Our Philosophy
We are an open-door animal shelter and annually accept 2,500-3,200 lost, neglected, abused or surrendered animals from Lenoir County, NC. We do not limit intake based on health, temperament or age. This means that at any given time we have a combined in- shelter and in-foster dog population of 40-70 dogs and 50-75 cats. Each of these animals is treated with respect, kindness and com-passion throughout their stay. Staff and volunteers do their best to give each animal a second chance in a loving home.
The Five Freedoms
We believe in the Five Freedoms, created by the UK Farm Animal Welfare Council and adopted by reputable animal welfare organiza-tions world-wide.
1. Freedom from hunger or thirst
2. Freedom from discomfort by providing an appropriate environ-
ment including shelter and a comfortable resting area
3. Freedom from pain, injury or disease
4. Freedom to express (most) normal behavior by providing suffi-
cient space, proper facilities and company of the animal's own kind
5. Freedom from fear and distress by ensuring conditions and treat-
ment which avoid mental suffering
Our Need The Lenoir County animal shelter is nearly 40 years old and not conducive to properly and compassionately house animals while they wait for new homes. It’s inefficient to operate and maintain, cramped for animals and peo-ple, and does not contribute to the animals' health and well-being. As we learn more about best practices in animal care and shel-ter requirements become more strict, we’re finding it increasingly difficult to update the shelter enough to meet the animals’ needs. Thanks to support from our community and volunteers, the SPCA has patched, painted and decorated; upgraded existing kennels, added more kennels, and repaired the shelter as needed. We recently added a small puppy room to better comply with shelter standards. After reviewing options from qualified shelter architects, it’s simply no longer feasible to continue investing in a building which we do not own. We’re tired of understanding what the animals need and not being able to provide it. Let’s work together to build a more humane future for homeless animals.
Our Goal To raise $1,500,000 to build a new shelter which will ensure the safety, health and well-being of more homeless animals in our commu-nity while they wait for their second chance.
After several years of research & planning, the time has finally come. Let’s build a new shelter!
