Congratulations to our newest Eagle Scout!

Club Member Nick Sargent from Troop 477, which we sponsor, earned Scouting's highest rank of Ea-

gle Scout! He's a Mighty Woodsman too, having backpacked close to 90 miles though the Wilderness

at the Philmont Scout ranch in New Mexico. For his Eagle Project, he built garden beds & compost

bins for the Growing Places Community Garden. Congratulations Nick!

Spring 2016

Close to 500,000 brook, brown, rainbow, and tiger trout will be stocked this spring from Mass Wildlife's

five hatcheries located in Sandwich, Palmer, Belchertown, Sunderland, and Montague. The close to

500,000 fish being stocked this spring, coupled with the more than 66,000 12+ inch trout stocked last

fall, should provide some excellent fishing in the coming months. Stocking is scheduled to begin in the

southeastern area of the state during the first full week of March with other regions of the state ex-

pected to follow soon after.

Link to the Stocking Schedules below for the latest stocking information (these pages are updated each

Friday by noon) or view Trout Stocked Waters for a list of Massachusetts waters that are usually

stocked in the spring and fall. Contact your local MassWildlife District Office for more information.

The use of any lead fishing sinkers and lead jigs weighing less than 1 ounce is now prohibited in all

Massachusetts inland waters (freshwater). Examples of prohibited tackle weighing less than 1 ounce

include but are not limited to: split shot, bottom-bumping jigs, bullet weights, lead sinkers, or jigs which

Black Bears Are Active and Searching for Food: Take Precautions Black bears are now active and seeking food. If you live in northern Middlesex County, Worcester County, western MA, or other areas where bears have been spotted, it's time to take down your bird feeders. Bears will often ignore natural foods such as skunk cabbage in favor of an easy meal at a back yard bird feeder. To avoid this problem, MassWildlife asks prop-erty owners to be proactive by removing bird feeders and other potential food sources including garbage or open compost. Individuals should also properly secure bee hives, chickens, and livestock.

There are at least 4,500 Black Bears in Massachusetts and their range is expanding eastward. Take action by educating yourself and your neighbors about proactive measures to avoid conflicts with bears. Visit Mass.gov/Bears for more detailed information and do your part to keep bears wild

Spring Turkey Season Opens 4/25: Hunting Reminders and Safety Tips The spring turkey hunting season opens in Massachusetts on April 25, 2016. MassWildlife offers the following information for turkey hunters regarding regulations, harvest reporting, and safety. Find complete wild turkey regulations athttp://www.eregulations.com/massachusetts/huntingandfishing/wild-turkey/.

Turkey Permits. In order to legally hunt wild turkeys, a current hunting or sporting license and wild turkey hunting permit is required. Licenses and turkey permits are available via the MassFishHunt system, at license vendors or atMassWildlife offices.

Bearded Birds Only in Spring. The annual bag limit is two turkeys per year either by: (a) two bearded birds in spring

season (one per day) with NO fall turkey hunting allowed, or (b) one bearded bird in spring season and one bird of either

sex in fall season. No hunter may take two birds in the fall season.

Harvest Reporting. Immediately following harvest, hunters must fill out and affix the tag from their turkey permit to the turkey. The turkey must be reported either online via the MassFishHunt system or at a traditional check station within 48 hours of harvest and before the bird is processed for food or taxidermy. The MassFishHunt system generates a confirma-tion number which must be written on the harvest tag attached to the turkey; the confirmation number serves as the official seal. The tag (or metal seal from a checkstation) must remain on the bird until it is processed for food or for taxidermy.

Young Adult Turkey Hunters. Young Adult Turkey Hunt Permits will NOT be mailed to youth hunters. All youths partici-pating in the hunt must obtain the Youth Turkey Hunt permit and certificate through the MassFishHunt system. To obtain

your permit/certificate, all past participants must fill out and return the past participant form . Those who harvest a tur-key on the Young Adult Turkey Hunt date (April 23, 2016) must report their harvest either online on MassFishHunt or at a traditional check station within 48 hours.

Congratulations to these fine Marksmen in our Patriot's Day Match! First we did the Rattle Battle Team Rifle match with Slow, Rapid & "Mad Minute" stages. The Champions were the A-Team

from Agawam -Adrian, Tom, Michael & William - with 250 points;

our own Winter Riflemen -Joe, Pete, Denny, & Keith came in second with 209 points; and our Seniors - Duke, Stephan Jim & Art came in third with 181 points. Next came Pistol Plates - com-peting head to head, double elimination. Whoever drops all 6 plates quickest or knocks down the most in 10 shots wins. Adrian Rutkowski is the Champ this year, Michael Graveline came in 2nd, and Keith Host came in 3rd. Thanks to all the fine competitors, we were able to send a nice

check to GOAL to keep fighting for our Second Amendment Freedoms in Boston!!

Winter Rifle Matches -

The Winter Rifle matches are over for now -here are the March results: Steve Wojciak came in 1st place in the Expert Class, with a 182- 2X average! Keith Host came in 1st in the Sharpshooter Class with a 169-1X average! Al Hatch came in 1st in the Marksman Class, with a 145 average! There is no better way to improve your rifleman skills during the off-season than some friendly competition in offhand matches, shooting unsupported, standing up at 100 yards. Shooters start off with the personal goal of getting all 20 shots on the paper, then all in the rings, then all in the black, then all in the X-ring! Congratulations to all the fine Riflemen that competed this sea-

son! We'll start up again next December.

Rifle Range Cleanup May 14 & 15, 2016 9:00am til 3:00pm

Its that time again if you use the range or just have a passing interest in making the club look great to

those who visit or use our facilities as quests, we hope you'll join us to help make the range look great

for another season. Well be doing general cleanup, painting, building frames & bases, cleaning up

brush and a whole variety of things. Come on up , bring racks, screw guns, shovels, hammers or any-

thing and everything that you think might help. Lets make this another successful clean up and spiff up

weekend at the rifle range. Rifle Range Committee

LSA NEWSLETTER ARTICLE/REPORT ON 9 APRIL 2016 CLEAR-CUTS SEEDING WORK-PARTY PROJECT

On April 9, 2016, by 8:00 a.m., thirty (30) hard-working and dedicated volunteers showed up at Camp Bartlett for the Clear-Cuts Wildlife Habitat Improvement Seeding Project. The day started with freezing temperatures and frost in the soil surface, but bright sun amid scattered cumulus clouds soon thawed out the soil and made working conditions, with light breezes and tem-peratures in the mid-40s, ideal. By 11:30 a.m. the volunteers had seeded all four (4) new clear-cuts, totaling twenty (21) acres, using ten (10) 50 lb. bags of annual rye-grass seed and seven (7) 50 lb. bags of oat seed. Along the way they made brush piles for rabbit and ruffed grouse cover. Three or four volunteers next seeded the log-landing area and the lower cut—between the tow-er road and the seep drainage easterly of the big clear-cut--using another bag of oat seed. We are most grateful to all the volun-teers, named below, whose efforts will improve habitat, cover, and/or forage for the following species: rabbit, deer, pheasant, ruffed grouse, woodcock, broad-winged hawk, American kestrel, blue-winged warbler, prairie warbler, eastern towhee, eastern bluebird.
