Veteran’s Day Parade 11/11/11by Tom Lainson

We had several members participate in the pa-rade, Dennis Conte, Tom Lainson, Jeff Kuznier, Jerry Boren. Sam Deneault and Dan Hoffman set out to participate, but ran into technical difficulties with their C-2’s and had to return home. There were 108 Corvettes of all vintages in front of the parade behind the lead band, each with a vet-eran, mostly WWll I think. There was a flyby with the missing man formation and another had two “Zeros” with a P51 in chase. The crowds were terrific, yelling their thanks and support to the vets as we drove by. Many were saluting and there were flags every-where. It was a very fine day for all. Picture is my WWll Navy vet, James Chennault,

being thanked by Mrs. Collin County. James served at several invasions in a landing craft in the Pacific theatre. Yes, he is related to Claire Chennault, CO of the famed Flying Tigers in China.

R8C Delivery/NCM Xperience ReunionSeptember 25 – 30, 2011

I was looking at the NCM website last February and saw the ad for the R8C Museum Delivery Xperi-ence (R8C Option). Marty and I decided to “go for it” and signed up. The tour would take place in California from Burlingame, south along Route 1 Pacific Coast Highway to Buellton, CA. With our first Corvette in hand, Marty and I de-cided to put our 2011 Grand Sport Convertible and ourselves to the test. As most of you know convert-ibles do not have a lot of luggage room with the top down. First challenge to relearning how to pack, was to convince Marty she did not require eight pair of shoes. But with trial and error we stuffed every nook and cranny with a must-have necessity. We were to meet up with the other participants on Sunday, September 25 at the Holiday Inn Express in Burlingame which is just across the bay from San Francisco. To allow adequate time to arrive in Burlin-game we decided to leave home on Wed., Sept. 21. Our route was divided into 3 days of 8-9 hours of driv-ing with stops every 2-2 1/2 hours due to the blood clot in Marty’s leg. Our first night was spent in Roswell, NM. Living up to the rumors there are Aliens there, I was abduct-ed and given lessons in the operation of a UFO and issued an UFO Operators License to Fly, (they in-formed me that my Grand Sport qualified). On Thurs., Sept. 22 we visited the Museum then departed Alien Territory and with a license to fly we grabbed a worm-hole to Flagstaff, AZ. Friday we departed Flagstaff for Bakersfield, CA. Marty and I have not driven much west of Fort Worth; most of our experience traveling has been viewing the U.S. from 30,000 ft. I do not know what we ex-pected to see from ground level but we decided that upon toping some of the knolls and looking out over the flat country side we could see the curve of the earth. We both had to admit, in its own way, there was a beauty to it. We drove a little past Bakersfield on Route 99 and stayed overnight in a little town called Tulare, where we discovered a great restaurant called Cool Hand Luke’s, 1470 Cherry Ct., (559) 686-0825 The next morning we drove to Tracy, CA where we would spend the night with Bill and Mary Kaska,

friends we met 16 years ago at Hot August Nights in Reno, NV. They are avid Corvette enthusiasts and have four Corvettes; ‘78 Indy Pace Car, ‘88 35th Anniversary, ‘92 Coupe and a ‘95 Coupe. They also have two ‘57 Chevrolets. They belong to the Glass Pack Club and the Central Corvette Club of Califor-nia that sponsored dinner on Monday night at Baja Cantina in Carmel. They were having a Garage Sale when we arrived so we pitched in and helped. Bill sold his 57 Chevy Pickup during the Garage Sale, says he has room for another Corvette now. Sunday, Sept. 25th we left Bill & Mary’s to join up with the other participants in the R8C NCM Xperi-ence in Burlingame. There was a Meet and Greet Pizza Party, where we had introductions and were given our credentials and package. There were 35 cars and 70 participants in attendance. Also in atten-dance were Gary Cockriel, Delivery Manager, NCM Bowling Green, KY and Buzz Marston, Chairman of the NCM Board. They were our activities directors and baby sitters. Much credit and thanks must also go to Karen Renfro, NCM Events Associate in putting together the event schedule. Monday, Sept. 26, after a continental breakfast at the hotel we had our daily morning drivers meeting.

