INTRODUCTIONAs an exercise in large-scale web development, we worked as a “class development team” to design a communications portal for all design students at UNL. The primary goal for this site was to create a one stop source for (in the order of importance): jobs, internships, news, events, resources and ideally to foster a design community.

A core concept we focused on is UCD or user-centered design.

User-centered design is a design philosophy that puts the user of a product, application or experience at the center of the design process. In UCD, a designer strives for a detailed understanding of the needs, wants and limitations of the people who will use the end product and then makes design choices that incorporate this understanding.UCD requires that designers not only analyze and foresee how users engage but also test their designs.

INITIAL DESIGNSOn the initial designs, I tried to make my site design look really similar to the UNL website. I tried to maintain the color scheme, the look and feel and even the navigation features.

After the usability studies, I learned that there were a lot of things that needed to be addressed. For example, I needed a logo, to address the typography, and to change the color palette.

IMPROVED DESIGNSAfter a few different iterations these are the designs I ended up with. I changed the background to gray, and made the sight longer and skinnier. I used different typography to create a sense of a logo. I also changed the navigation. I added a footer as well so that the navigation is easier from all point of the page and site. The biggest and best change I made was taking the text off of the pictures. Text is always difficult to see over pictures, so this was a great choice.

REFLECTION

After seeing everyone else’s design in class, I think the one thing I really missed out on was the day in class that there was an initial critique. Granted I was sick, the lesson here is that there is nothing as valuable as feedback. Nonetheless, i was able to get some from my peers and my instructor, and that helped.

Another thing I learned during the course of this project was what a portal is. Although we did not

go into the most specific detail, I ended the project understanding more about what a portal is and best practices for designing one.

After the final critique, I think that there is definitely still work to be done on my version of the UNL design portal. There are definitely things that are working, and I think with more iterations, I can have a great final design.
