It’s hard for me to believe it’s only
been six months since I took the
position of Executive Director at the
OACC, because
when I look back
at the things we’ve
accomplished at
the Chamber in
that short time,
it’s really quite
astonishing.
The Shop Local
Expo, networking
events at Scripps Mansion, aboard
the Princess boat, and at a Tiger’s
game, Thirsty Thursdays, luncheons,
ribbon-cuttings, a live Candidates
at Paint Creek Country Club, and
Dragon on the Lake boat races…
these are the things we’ve accom-
plished since I arrived in March.
Now, we are preparing for the 2nd
Annual Healthy Body Healthy
Mind Expo, and our annual Impact
Awards. There’s never a dull day at
the Chamber!
I have the privilege of working
with a dynamic, passionate Board
of Directors and Ambassador
Committee. Their individual and col-
lective commitment to the success of
the Chamber, the Members we serve,
and the community as a whole is
unlike anything I’ve experienced in
the past.
I must also say a hearty thank you
to both Alaina Campbell and Janet
Wolverton. They were instrumen-
tal in laying the foundation for the
Chamber’s continued success, and
have been wonderful mentors to me.
As your new Executive Director,
one of my goals is to meet as many
Members as possible. That’s why we
launched the “I’m In” campaign. I’ll
be stopping to introduce myself, get
to know you, and snap a few photos
with the sign you see in the pictures
above.
We’re working on some exciting
technology upgrades that will
enhance our Members’ experience
with the Chamber by improv-
ing methods of communication,
streamlining the event registration
and dues renewal processes, and
giving Members more control over
how their business or organization
appears on our website. This project
will be complete and ready to go by
the beginning of October.

Dragon Boat Races fuel camaraderie and competition for Chamber members
A bitter battle for the Golden PaddleThe Orion Area Chamber of
personalities—who tend to be a bit
competitive, particularly about
Dragon Boat racing. Within the
Chamber, the trash talk begins
months in advance. There’s the
Chamber boat, “Taking Care of
Business – fueled by Lockhart’s”,
president of the Board of Directors,
Brian Birney, sponsored
and rowed “The Birney
Directive,” and board
member (and Township
Supervisor) captained
“Orion TownSHIP.”
Comments were made,
things said that couldn’t
be unheard, and sud-
denly a new tournament
sprung up amongst
Chamber board of directors. It was
the advent of the Golden Paddle. It
was decided that an award would
be given to the chamber member
whose boat had the shortest aver-
age time in the Dragon Boat Races.
A little history about Dragon boat racingDragon boat racing is a mass par-
ticipation paddle sport. It origi-
nated over 2000 years ago in China
as a way to appease the gods. Since
then, it has become a major part
of Chinese culture, representing
patriotism and group integrity. In
the ‘70’s, the city of Hong Kong’s
Tourist Board made the decision
to host a Dragon Boat Festival, and
a few years later the International
Dragon Boat Federation was born.
In 1983, an international festival
took place in San Diego, California,
to the US. Lake Orion’s own Dragon
on the Lake Festival began as a cel-
ebration of the 30th anniversary of
the Orion Art Center, a fundraiser
for the OAC’s scholarships, classes,
camps and community outreach.
Each year it continues to grow and
bring race entrants from all over.
This year, the competing board
members were Chris Barnett on
the “Orion TownSHIP,” Chamber
president, Brian
Birney on “The Birney
Directive” boat, and the
Chamber’s boat “Taking
Care of Business.” The
In the end, The Birney
Directive was the fastest
of the three boats, and
the Chamber was the
most spirited of all the
boats. The Birney Directive walked
away with the Golden Paddle—
and bragging rights—this year.
Congratulations to everyone who
competed!

