Funded by the Merseyside Local Authorities and Merseytravel, we aim to make it easier for everyone to make journeys without a car. Most people are already TravelWise for all or many of their journeys, but the number of trips being made by car in Merseyside is rising rapidly, meaning car travel is getting slower. If we want to avoid the congestion and pollution seen in other big cities we all need to think about the best way of making each journey. We have lots of options in Merseyside, trying them out is a wise move for us and our future. This leaflet shows how cycling is a wiser way to travel and get around Speke more easily by bike. www.LetsTravelWise.org Telephone: 0151 330 1253 Cycle Speke Getting around Speke on your bike Welcome to your Cycle Speke guide This guide has been produced by Liverpool City Council with input from the local community. There are many reasons for cycling, and many different journey purposes for making that journey by bike. Whatever your reason might be, we want you to cycle - and to cycle more. Cycling is simply great fun everyone can enjoy! By getting on your bike more often, you can get fitter, get to where you need to be on time and for free, and find out what’s in Speke. Cycling makes the city a more fun, open and exciting place to be. That’s what we want for Speke – and why we’ve launched Cycle Speke. The map shows you the suggested cycle routes around Speke and the facilities within easy cycling distance. You may find you have alternative suggested routes shown, in which case you could just try them both! What can you see in Speke? Whether you are interested in history, culture or shopping you will find lots of places within easy cycling distance. This variety gives you the wonderful freedom of choosing exactly the experience you are looking for. Speke is known for Speke Hall which is considered to be one of the most outstanding examples of timber-framed Tudor buildings in Britain. Set in delightful gardens and woodlands with spectacular views of the Mersey, Speke Hall, Garden and Estate is managed by the National Trust. Get there on your bike and you will get discounted entry. Speke Garston Coastal Reserve. A local nature reserve with wildflower meadows and panoramic views of the Mersey. The site is also a great place to enjoy watersports at the Liverpool Sailing Club. Mill Wood is one of a few ancient woodlands in Merseyside, making it one of the most unique and valuable woods in the region. Mill Wood contains many wildflowers and wildlife species, uniquely associated with ancient woodland and open wildflower meadows. Speke is also known for Mersey Wave on Speke Boulevard and the Yellow Submarine at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. The New Mersey Retail Park has high street outlets for clothes, books, electrical goods, sports, d.i.y. and food. There is also a cashpoint facility on site. The new district centre on Speke Boulevard also offers a wide range of shops. Attractions close by include: Calderstones Park. A recognised botanical garden. Call the rangers for information on events and activities. 0151 225 5910. Via Hunts Cross and Woolton to Allerton. Catalyst. A hands-on family fun museum where science and technology come alive. Come and find out about the industries which exported their wares via the region’s canals. Via Hale and Halebank to Mersey Road, Widnes. 0151 420 1121. Fiddler’s Ferry. A popular riverside location where you can watch the tide turn. Via Hale, Halebank and Widnes to Warrington. Hale Beach and Lighthouse. Breezy walks with views to Helsby Hill and the Clwyd range in North Wales. Pubs and shops in Hale Village. Halewood Country Park. Take a picnic to one of Merseyside’s few remaining areas of native woodland, together with pools and meadows. Offers walkers and cyclists a network of footpaths and bridleways following the Liverpool Loop Line. 0151 488 6151. Pickerings Pasture. A local nature reserve with wildflower meadows and panoramic views of the Estuary. Call the rangers for information on events and activities. 0151 425 4706. Via Hale to Halewood. Mersey View Road, Halebank, Widnes, WA8 8LP. Spike Island. Wide-open acres of grassland, woodland and watersides for walking, fishing and wildlife watching. Call the rangers for information on events and activities. 0303 333 4300. Via Hale and Halewood to Widnes. Mersey Road, West Bank, Widnes, WA8 0DG. For more cycling inspiration there are various free cycle maps for Merseyside and the Loop Line available, simply get in touch with TravelWise Merseyside (0151 330 1253). Need some help? Haven’t ridden a bike in a while? Confused about equipment? If you need a little support getting started, the following could be for you. Cycling sessions can be tailor made to suit your skills and needs. Maintenance sessions will be hands on. Both are free for Speke residents to help new and returning cyclists! To arrange the time and place that’s best for you, just call Jennifer Boardman at BikeRight! on 0151 482 5700 or visit www.bikeright.co.uk/freewheeling Getting around and about by bike and train For longer trips, a short ride to the bus or train puts you well on the way. This makes it easier to get to school or your workplace, or when travelling into Liverpool City Centre where parking can be a problem. Bikes go free on all Merseyside trains. It only takes about 10 to 15 minutes from Liverpool South Parkway to the City Centre. Frequent Northern and City Line trains operate both from Liverpool South Parkway and Hunts Cross rail stations towards Liverpool Lime Street and Liverpool Central in the City Centre and outwards for stations in Warrington, Widnes and Manchester. To find out which bus or train you want, call Traveline on 0871 200 22 33 – a local person will talk you through the times, and anything else you might need. 090305/IS/TM/08O9/P Updated September 2011.
