“Using the Leica 3D Disto I have the exact data available from the measuring process to the on-site fitting. Things come full circle - I think that’s brilliant.”Sandro Malgiaritta, Project Manager Fried AG

The cabinet-making business Fried AG in Bever near St. Moritz processes approx. 150-200 cubic metres of wood annually, from Arolla pine or walnut to olive wood. Predominantly indigenous woods are used and as a contrast, some-times exotic types. The company has been managed by the second generation since 1991, with activity focussed on the completion of interiors, producing custom-made kitchens as well as doors and cupboards.

In a building, the vestibule was to be separated from the hallway by a door. The most important factor for hand-made doors is great

precision and the basis for this is always the measuring up. Nothing is more aggravating than a door which has been poorly measured up and which cannot subsequently be exactly fitted. The task of fitting becomes unnecessarily complicated and as a result, the quality of the craftsmanship suffers.

Measuring up was an easy task for the Leica 3D Disto. It was set up so that an automatic scan (every 2 cm) could be taken along the wall, over the corners to the asymmetric arch and along the opposite wall back to the floor, without any problems. The measurements required were taken within a period of approx. 2 minutes.

Back at the office the measured values were imported 1:1 into the computer as a DXF file, using a USB stick. The drawing for the door was then created in the

The rough material was cut to size, planed and chucked in the CNC milling machine. With this marvel of technology, any and every possible shape can be quickly precision milled and exactly reproduced (Patterns, designs, sections, ornamental pieces etc.). CNC means of course “computer-ized numerical control”. Following this process stage, the components are finished and ready to be assembled. Finally, the new door is installed with a precise fit on site.

The CNC machining centre mills the wood in 3 dimensions to a tolerance of just 0.003 millimetres. It weighs 2.5 tons.
