Leidenkey to discovery!

Leiden is famous for its almshouses, canals, university, museums and glorious history. The city is definitely worth seeing. It is the place where Rembrandt van Rijn was born and inspired so many other influential painters. In 2019 Leiden honoured his legacy, by commemorating the anniversary of his death 350 years ago. The festivities attracted over 600.000 visitors to Leiden. Next year Leiden will commemorate 400 years since the Pilgrims left Leiden on the Mayflower. Leiden will also be buzzing in 2020!

Leiden Universitythe oldest university of the Netherlands!

In 1575, Leiden became the first city in the northern Netherlands to have a university. Leiden University celebrates 445 years of university history in 2020. Legend has it that the university was a reward for the heroic resistance to the Spanish occupation. Leiden became an inspirational venue and attracted scientists

from all over Europe - embracing the motto of Leiden University: Libertatis Praesidium – Bastion of Freedom. Leiden University received brilliant scholars like Descartes, Spinoza and Christiaan Huygens. Famous students from Rembrandt van Rijn to the Dutch King Willem Alexander and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte were educated here.

Rembrandt van Rijna famous Leiden student

The university has seven academic faculties and over fifty subject departments, while housing more than 40 national and international research institutes. Its historic primary campus, scattered across the college town of Leiden, is considered among the most beautiful in Europe. Leiden University housed twenty-one Spinoza Prize Laureates and sixteen Nobel Laureates, including Albert Einstein and Kamerlingh Onnes.

World class Astronomyat Leiden Observatory

Astronomy has a long and rich tradition in Leiden. Leiden Observatory, established in 1633, is the oldest remaining university observatory in the world. Its mission is to carry out world-class astronomy research: Are there other planets like the Earth out there? How do galaxies form? Why are there supermassive black holes? What is dark energy and dark matter? It has a strong education and PhD program, develops key technologies for ground-breaking astronomical discoveries, and informs the general public of exciting results and the beauty of the Universe. The Observatory has access to first-class ground and space-based observational facilities around the world, hosts in-house optical and astrochemical laboratories, and has built dedicated large-scale multi-processing computing facilities. Many prestigious awards were bestowed on Leiden Observatory’s scientists. Last year, Ewine van Dishoeck, received the Kavli Prize by King Harald V of Norway for her leadership in the field of astrochemistry and Anthony Brown, for his work on Gaia, was put on the list of the ten people who mattered in science in 2018 by the scientific journal Nature.

NOVA is the alliance of the astronomical institutes of the universities of Amsterdam, Groningen, Leiden, and Nijmegen. NOVA’s mission is to carry out frontline astronomical research in the Netherlands. Leiden Observatory hosts the NOVA office.

South Hollandecosystem of space researchand space travel

Leiden lies in the heart of the South Holland Provice and has a unique ecosystem in the field of space travel and space research. 80% of Dutch Aerospace industry is located in the Province of South Holland. More than 4000 people are employed by the Aerospace industry, from ESTEC to Airbus Defence & Space. The universities of Leiden and Delft educate 4000 students in aerospace sciences. The world class standard in Aerospace will reach a new level when SRON, the Netherlands Institute for Space Research relocates to Leiden Bioscience Park in 2021.

There is no better place than Leiden for hosting the EAS Annual Meeting in 2020 in Leiden. We hope to welcome you at the Holiday Inn Event and Convention Centre and encourage you to contribute to this event, which will attract over 1200 visiting scientists in astronomy.
