Montessori School of Northampton

For over 40 years the Montessori School of Northampton has

offered exciting and engaging programs for children in the

tradition of Italian educator Maria Montessori. The school is

located in a peaceful, residential area convenient to downtown

Northampton, Route 9 and I-91. Families often commute and

carpool from surrounding towns such as Hatfield, Amherst,

Williamsburg, Easthampton, Hadley, and the hilltowns.

The Montessori School of

Northampton is accredited by

the Association of Independent

Schools of New England

(AISNE) and the American

Montessori Socity (AMS).

Summer Programs at the Montessori School of Northampton

offer a wide range of enriching and fun sessions for toddler through middle school age

children. Our programs are inspired by the Montessori approach. The toddler and

preschool curriculum includes theme based programming, focused art classes, an

emphasis on practical life skills and extended outdoor exploration. Aspects of the

Montessori academic experience from which elementary and middle school

students will benefit include independent work choices, respect and care

for social relationships and advanced practical life skills.

Once you see what we have to offer for the summer, you may

want to look at our school year programs for the future.

For more information, please call Laura Frogameni,

Admissions Director, at 413-586-4538, ext. 103.

Our program has a low teacher to-child ratio so our staff can give lots of individualized attention and cre-

ate a relaxed summer pace for the children. Classrooms at the Montessori School of Northampton are

“prepared environments”: rich with activities that encourage independence. The children make their own

play choices from the many curriculum areas: reading, art, early practical life skill materials, etc. Your

child will join our skilled and inspired staff for fun in the sun, shade and water. Each two week session

features a resident artist who works with the children on theme-related projects. The program features

fun outdoor play in a park-like setting, wading pools, water play (PM only), and a large children’s play-

ground. We offer indoor fun in one of the best-equipped, most beautiful classroom environments in the

Pioneer Valley.

The Visual Arts program is a multi-media extravaganza taught by our resident

art teacher Barbara Neulinger. During this program students will learn unor-

thodox painting techniques and use unique mediums to express themselves.

Daily units will include:

Spray bottle watercolor and poured paint abstractions.

Group mural: imagery comes from students being traced, with an abstract

background added behind them. The mural will be cut and divided at the

end of the week for students to take home.

Outdoor shadow tracing on large paper; students not only trace them-

selves but the shadows cast by tree branches, playground structures, etc.

and paint the images in the art studio.

Painting using brushes and rollers attached to long dowels, creating bold

and large textures.

These varied techniques and media will help each student think “outside the

box” helping them realize art can be made with anything!

This week will be all about paint. We will work with various painting media in

both traditional and innovative ways. Projects will range from learning to blend

and layer with watercolor (as well as manipulate the paint through resist and

spatter methods), to abstract poured acrylic paint compositions. Students will

work with brushes, as well as non-traditional painting tools. They will touch on

working from observation as well as exploring what the intrinsic properties of

what paint can do.

Graphic novels and comic book storytelling are great vehicles for

young people to discover the writer within themselves. In one week,

students create their own illustrated narrative, telling a story with

words and pictures. While working toward

this goal, instructors introduce the idea of

storytelling through images (both as readers

and as creators), sequential art (which can

apply to picture books, comics, and film), the

concept of character as the defining force in

stories, and techniques for inventing and de-

veloping characters, exploring motivations

and relationships. The week will conclude

with students creating their own bound

graphic novel.

Rob Kimmel is an illustrator,

graphic designer and educator.

After years of working in Brooklyn

and teaching at Pratt Institute,

Rob’s studio is now in a

Northampton industrial building

combs. Born and raised in

Chicago, Rob worked in the

theater for several years and has

traveled extensively from North

Africa to South Asia. These varied

experiences flavor his approach to

writing. He also maintains a blog

focused on creative parenting,

wandermonster.com. He returns

for his third year leading this

program.

She is dedicated to empowering her

students to trust themselves and to respect

their diverse capabilities and has created

curriculum aligned with Montessori

philosophy that addresses social inequity

and justice. Tiffany has currently embarked

on perfecting her bread making skills and

now makes all the bread her family eats.

She loves cooking, especially anything that

requires a delicious mix of spices and is

looking forward to sharing her favorite recipes

and meals with 6-9 year olds this summer!
