DAVID BRoMLey

When David Bromley discovered that the

late Victorian Boom premises on Chapel

Street, affectionately known in more recent

years as the “Old Dan Murphy Building”,

was available for lease, he jumped at the

opportunity. In its heyday, the grand three

storey, multi-front building was the Prahran

Arcade and then housed such diverse tenants

as the Arcade Club Hotel, an operator of

Turkish baths and, towards the end of the

20th century, a studio for the late Howard

Arkley. The space was dilapidated and it’s

only inhabitants a flock of pigeons. It was

very much a shell; with walls revealing

through crumbling plaster, the bones of a

grand old building that was yearning for

some vision, some love and some fun!

When David first set eyes on the longest

Victorian corridor in the Southern

Hemisphere, which runs the entire length

of the building, it was then that he began

to conceive what would become David

Bromley’s studio, gallery and a beautiful

private space to bring clients for discreet

viewings and gatherings. The space was

so different and unique in Melbourne that

everyone wanted to use it. Over the last five

years, Barry Humphries has chosen it for a

book launch, Penfolds for a wine campaign

and no less than the iconic fashion house,

Chanel, decided David’s studio would

provide the perfect backdrop for one of their

famed fashion shows. So for more than five

years, this grand but personal space has been

seen by few, but has excited the curiousity

of many. Now, David opens his doors to the

public for this unprecedented auction.

The atmosphere of the rooms, and the

collection they house, is a thoughtful contrast

from the magical setting that, until late last

year, was his space in Daylesford. Occupying

both extraordinary light-filled spaces and

dark, moody corners, this collection is as

diverse and eclectic as the previous two

auctions. Here, within this vast Victorian

wonderland, collectors and admirers of

David’s work are given the opportunity to

see how his very specific collecting can

be enjoyed and presented. Having now

dispersed his collections from South Yarra

and Daylesford, Leonard Joel is delighted

to be offering this final part of the David

Bromley Collection in Melbourne.

In addition to the collection, David is now

seeking expressions of interest for the

leasehold of this landmark property at 280

Chapel Street, Prahran. It is with mixed

emotions that he offers another individual or

corporation the rare opportunity to occupy

what must surely be one of Melbourne’s most

coveted spaces.

Having moved north to establish a new studio

by the sea and with new creative visions to

occupy him, this auction represents a final

opportunity to secure a piece of the magic

that is David Bromley’s world.

Leonard Joel is thrilled to be part of this final

dispersal of David’s collection in Melbourne

and to be assisting him in the marketing of

this unique Chapel Street leasehold. We look

forward to welcoming you at the viewing and

wish you every success at the auction.

ABoRIGInAL ART ResuLTs

At Leonard Joel on Thursday November

25th an evening auction of 200 aboriginal

works of art and tribal artefacts were

offered for auction. Sophie Ullin, our

resident Aboriginal & Tribal art specialist,

carefully selected these works for both

provenance and fair market price and

the result was perfect for a market that is

clearly in its early restoration phase. Prices

achieved ranged from several hundred

dollars through to ten thousand plus works

and the well attended room displayed keen

interest in certain artists. Sophie Ullin

after the auction commented: “It was clear

tonight that the collectors present remain

passionate about aboriginal art and are

committed to remaining in the market

and ensuring the viability of a secondary

market that, like it or not, is critical to the

integrity of the aboriginal art market as a

whole. At Leonard Joel we are committed

to step by step rebuilding confidence and

price stability in this market and I believe

we are heading in the right direction. Of

the 200 plus works offered we enjoyed

a sale rate by lot of 79% and by value of

62%. People who know the challenges

facing this market will know that these

numbers bode well for a gradual recovery.”

Highlights of the auction included a work

by Emily Kame Kngwarreye lot 119 that

realised $12,200 IBP and a rather unusual

group of spearheads lot 26 that after strong

bidding realised $2,684 IBP. The steady

march toward more “digital” auctions was

also clear with the greatest number of live

online bidders recorded for any art auction.

Entries are now being invited for our next

boutique aboriginal art auction scheduled

for 2013.

For too long auctions in Perth have been left

to the locals and eastern seaboard auction

houses have grappled with how to conduct

an auction in an economic fashion on the

other side of the country. John D’Agata,

Head of Fine Jewellery at Leonard Joel, got

tired of the old line “it’s too far away” and

realised something obvious that seems to

have escaped Australian auction houses for

the best part of 100 years and that is that it

is relatively easy to transport jewellery and

precious stones across the country! With

that in mind Leonard Joel, to its knowledge,

is bringing to Perth the first serious fine

jewellery and precious stone auction for the

state. The auction will be geared to West

Australian clients with a complete focus on

their market. John D’Agata: “Bringing this

$1,000,000 plus collection to Perth is not

an afterthought – no way. We have built this

collection, its marketing and its presentation

with WA clients in mind. If clients from

other states bid at the auction via the internet

and find it online then terrific but it will

only be viewed and auctioned in Perth for

the convenience of West Australian clients.”

Party and preview will take place at Greenhill

Galleries, Claremont with an opening night

scheduled and sponsored by none other than

the world famous Margaret River winemaker

Fermoy Estate. The collection can be viewed

from Wednesday 21 November through to

Saturday 24 November with the auction

starting on Sunday 25 November at 2pm.

