ABSTINENCE AND FASTING

All Catholics who have reached their 14th year are bound to abstain en rely from meat on Ash Wednesday and on the Fridays of Lent. All Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are also bound to observe the laws of fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This means limi ng oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Two other light meals, which together do not equal a full meal, may be taken during the day.

As we prepare for and enter into Lent 2017, prayerfully reflect on your life: What do I need to turn away from? What do I need to turn toward? How will I do so in the Lenten Season to come?

Dear Friends :

Lent 2017 is a time for us to pray for dramatic missionary growth in the Diocese of Rockville Centre.

Part of that dramatic missionary growth is stimulated by our willingness to invite our inactive

Catholic friends back to Mass.

I put it this way in my Installation Mass homily on January 31: I appeal on this day of my In-

stallation as the fifth Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre to every inactive Catholic in the

Diocese to come back to the power of the Word of God, the power of the Sacrament of Penance,

and the power of the Catholic Mass.

I am so very sorry if you have been hurt or disappointed by the Church in any way and we stand here today to support you, to love you and to listen to you.

The power of these gentle and compassionate invitations is enormous. They always plant a seed of grace. And now 's the time to make these invitations. Let's all do it together and realize that it is the kindest thing any of us could do for anyone..

When we die, we will all look lovingly into the merciful eyes of Jesus and review our life with him. The people whom we have helped to invite back to Mass and their Catholic faith will be standing around us with radiant smiles. And we want a big crowd!

We connect our Lenten 2017 prayer, fasting and almsgiving together to this intention and to our constant intention to pray for our brothers and sisters who are poor, hungry, suffering from war, violence or persecution in our world.

You and your families are all daily in my prayers and Masses. Thank you for your witness of "holiness and mission" to the world. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Saints and Special Observances Sunday: Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: Julian Calendar Lent begins Wednesday: Ash Wednesday; Fast and Abs nence Friday: St. Katharine Drexel; Abs nence; First Friday; World Day of Prayer Saturday: St. Casimir; First Saturday

Don’t Be Anxious People have, it seems, a natural penchant for misplaced emphasis on unimportant things. They can easily get caught up with what they’re having for dinner or what they will wear.

O en it is a tragedy that helps people to refocus on what is really important. What I shall wear is an irrelevant ques on when I am facing surgery or chemotherapy. What’s for dinner is immaterial to those living through grief or unemployment.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us not to worry. He doesn’t say, “Don’t eat. Don’t cook. Don’t buy clothes.” He says, “Don’t worry.” Jesus asks us not to relinquish our responsibili es but to let go of our anxiety. Anxiety betrays a lack of trust and Jesus reminds us that “Your heavenly Father knows” all that you need (Ma hew 6:32). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Treasures From Our Tradition By the early 1950s some scholars were calling for the restora on of Communion of the faith-ful on Good Friday, since by then only a priest received, consuming the host from the Holy Thursday repository. In 1955 the new Good Friday liturgy was med to begin at three o’clock everywhere, and included the op on of Holy Communion, but without the Precious Blood that had originally been part of the liturgy. Today, there is increasing debate among theologi-ans. Some feel that it would be be er to fast from the Eucharist on Good Friday, focusing on the mystery of the cross and highligh ng the Easter Communion. Others say that this Com-munion infuses the sadness of the day with awareness of Christ’s victory. It is not a day of mourning, of course, and the Passion according to John grounds the liturgy in a sense of Christ’s victory over death and the triumph of the cross. The tradi on is rich and varied, and we are s ll in the early stages of recovering an ancient way of doing things.

Why do we call the day “good”? The English and Dutch languages share this name, and its origin stems from the name “God’s Friday.” The tradi onal name for the day in La n is Feria VI in Parasceve, which translates as “The Sixth Day of the Week of Prepara on.” Other lan-guages make do with “Holy Friday.” In another part of England, as in Denmark, the people used to call it “Long Friday,” a good descrip on for a quiet day without work and no chance for play or a good meal! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co..

RESPECT LIFE…. True "compassion" brings one to share the suffering of the other, not to eliminate the one whose suffering he cannot tolerate. -The Gospel of Life, 66 Reflec on. The word "compassion" comes from the La n words meaning "to suffer with". Love brings us closer to people, and when they are in pain, love wants to come closer s ll. Love gladly suffers for and with the one who is loved. The so-called "right to die" is really a clever disguise for the right to kill. Prayer. Lord, free us from the selfishness that wants to run away from the suffering of others. Instead, fill us with true compassion so that we may suffer with them.

LENTEN PENANCE: INTERNAL & INDIVIDUAL AND OUTWARD & SOCIAL

Disciplines of Lent: Prayer, Fas ng, Almsgiving

Prayer St. Francis de Sales:

All Chris ans need a half hour of prayer each day, except when they are busy… Then they need an hour.

Fr. Thomas Kea ng: The only way you can fail at prayer is…to not show up.

Sugges ons: Read scripture _____ minutes a day. Pray as a family before meals. Pray for one another’s needs. Par cipate more fully in Sunday Mass. Take a walk alone to quiet down and simply be in God’s presence Write a le er to God in your journal. Then let God “write” to you. Learn a prayer method: Lec o Divina, www.goodnews.ie/lec o.shtml; Centering Prayer,

Fast from watching TV. Spend this me with family members. Fast from snacks. Send the money saved to help the poor. Fast from new clothes and other consumer items. Give the money saved to a shelter help-

ing the homeless. Fast from _____ to become more aware of God and others. Fast from gossip. Write le ers to rela ves Visit the elderly, people who are homebound or in a nursing home, or prisoners Help a brother or sister, neighbor or friend. Give your me to find out more about people in our world who have special needs, such

as, people in Third World countries, the homeless, persons with AIDS, and so on. Talk with someone toward whom you feel prejudiced.
