Updating Firmware on the Leica Viva GS10/14/15
Please follow the steps to update firmware on a Leica Viva GS10, GS14 and GS15 GNSS Receiver Base/Rover.
Before you begin, you will need the following tools to complete the firmware update on your GS controller:
Leica CS10 or CS15 field controller
Leica GS10, GS14 or GS15 GNSS sensor
Leica Data Cable GEV234, Lemo to USB
Leica SD Card (GS10/15), Leica Micro SD Card (GS14)
(2) Fully Charged Leica Li-Ion Batteries (GEB212 for CS, GS14 & GS15; GEB221 for GS10)
Up-to-date Leica Customer Care Package (CCP)
Leica GS Firmware data file (available from Leica MyWorld, or through Spatial Technologies Technical
Support

Before you begin the firmware update, ensure that your Leica Customer Care Package (CCP) is up-to-date. If your CCP
has expired your Viva system may not allow you to upgrade your current firmware. Log on to your Leica MyWorld
account (https://myworld.leica-geosystems.com) and add your product to your MyProducts list, if you have not already.
In the details of the product, in the Overview tab, you will be able to verify if your CCP is up-to-date. If it is not, please
contact our office right away.

Leica SmartWorx Viva firmware files are available at Leica MyWorld by accessing the SOFTWARE tab under the details of
your Leica product.
NOTE: If you do not have access to Leica MyWorld, contact our support department, and they can supply you with the
latest firmware files. Our Support department can be reached by email: [email protected] or toll-free at (855)414-9453.

Once you have downloaded the GS firmware file you will need to install it into the System folder on your Leica SD card.
ONLY LEICA BRAND SD CARDS SHOULD BE USED FOR THIS PROCESS. Other brand cards may fail and damage your GS
sensor.
Simply copy the firmware file (file type .fw) to the System folder of the SD card.
Copy Firmware file (file suffix .fw) to the System
folder of your SD card.
Make sure that there is only 1 firmware file in the
SYSTEM folder. The firmware upload will not
proceed if there are more than one .fw files in the
SYSTEM folder.

Install SmartWorx Viva Firmware files
Eject the SD card from your computer and install the card into your GS 10/14/15 GNSS Receiver.
Make sure that the firmware of the CS Controller has been upgraded. If the firmware versions of the controller and
receiver do not match, you will receive the following warning:

From the main menu, press the Function Key (Fn) and select “EXIT”:
Connect the CS Controller (USB Connection) to the GS Receiver (P1) using the instrument cable type GEV234:

Double click the ”Webserver (Cable)” option:
Select “USER” to continue:
Select USER
Note the currently installed firmware type on the device

Select “LOAD FIRMWARE.”
Check the box for “.fw file on GS SD Card (System Folder)” and click “+ Load new firmware” to install the firmware
update on the GS receiver.

Confirm the Firmware is updating.
NOTE: The process will take several minutes to complete. The GS sensor will power down and back up again
twice while the firmware installs. The screen will display a green panel stating that the install has completed, before
the actual installation has finished. After the green panel is displayed, allow the sensor to shut down and reboot
again before the installation is complete.

the GS sensor to reboot again AFTER the green
banner appears.

NOTE: REFRESH THE SCREEN TO VERIFY THAT THE FIRMWARE UPDATE HAS BEEN COMPLETED AND INSTALLED ON
YOUR SENSOR BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO SHUT ANYTHING DOWN OR DISCONNECT THE USB CABLE. THE GS SENSOR
WILL REBOOT AGAIN AFTER THE DISPLAY STATES THAT THE FIRMWARE HAS BEEN INSTALLED. PLEASE, BE SURE TO
ALLOW THE GS SENSOR TO REBOOT AGAIN AFTER YOU SEE THE ABOVE MESSAGE. The USER page of the Webserver
link will display the current version of Firmware on the sensor. Please verify that the installed version is the version
shown on the screen before ending the process. It is advised that the user close and re-boot Webserver to verify that
installation has completed successfully.
Your firmware is now installed and your GS instrument is now ready to use.

Make sure to update the MyWorld page for your instrument to reflect the new firmware version.