The auction and viewing will be overseen

by not only the Head of Fine Jewellery John

D’Agata but also the firm’s proprietor John

Albrecht who will be taking the auction. John

Albrecht, Managing Director of Leonard

Joel: “I’m thrilled that Leonard Joel will be

conducting the first serious WA-focused

auction by an eastern seaboard auctioneer

and WA clients can expect nothing less than

expert advice, a truly interesting collection

and the excitement of a local auction”.

The Leonard Joel fine jewellery department have secured a rare

collection of jewellery, boxes and objets de vitrine from a private

Sydney collection. The collection was assembled over half a century

throughout the auction rooms of Australia and abroad and represents

an increasingly rare opportunity for collectors to view the very intimate

collecting habits of an individual. Under instructions from Mr Tim

Goodman, adviser to the attorneys, this single-owner collection will

be offered as part of the December 2nd 2012 fine jewellery auction.

JaPanEsE ARTiST in foCUSThe recent Modern Design Auction

witnessed an interesting Japanese work

go under the hammer. Lot 77, ‘La Maree

Baser’ 1957, by Yasukazu (Yasse) Tabuchi

reflected the post WWII French school of

Tachisme or Art Informel, and characterized

by spontaneous brushwork and drips or

blobs of paint. After graduating from Tokyo

University, Tabuchi travelled to Paris in 1951

and took up study at La Sorbonne with solo

exhibitions soon following in France, Italy,

USA and West Germany. Like other Japanese

artists, Tabuchi only became known and

admired in his homeland once he ‘made it’ in

the West, this exemplified by his admission

to the collection of the Museum of Modern

Art, Tokyo. Artworks by Tabuchi are also

housed in major institutions such as the

Musee d´art Moderne, Paris, Musée de

Leverkusen, Germany. Estimated at $800-

$1,200, the work was finally knocked down

for $2,196 (including bp) and represented an

excellent opportunity to own an early work.

Yasse Tabuchi passed away in 2009.

HeNNINGSeN LIGHTS Up MoDerN DeSIGN AUCTIoNOn Sunday October 8th 2012 Leonard Joel

offered its second curated auction of Modern

furnishings, objects, lighting, art and design.

Almost 300 lots went under the hammer

with some extraordinary results indicating

the changing tastes amongst collectors that

are now willing to embrace and “pay up”

for quality post-war pieces. The highest

price for the afternoon auction was for lot

157A, a beautifully intricate light fitting in

the manner of an artichoke and designed by

Poul Henningsen, that realised a staggering

$13,420 (IBP) against a low estimate of

just $3,600. The strength of interest in

Featherston pieces continued with half of the

top ten results for the auction going to the

enigmatic mid-century Melbourne designer.

Lot 98, a rare “Obo” chair designed in 1974

by Featherston that resembled a giant brown

velvet tennis ball, confirmed the demand

for the local designer when it realised

$7,320 (IBP). The result lead someone at the

auction to comment that “that was a hell of

a price for a beanbag!” Interest and bidding

was not just reserved for the sleek and the

clean – two heavily worn pairs of Newman

College chairs in need of restoration (lots 15

and 16) by Walter Burley Griffin and dating

from 1916 realised $6,710 (IBP) and $5,612

(IBP) respectively. International designers

such as Eames, Wenger, Vodder, Bellmana,

Saarinen, Wikkelsoe and Bianconi were also

represented and enjoyed strong interest

from buyers willing to look beyond the

local designers Featherston and Krimper.

Amongst the interest in international lots, lot

142, a GE236/4 sofa by Hans Wenger realised

$4,800 (IBP). The auction realised in excess

of $250,000 (IBP) and firmly positioned

Leonard Joel as the Melbourne auction

house for post-war design buyers and sellers.

HoRse RACInG

This sale includes a comprehensive

collections of Australian horse racing

memorabilia amassed by Norm Cove, a much

loved Caulfield Racecourse identity. Norm's

lifelong passion for horse racing began at

the age of nine when he visited Caulfield for

the first time. After serving in New Guinea

and Morotai during WW2 Norm took a part-

time job as a groundsman at Caulfield and

for more than 50 years he attended every

Caulfield Cup, always positioned near the

winning post in his trademark suit and hat.

His love of racing was for the horses and

the atmosphere of the racetrack, rather than

betting. In fact, he never once placed a bet: "I

never had the time". Norm's favourite horses

included Ajax, Bernborough, Phar Lap and

Gunsynd.

In recent times, Norm also worked as a tour

guide at Caulfield’s Racing Museum for more

than a decade and he would entertain visitors

with fascinating stories from the racecourse.

Over the years he collected a wide range of

racing memorabilia including Melbourne

Cup and Caulfield Cup race photographs,

race books, membership badges and other

ephemera. The highlight of the collection is

a whip presented to rider Billy Duncan for

winning the 1932 Melbourne Cup on "Peter

Pan", estimate $10,000-15,000. Norm passed

away in 2011.

The sale also features other horse racing and

sporting memorabilia including Melbourne

Cup hitching posts, silks, football cards and

cricket autographs.
