PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Whereabouts of ‘Orange Girl’ painting unknown
The original name of the Woman’s Club’s first library (June 1915) was called Myron E. Hard Memorial Library. It was changed in 1925 to the Vero Beach Public Library. The Woman’s Club received interesting pieces of artwork. One was donated by famous Paris-based artist Charles Augustus Lasar (1856-1936). His brother, Edward Lasar (1861-1934), lived in a log cabin that he built in 1931 on 53rd Avenue – and it still stands today. Edward was president of the Ornamental Iron Works of St. Louis. Sometimes, I have driven by a ranch or building with an ornate iron work at a gate or hanging on a wall. Is it possible that Lasar was the creator of those pieces of art? Edward had a reputation before he arrived in Vero Beach as the famous “Eddie,” a poker-playing cartoon character. The comic strip was created in 1918 by Jean Knott of St. Louis called “Penny Ante” or “Eddie and his Friends.”
They often played poker together and Edward was considered a poor player. His fellow players would make fun of him and make him “fetch the drinks.” In 1927, Edward Lasar donated a painting by his brother to the Woman’s Club called “Orange Girl.” It depicted the celebrated 17th century English actress Nell Gwyn as an orange vendor and was valued at $1,000.
It was stipulated in a letter to the city: “It is to hang only in the City Library or an Art Gallery in the City of Vero Beach and is never to be sold.” The painting hung over the mantel for many years. However, its whereabouts now is unknown. Edward was laying a foundation for a museum and art gallery for the city until he died in 1934.

Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for LeBron James to bring a long-awaited title to Cleveland:
• The former Albertsons grocery store on U.S. 1 in Vero Beach is expected to make the transition to a Walmart Neighborhood Market within the next year. The project still needs various approvals from the city before it becomes a reality. “They had to do a lot of things to bring the building up to code,” said Tim McGarry, the city’s planning and development director. “It was an old building, and it was vacant for a long time.” Albertsons closed in 2012. This will be the first Walmart Neighborhood in Indian River County. Neighborhood Markets are about one-fifth the size of a typical Walmart Supercenter. (There are two of those in the county.) Walmart now has about 700 Neighborhood Markets and 3,400 Supercenters.
The corporate giant has been aggressive in opening Neighborhood Markets to compete against traditional supermarkets. This market, which is expected to have a liquor store and pharmacy, will be less than a mile from two Publix stores. According to McGarry, the developers decided against installing gas pumps “at this time.” (Probably a good decision, as nearby there will be a new Cumberland Farms store and a new Wawa center open by the time the Neighborhood Market opens its doors.) Right now, the focus is working on access from U.S. 1. McGarry said the Neighborhood Market will share access with Sonic. “They will have to go to the Planning and Zoning Board for approval,” he said.• So, what’s happening with the former Press Journal building

across the street from the former Albertsons store? McGarry says he expects to receive a site plan for a proposed project within the next few weeks. What will it entail? A hotel and probably a conference center with some retail, he said. Sounds pretty ambitious, eh?• While we all expected the new Chick-fil-A on State Road 60 to be a big hit, I didn’t think there would be more than 10 cars in line at 3 p.m. on a weekday, as was the case last week.• I made a mistake in last week’s “Meet me at Table 51” feature on Todd Howder. I mistakenly said the Blue Angels were “the pride of the Air Force.” Of course, they are the pride of the Navy. My apologies for the error. At least now I know people read the “Meet me at Table 51” features! I received more emails and calls about the mistake than anything I’ve written for Lemmon Lines.• Last week’s fatal crash of a Blue Angels jet while preparing
for a show in Tennessee sent shock waves all the way to Vero Beach, which is preparing for its big June 25-26 air show that has the Blue Angels as the featured attraction. Local news outlets will have the latest information about the Vero Beach Air Show and whether the fatal crash will affect it.• In last week’s issue, I wrote about the county landfill, saying it could qualify as a topographical feature on a map, as it’s believed to be the highest point in Indian River County. It’s currently about 177 feet high. We’re not alone. According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, the highest spot is Volusia County is the north cell of the landfill. It’s now about 145 feet above sea level; the permitted height is 192 feet.• Gotta love Property Appraiser David Nolte’s “vintage”-looking campaign signs. The signs really are as old as they look – he originally used them back in the 1980s!

Meet me at Table 51
Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what is a regular feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.
Alligators are usually the stars of the show on the airboat tours in the Blue Cypress Recreation Area. If you take Capt. Bob’s Airboat Adventures, you’re likely to see more than just one or two. “On a good tour, you’re going to see a dozen-plus,” said Capt. Bob Montuoro, who has been giving one-hour tours on what locals call “Lake Garcia” for more than 12 years. His 12-seat airboat navigates the former Garcia Ranch, which now is under water (6 to 7 feet in most places). “I do this for fun,” he said during our conversation at C.J. Cannon’s. “It’s really, really enjoyable.” Bob spent 31 years with Fire Rescue – working from
Aug. 1, 1981 to July 31, 2012. He retired as a Lieutenant EMT. His schedule with Fire Rescue – work 24 straight hours, then off for 48 hours – allowed him to start giving airboat tours before he retired. He received his captain’s license in 1994 and started his airboat business in late 2003. Capt. Bob’s was the first in Indian River County to
use aviation-style headsets on airboat tours. “They give you a chance to see everything quicker,” he said of the headsets. On his fully narrated tour, he explains the history of the area and talks about the birds, plants, fish and, of course, alligators they come across. Bob, 58, recently crossed off a big item on his “bucket list” – he and his wife of 28 years, Lisa, took a combo cruise/land tour of Alaska. A trip to Italy is now at the top of his list.