Healthy Body, Healthy Mind Expo
When you think of health expos,
do rows of tables covered in boring
medical pamphlets and people get-
ting their blood
pressure taken
come to mind?
I totally thought
the same thing
until I had the pleasure of being
in on the planning of this year’s
Healthy Body, Healthy Mind Expo.
Granted there
will be vendors
at tables. But
this year, we
came to the
realization that true health doesn’t
means different
things to differ-
ent people, and
there is more
than one component to health.
The Healthy Body, Healthy Mind
Expo chose to focus on eight com-
-
tual/behavioral
health, medical
health, environ-
alternative medi-
cine, nutrition, and family.
You’ll see vendors
ranging from CCF
Bank and the Orion
Township Public Library to Urban
Air Trampoline Park. There will be
a Soup and Stew Stroll to decide
who has the Orion Area’s
best soup, a Dessert
Dash to vote for the
most scrumptious
healthy dessert,
and food galore
as our vendors
offer up a
Healthy Taste
of Orion.
As with any health expo, you
can count on
Healthy Body,
Healthy Mind to
be informative.
But you can also
count on it to be fun!

LOCS recognized for
accountability
Lake Orion Community Schools
has always strove to be account-
able to their students, families
and the community. So it is espe-
cially gratifying to have received
a special notice from the State’s
Department of Education recogniz-
ing LOCS as one of only 58 public
school districts out of 540 across
the state as “Notably Successful”
in the recent Michigan Education
Finance Study. The report states
that Lake Orion has achieved the
highest measure for Above Average
Academic Performance, plus
another standard for High Absolute
Performance, Growth or Special
Population. State Superintendent
Brian Whiston wrote “Your district
was held as the high water mark
resources needed to help stu-
dents be academically successful.”
Whiston commended the focus,
hard work and commitment of the
District’s administrators, School
Board, teachers, students, parents
and the community to sustain a
rigorous, high-quality learning
environment.

During your working years, your primaryinvestment goal is generally growth – youneed your money to grow so thatyou can eventually afford the com-fortable retirement lifestyle you’veenvisioned. But when you retire, should you adjust your investmentstrategy from “offense” to “de-fense”?
Even while you are working, youdon’t want your portfolio to becompletely filled with growth-ori-ented investments, such as stocks. If it were, you would likely be tak-ing on a degree of investment riskthat’s too high because stocks will fluctuatein price – sometimes significantly. And if youonly own stocks, you could take a big hitduring a market downturn. That’s why youneed to have an array of investments – stocks, bonds, certificates of deposit (CDs) and soon. By spreading your investment dollars thisway, you can give yourself more opportuni-ties for success while reducing the impact ofvolatility on your portfolio.
Now, let’s fast-forward to your retirementdate. Once you retire, you may need to lookat your investment portfolio somewhat dif-ferently – instead of “building it up,” youmay now want to think of “making it last.”So, your first impression might be that in-stead of maintaining the diversified portfolioyou had when you were working, you needto switch to predominantly “safe” invest-ments, such as CDs and Treasury bonds, toreduce the risk of losing principal.
Diversification Is Still Important for RetireesAnd such a strategy might indeed be effec-
tive – if your retirement were only going tolast a year or so. But the chances arereasonably good that you could be re-tired for two, or possibly even three, decades. If that’s the case, then youwill have to deal with a threat to yourlifestyle that you might not have con-sidered: inflation. We’ve had low infla-tion for several years, but that couldchange in the future. .
To protect yourself against inflation, you will find that investments such asCDs and Treasury bonds are typicallynot much help. In fact, in a low-rate
environment, your returns on these invest-ments may not even keep up with inflation, much less keep you ahead of it. That’s not tosay they have no value – they can provideyou with an income stream and help loweryour overall investment risk.
But to defend your purchasing power, youwill still need some growth potential in yourinvestment portfolio during your retirementyears.
Your exact percentage of stocks and othergrowth-oriented investments will depend ona variety of factors – your projected longev-ity, other sources of income, family situation, risk tolerance and so on. You may want toconsult with a financial professional to en-sure that your portfolio mix is suitable foryour needs.
Many things may change in your life whenyou retire – but the need for investment di-versification is not one of them.