Mendenhall Museum in Buellton, CA

First stop “The Candy Store”, located in Burlingame in an elegant Spanish style building designed in 1928 as a Packard Dealership for Earl C. Anthony. It was started in 1979 by Bob Cole and the late Russell Head as a place for Gear Heads to kibitz and work on their cars. Many of the auto-mobiles participate in the competition at the Pebble Beach Concourse d’Elegance and/or the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance. To place your car in the Can-dy Store you must join the club and your car must be accepted for entry. Lunch was in Monterrey Bay at the Fish Hopper Restaurant followed by an afternoon at the Monterrey Bay Aquarium. Then on to the Embassy Suites in Seaside, CA and dinner with the Central California Corvette Club at Baja Cantina in Carmel. Tuesday, Sept. 27th, was a trip to Vision Quest Ranch in Salinas; CA. Vision Quest is a training facility and rest home for exotic and domestic animals. These animals are used in advertising, movies and photos. They also take in aged or animals that have out grown their owner’s capabilities of caring for them. Marty overcame her fears and fed one of the elephants some carrots. She described it like holding a large slimy noodle. Afterwards we took an optional tour of Scenic 17 Mile Drive which included Pebble Beach Golf Course. Wednesday, Sept. 28th, continuing on Pacific Coast Hwy. to Point Lobos State Park and China Beach to Cambria. Cambria is a small town just south of San Simeon with antique shops and restaurants. Thursday, Sept. 29th, was a tour of Hearst Castle in San Simeon. The Castle was built by William Ran-dolph Hearst and designed by San Francisco Architect Julia Morgan. The “Castle” consists of 115 rooms, took 27 years to build and is really not complete by Mr. Hearst’s dreams. We traveled on to Jim Wafer’s for lunch and a tour of his auto restoration buildings which turned out to be aircraft hangers located at the San Ynez Airport. After lunch it was off to Solvang for shopping. We were invited to visit the Mendenhall Museum in Buellton, CA, a private collection started over 50 years ago by the late Jack Mendenhall. The collection is carried on today by his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Vickie. It has one of the west coast

largest collections of Petrofina, consisting of gasoline pumps, globes, and porcelain gas, oil and road signs. There are also race cars, racing memorabilia, license plates, gas and oil items and other miscellaneous antiques. The Museum is also home of the Dry Lakes Racing Hall of Fame. We were served a cooked-on-the-spot buffet of tri-tip steak dinner with all trim-mings. Friday, Sept. 30th, was time to say goodbye and head home. Our route home took us to Las Vegas, NV (donations were made), then on to Grand Junc-tion, CO, Steamboat Springs and lunch with some friends then to Denver to visit relatives. Our trip clocked 5574 miles; both Marty and I agreed that the Grand Sport was the most comfort-able vehicle we have traveled in. We also discovered we could spend Quality Time in confined quarters without getting a divorce. We were both amazed at the beauty and vastness of this great country. We did have to make some minor adjustments on the lug-gage and send a few items home via postal express after the third day. PS: For those who purchase tickets from NCM don’t give up. A couple with us just took delivery at the museum of a 2011 Cyber Gray ZR1.

A few months ago in May, 2011 about 30 of America’s surviv-ing astronauts trav-eled to Cocoa Beach, Florida. They came to participate in a pa-rade commemorating the 50th anniversary of Alan Shepard’s historic sub-orbital flight on May 5, 1961. Each astronaut rode in a Corvette that was built in the time period of their mission. All C1 through C6 gen-erations of Corvettes were used. It was fitting that the Corvette was used exclusively for the astronauts, as a Corvette played a big part in the lives of many of them. From the beginning in 1959 Alan Shepard commuted to the space-training program in his 1957 Corvette. It was the car of choice for the astronauts. All of the astronauts were test pilots back then, living life on the edge. In 1959 newly- formed NASA invited 110 top test pilots to volunteer for the manned space flight program. Of the original 110 only 7 were chosen for Project Mercury. What else would someone who flew performance aircraft be driving but the ultimate American performance car. Six of the seven Mercury astronauts were Cor-vette owners. Four of those astronauts were members of the Cape Kennedy Corvette Club when it was founded in 1967. As the first American in space, Alan Shepard was a national hero upon his return to earth.

