Les Voiles d'Antibes Hi Peter, after a great week in Antibes for the opening Panerai event for 2016, the Les Voiles d'Antibes, I am now in Porto Santo Stefano in Tuscany eagerly awaiting the commencement of the Panerai Argentario Sailing Week regatta. Antibes was fantastic, with an entry list of 77 boats in a range of categories, which included the mighty Fifes Cambria 135' (1928), Moonbeam of Fife III 98' (1903), Moonbeam IV 105' (1920) and Hallowe'en 70' (1926). Other yachts included the Panerai flagship Fifes Eilean 72' (1936) the S&S yawl Argyll 56' (1948) and the Herreshoff New York Yacht Club 40's Rowdy (1916) and Chinook (1916). Of interest is that Cambria is skippered by an Aussie, a guy called Chris Markham from Adelaide. The wind strength hovered around the 8-10kts range for the majority of the regatta and as such racing was largely restricted to inshore only which gave spectators a great view over proceedings. In the big boat category Moonbeam IV was the winner on handicap from Cambria , Moonbeam III and Hallowe'en. The guys on Moonbeam had a novel means of celebrating their victories each afternoon as they returned to the dock. Whilst it would put a smile on David Mackenzie's face, it likely had the opposite effect on their rivals. Results of the other classes are available athttp://www.voilesdantibes.com/resultats The Les Voiles d'Antibes is a wonderful regatta set in the historic coastal port of Antibes on the Cote d'Azur with a history dating back over 2000 years to the ancient Greeks followed by the Romans. The town has a lovely vibe devoid of a lot of pretentiousness of the neighboring Cannes, although some of the super-yachts in the marina may suggest otherwise. The food and wine was great as was the entertainment with bands and dance parties extending into the early hours each night. This regatta is a must for anybody who loves classic yachts. Bon appetite!
