Fume Hood SeriesWhat makes LEM and the E-Series line of fume hoods different? With all of the hood choices available today I get asked this question frequently. All hoods must be ASHRAE and UL-1805 certified just to be considered for a laboratory. So what makes our hood different? The simple things. The things that someone should have done years ago. Things like, including light bulbs with the hood and being able to change the bulbs easily from inside the hood. A standard round 10 duct collar to easily match up to most existing duct work. Easy- to-remove access panels for service and cleaning and a knock down capability to meet the growing need for flexibility in the lab of the future. This new catalog features a unique new product to meet the needs of the high performance or low velocity hoods. What makes this hood different from the competition is that it will fit on a standard cabinet and is 30 deep. This can save hundreds of square feet in large university projects and lower air flow requirements saves thousands of operational dollars to the institution utilizing the E-Series HP hood. In addition, you can now visit www.myfumehood.com to build your own fume hood, complete with quotes and shop drawings on standard products 24/7 . We are excited here at Laboratory Equipment Manufacturers, and we see a future filled with tremendous opportunity and keen competition. We are ready for the challenges that lie ahead and look forward to helping you with your fume hood requirements. Cordially,

How a Fume Hood WorksThe fume hood is an important safety device in any laboratory. At Laboratory Equipment Manufacturers, we believe that the more you understand about how a fume hood operates, the easier it will be to choose the right one for your application. There are many variables involved in exhausting the fumes that are generated inside the fume hood. First, there must be an adequate pull of air, known as face velocity, from the hood through the ductwork. Face velocity is measured in feet per minute (FPM) at the vertical sash plane. In order to maintain consistent face velocity, a certain quantity of air, or exhaust volume, is required. Exhaust volume is measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM). Sash position also affects face velocity. The sash is a transparent, movable panel of safety glass, which is set in the fume hood face. It provides access to the hood interior during set-up procedures and minimizes contact with dangerous fumes when the hood is being operated with the sash lowered. Airflow patterns into the hood are influenced by the airfoil. Located just beneath the sash, the airfoil decreases turbulence of the air entering the hood.

Sash Positions

Baffle PositionsLocated across the inside rear of the hood, the baffle controls airflow patterns through the hood. Baffle panels are located in a position determined to be most effective for the application. LEM fume hoods are constructed and tested with safety and simplicity in mind. That is why the baffles are nonadjustable and fixed. The hoods have been tested for both heavier and lighter than air applications. This eliminates the potential risk caused by having to adjust baffles depending on the application, which allows for a greater degree of safety compared with hoods that use adjustable baffles, for two reasons: First, the researcher doesnt need to know the baffle position required for the experiment; and, second, doesnt need to know the chemical characteristics in order to feel confident that the hood will safely contain the effluents being used. The E-Series HP: High Performance, Low VelocityThe choice for retrofit! The HP/LV is the choice for replacing old, inefficient hoods because it fits on a standard hood footprint and is not extra deep like most HP style hoods today. Unique hood design and flush mount airfoil provide exceptional containment at lower face velocity and volume (CFMs)The E-Series HP is an airfoil-type hood with a 45-degree angle around the fascia to allow smoother airflow across the fascia. This results in minimized air turbulence and increased safety and performance of the hood. The superstructure is designed to remove all fumes, both those heavier and lighter than air. Baffle positions are fixed for both safety and consistent and complete containment of fumes at all sash positions. The interior of the hood is lined with a UL-certified poly resin board. The exterior is fabricated of cold rolled steel and finished with acid wash and powder coat. The solid frame galvanized steel construction provides both stability and convenient knock-down ability to improve flexibility. Posts are 5 (127 mm) wide. Easy-to-remove interior access panels allow for easier maintenance and operation.U.L. 1805 Classified(continued on page 9)

Flush mount airfoil and integrated worksurface achieve a smoother flow of air and better containment. The profile and isometric view of the airfoil and worksurface are shown here. It also incorporates an integrated spill trough to catch inadvertant spills and enhance technician safety. All of this is accomplished at 60 FPM with standard depth(30)countertops. This allows for significant initial cost savings as well as operational savings year after year.

The E3-Series: Slim LineA thin wall design with expanded workspace and wider openingsThe E3-Series is a thin wall hood with slimmer front posts to expand workspace. The superstructure is designed to remove all fumes, both those heavier and lighter than air. Baffle positions are fixed for both safety and consistent and complete containment of fumes at all sash positions. The interior of the hood is lined with a UL certified poly resin board. The exterior is fabricated of cold rolled steel and finished with acid wash and powder coat epoxy paint. The solid frame galvanized steel construction provides both stability and convenient knock down ability to improve flexibility. Posts are 2 12 (64 mm) wide. T-8 fluorescent lights and bulbs are included standard. A round 12 standard duct collar is included to easily match up to most existing ductwork without costly additional transition pieces. The standard vertical sliding sash features a full-length finger lift. The sash panels are 7/32 safety glass. The sash counterbalance is a single weight at the rear of the hood, attached with a 7 x 7 aircraft-type nylon coated cable. The .125 diameter cable rides on quiet and corrosion resistant nylon and stainless steel ball bearing pulleys. Because the slimmer posts remove the option for wiring and plumbing in the posts, plumbing services must be deck mounted on cabinet; and electrical services must be mounted on the face of the cabinet. (See cabinet options on page 34.) LEM E3 hoods include standard equipment. Standard sizes are 36-96 with custom sizes available upon request.