Adults and children idol-ized him. Seeing this as a marketing opportunity, GM’s Ed Cole presented him with a new 1962 Corvette with a special “space-age” custom interior (COPO car). It was a gift for his service to his country. Shepard, who died of Leukemia in 1998, is said to have owned at least 10 Cor-vettes during his lifetime. In 1960 Jim Rathmann won the Indianapolis 500 race and soon afterwards opened a Chevrolet-Cadillac deal-ership in Florida near the space center. Sens-ing the astronauts were Corvette type persons, Rathmann arranged a

“special” lease agreement with General Motors to put the Mercury 7 rocket men into new Corvettes. All except John Glenn, who was a family main, chose a Corvette. John Glenn chose a station wagon. The leased vehicles became known as “dollar” cars. Except for Alan Shepard, no astronaut was given a Corvette or any other car. It had nothing to do with GM policy. NASA ruled after the gift to Shepard that

astronauts were no longer permitted to ac-cept gifts or do endorse-ments. So... they could lease cars, but not ex-cept them as gifts. The $1.00 Astronaut Leasing Program was born. For the cost of $1.00 per year astronauts could lease the vehicle of their choice and most chose the Corvette. Actually, they were allowed to lease two vehicles. Most chose one family vehicle and one Corvette. In

addition, they were given the option to purchase the vehicles at a “used” price after they had been driven 3,000 miles. The program ended in 1971 as the moon landings came to a close. Public complaints about the program may have helped lead to its ending. Gus Grissom, the second American in space, loved his Corvette, but hated losing drag races to his fellow astronauts. In the fall of 1966 he and Alan Shepard took delivery of identical 1967 427/435 Corvette convertibles. Grissom arranged to have Rathmann Chevrolet/Cadillac do a few modifications. They widened the rear wheel openings slightly to al-low clearance for the larger tires they fitted, and also installed a 4:56 gear in it. Grissom beat Shepard in almost every race as a result. We may never know if Shepard ever found out about the modifications. Only three or four months after acquiring the ‘67 Corvette, Gus Grissom died in the Apollo 1 fire on the launch pad along with friends and fellow astronauts Roger

Chaffee and Edward White. After his death, his wife returned the Corvette to the Rathmann dealership. It surfaced in 2007 and was offered at the Russo and Steele Auction in Scottsdale. It was sold to an Ari-zona car collector for $275,000. Apollo 12 mission astronauts Pete Conrad, Al Bean and Dick Gordon were good friends and remained so even after their NASA days. The trio de-cided to order identical 1969 Corvette coupes in Riv-erside Gold. All three were equipped with 427/390 engines and air conditioning. A special paint scheme of black “wings” was applied over the gold finish and red, white and blue logos were added to the front fenders. Jim Rathmann added the white border between the black and gold paint. Then, the initials of each person’s position on the Apollo 12 team was added. Pete Conrad had “CDR” for Commander, Dick Gordon had “CMP” for Command Module Pilot, and Al Bean had “LMP” for Lunar Module Pilot.

Editor’s note: This museum at the State Fair of Texas has many nice cars. Seeing the info card posted with this race car

mention the GM/Astronaut connection was very inter-esting and led to finding the previous article. Note the discrepency about the gift/lease issue. Astronaut Alan Sheperd was a Corvette man. His first Corvette, a ‘53, was purchased from his father-in-law in 1954 for $1,500. He bought a second Corvette, a 1957, in 1959. Shepard developed a relationship with Zora Arkus-Duntov which led to invitations to drive pre-production models. The ongoing friendship led to Duntov’s efforts to have GM give Shepherd a new Corvette. “At first I met with some resistance,” Dun-tov said, “I was able to offer him a Corvette engine, but before I could deliver it to him, GM agreed to give him a whole car.” A 1962 Corvette with white exterior was selected. Being a Corvette “insider” Shepherd saw the 1963 Sting Ray body style and had his eyes on these as well. The car you see here, a white ‘65 Roadster, was given to Alan by Chevrolet through Jim Rath-man Chevrolet in Melbourne, Florida. The deal was arranged by Zora Duntov. He later received a 1968 Corvette, also in white. This became a standard practice that Chevrolet adopted for each of the astronauts and is the reason so many Corvettes were featured in the movie, “The

Right Stuff”. Sheperd walked on the moon in Febru-ary of 1971. The astronauts were fond of racing each other in their Vettes on public roads near Cape Canaveral and Sheperd took that racing to a higher level by competing in some organized race events. This car was turned into a B Production class car for use in SCCA club races. It features a 327 cubic inch engine with cam and Holley carburetor, headers, fire sys-tem, fuel cell and the rest of the required competition equipment. It uses a Muncie 4-speed and stiffened suspension. It has been signed by Dick Thompson, Dick Guilstrand and several others. It has been displayed in the Corvette museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky and now in the Texas Museum of Automo-tive History. The car is currently available for sale. Owned by Jeff Howle.
