Lepus(/lips/, colloquially/lps/) is aconstellationlying just south of thecelestial equator, immediately south ofOrion. Its name isLatinforhare. Although the hare does not represent any particular figure inGreek mythology, Lepus was one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd century astronomerPtolemy, and it remains one of the 88 modern constellations. It is located below the constellation Orion (the hunter), and is sometimes represented as a hare being chased by Orion or, alternatively, by Orion's hunting dogs.[1]This constellation should not be confused withLupus, the wolf.

Lepus is most often represented as a rabbit being hunted byOrion, whose hunting dogs (Canis MajorandCanis Minor) pursue it. The constellation is also associated with some lunar mythology, including theMoon rabbit.[2]Four stars of this constellation (, , , Lep) form a quadrilateral and are known asArsh al-Jawz', "the Throne of Jawz'" orKursiyy al-Jawz' al-Mu'akhkhar, "the Hindmost Chair of Jawz'" andal-Nihl, "theCamelsQuenching Their Thirst" inArabic.
