LENNON, REV. HAYNES, was born Dec. 15, 1816; was deeply im-pressed with a desire to seek the Saviour at four years of age, but did not join a church till twenty-three; was baptized by Rev. Wm. Ayers, in June, 1839; began to preach in May, 1841, and was ordained in March, 1842, Rev. Wm. Ayers and Rev. Dwight Hayes forming the Presbytery. He has been the pastor of the Antioch church, in Robinson (Robeson) County, N. C., for thirty-eight years, and of several others nearly as long. He was moderator of the Cape Fear Association, the second largest in the State, from 1850 to 1878, with the exception of the sessions of 1864 and 1865 when he was absent on account of sickness. In

1870 he became general superintendent of missions in his Association, and has been eminently useful in developing a missionary spirit among the churches. He is still an active and effective minister.

LENNON MEMORIAL SERVICES

According to previous appointment, the memorial services of the late lamented

Rev. Haynes Lennon were held at his church, Cross Road, March 1st, 1896, in the

presence of about one thousand people composed of relatives, friends and admirers.

The Holy Spirit was manifestly present.

At 10:30 o'clock, after praise services conducted by Rev. T. J. Cobb,

eager listeners heard with peculiar interest the biographical sketch of the

venerable brother's life, delivered in his best style by Rev. E.W. Wooten.

At 11:15 a,m. the eulogy was pronounced in a masterly manner by Rev. J. A.

Smith, who, as a public speaker, is without peer in all this section.

A memorial collection amounting to $7.63 was taken for State Missions.

A nice "table dinner" was enjoyed, and then in the midst of a packed house

the remainder of the exercises took place, which consisted of a praise service

conducted by Rev. A.H. Porter.

The calling for and reading of letters from the churches which Bro. Lennon

had served as pastor and as missionary, accompanied with verbal statements by

members thereof, and the making of short talks by brethren J. F. Harrell, T. F.

Toon, E.W. Wooten, J, A. Smith, R. L. Byrd, A. M. Benton and A.H. Porter

were dispensed with.

Adjourned by singing "Blest be the tie that binds."

A, M. KELLEY, Clerk for Meeting.

According to Miss Mi.nnie Lennon of Lum!>crton, the Lennon family came to Old Bladen County, Uorth Carolina from Virginia and that they were of Scottish ancestcry. It is said that they came up the Cape Fear ltiver by boat, to what is now Elizabeth-town, North Carolina; _bringing with them all their belongings. In order to get their things to their land, they had to buy oxen to take them. There was no road so they·h~d to blaze a trail as they went, to what is now Lennon's Cross Roads in Columbus County.

John Lennon, our anccster, was one of the Lennons who came from Virginia·. lle ·was granted 640 ac];"es of land in Bladen County on March 8, 17l~3. He made his will. in Bladen County on October 13, 1757 in the Parish of St. irartins. John Lennon's wife, Ann Moore, was most probably related to the well-to-do Hoore family of the Cape Fear section. Their grandsons, Moore and Dannis, Jr. had a saw mill, which according to Yates Lennon of Wilmington, North Carolina, father of National Con-gressr.1an Alton Lennon, the first in the South. Yates Lennon said when he was a · boy he saw corn eround, lunbcr saued and rice beat out all at one time in this old saw mill building. Moor~ and Dannis Lennon, Jr. had the first houses made of lumber in their section of Bladen County, built from lu~ber sawed at their mill. !he old mill was built out of 10' x 10' and 12' and 12'. The Lcnnons grew mulberry trees for their silk worms to feed off and spun their own.silk.

Dennis Lennon, Jr. owed a toll bridge over the Big Swamp. Rev. Dannis Lennon, Jr. and Epenatus Griffin gave state and county a grant for the Baptist Churcn at Lennon's Croos Roads in January, 1838. John Moore Lennon, son of Rev. Dennis Lennon, Jr., gave the land for Galled Baptist Church, near Bladenboro,. North Carolina. George William Lennon, son of Rev. Dennis, organized the first Sunday School in Columbus County near Lennon's Cross Roads in 1839. After the public school law want into operation, Sunday School gradually dropped rending and writing.
