the Christ.

d.Everyone he gets into contact with is a field that needs sowing.

The Messiah that Paul theMissionary Proclaims, 1:2-4.

A. The Messiah foretold in the Old, 1:2.

1:2. Na kaniyang ipinangako nang una sa pamamagitan ng kaniyang mga propeta sa mga banal na kasulatan, 1:3 Tungkol sa kaniyang Anak, na ipinanganak sa binhi ni David ayon sa laman,

THOUGHTS TO CONSIDER:a. The Jesus we proclaim is a Being

who is amply witnessed by and abundant-ly discussed in both the Old and New Testaments.

b. The Jesus we proclaim is:The solution to our bafflements;The answer to our ills;The comfort in troublesome

times;The court of last recourse.

The Missionary and the Christians in Rome, 1:6-15

A. The identity of this church, 1:6-7.

B. His thankful intercession for this church, 1:8-10.

C. His interest in this church, 1:11-13.

D. His indebtedness to them, 1:14-15.

The Identity of this Church, 1:6-7.

1:6. Sa mga ito kayo naman ay tina-wag kay Jesucristo: 1:7. Sa lahat ninyong nangasa Roma, mga iniibig ng Dios, tinawag na mangagbanal: Sumainyo nawa ang biyaya at kapayapaang mula sa Dios na ating Ama at Panginoong Jesu-cristo.

THOUGHTS TO CONSIDERA. Every Christian is holy at

baptism, and is called to holiness in everyday life.

B. Every Christian life begins with grace and ends with grace.

C. Christian life is a life of inner peace.

His Thankful Intercession for this Church, 1:8-10.

1:8 Kaunaunahan, ay nagpapasala-mat ako sa aking Dios sa pamama-gitan ni Jesucristo tungkol sa inyong lahat, na ang inyong pananampa-lataya ay bantog sa buong sang-libutan.

1:9 Sapagka't ang Dios ang aking saksi, na siyang pinaglilingkuran ko sa aking espiritu sa evangelio ng kaniyang Anak, na walang patid na akin kayong binabang-git, sa aking mga panalangin,

1:10. At laging isinasamo ko, kung ngayon sa wakas sa anomang paraan ay magkapalad ako sa kalooban ng Dios na makarating sa inyo.

THOUGHTS TO CONSIDER:A.Make it a daily habit to pray

and be thankful to God for the church.

B.Make it your aim to help that church show forth its light. Work together with the brethren.

C.Every corner of this world is a hidden alley that needs you.

His Interest in this Church, 1:11-13.

1:11 Sapagka't ninanasa kong makita kayo, upang ako'y makapamahagi sa inyo ng kaloob na ukol sa espiritu, upang kayo'y mangagsitibay;

1:12 Sa makatuwid baga, upang ako't kayo ay maaliw sa inyo, ang bawa't isa sa atin sa pananampalataya ng iba, ang sa inyo at sa akin.

1:13. At hindi ko ibig, mga kapa-tid, na hindi ninyo matalastas na madalas kong inaakalang maka-rating sa inyo (datapuwa't hang-gang ngayon ako'y nahahad-langan), upang magkaroon naman ako sa inyo ng anomang bunga, na gaya sa mga ibang Gentil.

THOUGHTS TO CONSIDER:A. Charismatic gifts were meant for a

time. Don’t use it as a crutch on which to lean on. If the Lord had meant it to stay, it would have stayed.

B. Every member owes it to each other to look for what is weak in himself. This is to realize that you need strength from above.

C. The strength of the church against social pressures also lies in its stick-to-it-ness to a cause. We stand or fall together.

His Indebtedness to this Church, 1:14-15.

1:14 Ako'y may utang sa mga Griego at gayon din naman sa mga barbaro, sa marurunong at gayon din sa mga mangmang.

1:15 Kaya nga, sa ganang akin, ay handa akong ipangaral din ang evangelio sa inyong nangasa Roma.

THOUGHTS TO CONSIDERYour salvation is a debt that you cannot pay.

But that others must be told about the good news of salvation is a debt you must pay.

The method of paying this debt is in accordance with the latent talent you have, according to opportunity, and according to love.

The Missionary and His Confidence, 1:16-17.

A. His confidence that the gospel is the power to save sinners, 1:16.

B. His confidence that the gospel could bring about sanctifying faith to sinners, 1:17.

1:16. Sapagka't hindi ko ikinahihiya ang evangelio: sapagka't siyang kapangyarihan ng Dios sa ikaliligtas ng bawa't sumasampalataya; una'y sa Judio, at gayon din sa Griego.

1:17. Sapagka't dito ang katuwiran ng Dios ay nahahayag mula sa pananam-palataya hanggang sa pananampala-taya: gaya ng nasusulat, Nguni't ang ganap ay mabubuhay sa pamamagitan ng pananampalataya.

CONSIDER THESE THOUGHTS

The shame of the cross is that sinners thought Jesus died like them, as a criminal!

The glory of that cross is that one inno-cent Man who was shamed by sinful men had died, one innocent Life for all sinful lives.

That cross exposed the shamelessness of us: We ought to have been the ones crucified there, but he died in our stead!

There is no sin so great that the gospel cannot erase.

The faith in the Christ helps you realize that His gospel is His only way to make a change in you.

The gospel shows God’s righteous-ness that declares man righteous apart from works.
