As the term rolls on, it is lovely to get the feeling that the subzero mornings

are drawing to a close and a few warmer mornings are starting to come our

way. I was recently talking with Mr Jude, who still believes that Lenswood is

one of the coldest places on Earth. Even with our cold mornings, we’ve

managed to pack out another fortnight with high quality learning and experi-

ences for everyone. Check out a few highlights below.

Science Week:

All teaching staff worked together

to plan a high quality week of sci-

ence activities that enhanced

their delivery of the Australian

Curriculum. Activities for National

Science Week were held across

the country with

a theme re-

lating to inno-

vation to im-

prove sustaina-

bility of the

ocean. All stu-

dents were

able to partici-

pate in a range

of hands on activities throughout the week, which

culminated in a range of whole school activities

where students work with buddies from different classes.

Lego League:

Our Lego League team have had an outstanding start to their season. Our

dedicated parent coaches (Carey and Sara), have been very pleased with the

enthusiasm of the students as they are building and learning to code the

Lego Mindstorm Robots. This year the students will have to work together

to complete a series of tough challenges with their robots. In the lead up to

the November event, these students and the coaches will meet every Tues-

day evening to prepare. In addition to this there is a full day holiday work-

shop aimed at honing their skills and also a bit of a test run for the competi-

tion day. Talk about dedication from the volunteering parents and students.

Each Tuesday evening, I step into the library and am always blown away by

the collaboration and problem-solving that is taking place. Thanks again to

Carey and Sara for their support in driving this program.

cont’d… from the Principal, Jess Moroney

Kindy Disco Dance Party:

Without our own on-site kindy, we often feel as though we miss out on the richness that pre-school children

bring to a school. Hence, we have made a deliberate plan to include our surrounding kindys as often as we

can. This year we have engaged regularly with Lobethal Kindy and were excited to be able to host their twi-

light disco and dance party. A few of our senior students (Grace, Amaya and Laura) met with the kindy staff

to develop a plan to bring the ideas to life. They then went away and develop a range of craft activities that

could be completed by students here and at kindy to ensure everyone had ownership of the night. I think it

was safe to say that the staff and parents of kindy were blown away by the professionalism of our students

who supported Heidi from Dancify and the Lobethal Kindy staff to run an outstanding night. This was such a

success, that it looks to be an annual event from here on in.

Re-scheduled events:

You might have noticed that a range of other schools recently celebrated Book Week. The official Book

Week has been re-scheduled into early Term 4 and we had a discussion as a staff to decide when to host

ours. There were pros and cons to both options, but we decided to go with the official week in Term 4, so

we have access to the official resources, shortlisted books and hopefully a bit of warmer weather for our

parade. Rest assured, it will be going ahead, but you just have to wait until Term 4. The theme will be

‘Curious Creatures, wild minds’ so it might be a good chance to start talking with your child about how they

could create a costume to link to the theme.

We will also be hosting sports day in term 4, with the official date set to be Friday, 20 November. We are

doing our best to prepare and plan for a sports day with parents in attendance. However, this will be sub-

ject to change in line with COVID restrictions. Many schools have opted to host sports days without parents

in attendance, which will be our last resort option if required. We understand the importance of having par-

ents in attendance, so will do everything we can to plan a parent-friendly event.

Save the Date:

We will be hosting our visual arts extravaganza evening on Thursday 17 September here at school. For our

new families, this is a formal exhibition of the visual, digital and media arts that your child has been working

on throughout the year. We will also have a few special performances by the choir and band, highlighting

what an amazing arts program we have here. We are still working through the final details regarding hosting

the event and keeping in line with the Department COVID regulations. However, we anticipate a formal invi-

tation will be ready to go out towards the end of this week. We would hope that all students can attend the

evening to show off their amazing arts to their family members.

A reminder that the Friday after our extravaganza evening, 18 September, the school will be closed for a

School Closure Day, no students or staff on site.

Have a nice fortnight, Jess

Congratulations our August Aussie of the Month...

Congratulations Clair Thompson!! Clair is our August Aussie of the Month recipient. Clair demonstrates our school values in so many ways. She is a hard working and considerate student, is an excellent leader and will always support those around her. Clair is always ex-tremely resilient and reliable and is a student who puts herself out to be kind to others. She listens to and uses feedback to im-prove her learning. Clair is a student who sees when someone needs help and always volunteers. She is a great conversational-ist and can have a good ‘chat’. Well done!

Carey Hannaford for coming into our school and working with our students on a science exper-

iment to help identify local types of pollen. The students loved it.

Thank you to ...
