1. In college, students cannot predict the
vicissitudes of their career paths—even if they feel confident in their vision of their
future.

2. In the world of work, competencies that
denote a broad sense of “professionalism” are
prized.

across professions.

“We document a wide range of duties assigned to and assumed by foreign
language educators working in schools... not only translation and interpretation, but also much more
demanding roles as surrogate counselors, administrators, and
teachers of English and other content areas.” Soria Colomer

Latinos…: (a) language competence; (b) cultural knowledge in multiple
contexts; (c) empathy toward clients; and (d) the will to act.” Laneskog,

“What types of LC interactions…lead to greater levels of trust between
providers and patients? What sociolinguistic features, intonation patterns, and demonstrations of politeness are associated with
successful LC encounters?” Glenn Martínez

4. In our survey, another profile emerges:
community service learning students who
“try on” professions and explore language/career
connections.

What was your initial purpose for taking this class?
• continue to learn Spanish, improve on my speaking skills so that I can pass the Spanish content test in order to teach a bilingual class
• Seemed like an awesome way to combine my interest in community development and Spanish.
• I wanted to see what it was like to help out in the local hispanic community. I wanted to see what the culture was like here in the US (specifically Champaign as well), and if I would enjoy this type of work/situation.

Do you wish you would have chosen a different community
partner? Why? Yes: 17.2% No: 82.8%
I really enjoyed the experience in the classroom; I had never been in a bilingual classroom before, and it revealed to me a lot of things about myself. I figured out that that type of setting is not for me personally (this is not a critique of the class or anything like that). I have always liked kids, but I realize I am better in a one-on-one setting instead of helping out with so many at one time. However, I do not regret this experience in this setting at all and truly appreciate the opportunity to be in a classroom environment. I learned from the kids, and they learned from me. It was a great experience.

How did you choose your community partner?
• I chose the Refugee Center because at the time I was thinking of going into the career field of translation and I thought I might get practice in that there.
• I chose the refugee center because I wanted to know how to help immigrant, Spanish speaking people (and families) since I wish to be an interpreter when I graduate from university and I would like to work with recent immigrants.
• I chose to work with Prairie Elementary School to explore the possibility of teaching in a bilingual classroom.

Has this class helped you set your future career and/or Spanish
language goals? • It was great practicing Spanish with the students because I want to
someday [be] a bilingual or partially-bilingual speech therapist. • After seeing some of the ways that can be used in a real-life context, I
am hoping to work in a field which will allow me to work with immigrants and provide assistance in some capacity.

Cont’d: Has this class helped you set your future career and/or
Spanish language goals? • 232 and 332 helped me to discover exactly what I could be doing with
languages. I'm currently assistant teaching English in Colombia-- which is something I don't think I would have decided to do without the courses and the community work that I started while enrolled in the courses.
• it provoked my interest in ESL education...it has also given me a better idea of the interaction and cultural climate amongst the countries in latin america...something that will be good for me to know as I work in the health field with immigrants from all over latin / south america