The E4-Series: Floor Mounted HoodAn aerodynamic floor mounted design for those tall jobsThe E4-Series, with a double-hung sash configuration and 72 high opening, is designed to accommodate a large apparatus application, up to 93 inches in height. This hood features a 45-degree fascia on three sides to allow a smoother flow of air across the fascia. This results in minimized air turbulence and increased safety and performance of the hood. The superstructure is designed to remove all fumes, both those heavier and lighter than air. Baffle positions are fixed for both safety and consistent and complete containment of fumes at all sash positions. The interior of the hood is lined with a UL certified poly resin board. The exterior is fabricated of cold rolled steel and finished with acid wash and powder coat epoxy paint. The solid frame galvanized steel construction provides both stability and convenient knock down ability to improve flexibility. Posts are 5 (127 mm) wide. Easy-to-remove interior access panels allow for easier maintenance and operation. T-8 fluorescent lights and bulbs are included standard. A round 12 standard duct collar is included to easily match up to most existing ductwork without costly additional transition pieces. The standard vertical sliding sash features a full-length finger lift. The sash panels are 7/32 safety glass. Each sash is counterbalanced by a single weight at the rear of the hood, attached with a 7 x 7 plastic coated aircraft-type nylon coated cable. The .125 diameter cable rides on quiet and corrosion resistant nylon and stainless steel ball bearing pulleys. LEM E4 hoods include standard equipment as listed and as an option may be shipped pre-wired and pre-plumbed. (See Optional Accessories next page). Face Velocity, Exhaust Volume and Static PressureFace velocity, exhaust volume and static pressure are critical parameters in hood performance, functioning in unison with the rooms HVAC design

DETERMINING EXHAUST VOLUMEIn order to calculate exhaust volume, you must know your hood type and size as well as the number of air changes per hour for the lab. (Consult with your HVAC professional or mechanical engineer.) To determine the quantity of room air available for fume hood exhaust (in CFM), use the following equation: Exhaust volume (CFM) Room size (cubic feet)

DEFINITIONSFace Velocity: The adequate draw of air from the operator, through the hood, to the ductwork. Face velocity is measured in feet per minute (FPM) at the sash. To maintain consistent face velocity, a certain exhaust volume is required.

Exhaust Volume: The amount of cubic feet per minute (CFM) required to maintain the desired constant face velocity. Static Pressure: Air pressure, or resistance, in a fume hood or duct, expressed in inches of water. Fume hoods operate more efficiently and with less noise at lower static pressure levels. The static pressure rating of your hood is very important to correct sizing of the blower system, and should be provided to the HVAC contractor to ensure a properly sized exhaust system. The appropriate face velocity will vary depending on usage of the fume hood and the way in which the hood has been set up. There are several published guidelines that indicate general ranges for face velocity settings. The published face velocity guidelines may or may not apply to your application and/or the hood you select.

Published Face Velocity GuidelinesOrganization OSHA ACGIH ANSI/AIHA NFPA SEFA Reference 29 CFR & 1910 Industrial Ventilation Manual 23rd Edition Z9.5 NFPA 45, 6-4 SEFA LF-1996, 5.2 Face Velocity 60-100 FPM 60-100 FPM 80-120 FPM 80-120 FPM 75-125 FPM

=

x

[room changes per hour/60]

To determine exhaust volume for a particular fume hood, use the following equation: Exhaust volume (CFM) Face Velocity (FPM)

Face velocity can also be affected by sash position. As the sash is closed and the opening reduced, airflow face velocity increases at a constant CFM. The opposite is true as the sash is moved to the full open position. Likewise, a lower CFM can achieve the same face velocity for a sash located in a lower position than a sash in a higher position. This position can be locked in place by the use of a sash stop, available as an optional accessory. Another way that airflow can be enhanced is through the use of different sash configurations, thereby reducing the total CFMs required and saving operational costs for the facility. These sash stops and sash configurations can help to achieve low velocity air patterns at significant savings to the facility manager. Air Foil: The stainless steel airfoil is placed just below the sash on top of the work surface. The purpose of the airfoil is to reduce the turbulence of air entering the hood thereby ensuring a smooth flow of air across the work surface to the exhaust system. Exhaust volume requirements are affected by hood type, the number of air changes required per lab as well as hood usage. The definitions provided are meant to be helpful as guidelines but are not intended to replace consultation with your lab planner, HVAC professional or mechanical engineer. Final exhaust volume and face velocity determinations are to be made in conjunction with your HVAC professionals.

Duct & Blower Configurations

Individual SystemThis configuration is the simplest approach to exhausting a fume hood and can be used with one or more fume hoods. Installation and material costs are higher with individual blower systems, but they are easier to balance and the failure of one blower will not affect use of remaining hoods. Although LEM can provide the blowers specifically made for fume hood applications, ductwork and plenum systems are typically bid and installed as part of the mechanical portion of the building contract.

Manifold SystemManifold systems are popular in many settings where multiple fume hoods are in use. Each hood is exhausted into the exhaust duct plenum and removed by a single, centralized blower. Because multiple hoods share a common blower and ductwork, manifold systems often cost less to install than individual systems. The HVAC professional is challenged, however, to insure that adequate makeup air is available for each hood, regardless of the number of hoods in operation at any given time, and that the total room HVAC system is properly balanced. A backup blower is advisable so that, in the event of a failure of the primary blower, all fume hoods will not be disabled at once. Although LEM can provide the blowers specifically made for fume hood applications, ductwork and plenum systems are typically bid and installed as part of the mechanical portion of the building contract. IMPORTANT: Perchloric acid hoods should ONLY be used with an individual system. Both individual and manifold configurations can be designed for either constant volume or variable air volume (VAV) systems.
