A three-hour workshop on composting will be offered later this month at the Hoke Extension office. The workshop, “Treasures from the Earth: Compost and Vermicompost to Benefit Your Landscape and Gardens,” will be presented on Wednesday, January 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hoke County Extension Office, 116 West Prospect Avenue, Raeford. Vermicomposting is a process that relies on earthworms and microorganisms to help convert organic materials to a valuable soil amendment and source of plant nutrients while composting is the controlled biological de- composition of organic material through the generation of heat by microorganisms. The cost for the workshop (morning session and lunch) is $15. If you would like to jump-start your vermicompost- ing, you may purchase worm bin materials and one pound of worms for an additional $25. This cost includes instructions on worm bin construction. Rhonda Sherman, NCSU Extension Specialist, will pres- ent this one-day workshop on how to turn organic waste into nutrient-rich soil conditioner through composting and vermi- composting. This event is open to the public but seating is limited to the first 25 registrants. Sher- man specializes in vermiculture, environmental technology and solid waste management. The event is sponsored by the Hoke County Extension Master Gardeners, a group of volunteers who have completed a 40-hour training program under the tu- telage of horticultural extension agents, passed an examination, and completed a 40-hour intern- ship. The Master Gardeners volunteer in their communities, giving lectures, creating gar- dens, conducting research, and many other projects. In Hoke County, the Master Gardeners have partnered with the Raeford Woman’s Club to provide tech- nical expertise on preparation and maintenance of the garden pots that beautify Main Street. The group, which meets the first Tuesday of every month at the Extension Office, welcomes graduates from other programs to join their group. Additional information about the workshop and the Master Gardener program may be ob- tained from Debbie Humphrey at the Hoke Cooperative Extension Office, (910) 875-3461. Christmas has come and gone and many of our children have received a new mobile electronic device. You have probably noticed that it has really kept them busy and entertained since they opened the package. These days, most of us have smartphones, laptop or desktop computers, e-book readers or some other type of mobile elec- tronic device. As a result, we have changed how we communicate and interact with others and how we spend our free time. It is not out of the ordinary to see our children using the device like a pro, often using it better than we do. The introduction of all these new mobile devices has placed technology at the fingertips of even our youngest children. Research has shown that the length of time that young children are exposed to screen time—in- cluding television, computer, vid- eo or electronic games—should be limited to no more that 1-2 Limit time children are in front of screens Extension Today Brenda Currie hours per day for children age 2 and over. Children under 2 should not have any screen time as it has been recommended that the interactions those children have with people are much better. When children interact with people, they are being exposed to touch, nature, physical movement and making connections with others. It is rec- ommended that children have 2-3 hours of physical activity each day. Physical activity and exposure is necessary for your child’s healthy development. For some of us, who have older children or who work, this may be hard to accomplish. One in five children under the age of 3 have a television in their bed- room and tend to watch the most television and DVDs – more than 3 _ hours per day. But there are some ways that you can limit the time that they are exposed to the screen. If there is a television in your child’s bedroom, remove it and encourage family televi- sion time where you are able to monitor what your child is watching but also can talk about the program or movie. Make sure that children have breaks from using technology where the family is the focus. These breaks can include conversation or other family activities where all the members of the family spend time together. There are both benefits and disadvantages of screen time for children. Some benefits for video games is that it can provide an opportunity for your child to improve their visual-spatial skills, follow directions, and practice problem-solving and logic skills. Some television shows, such as Sesame Street, helps to promote school readiness, vocabulary, and book use for 3-5 year old children. Some disadvantages include the risk of childhood obesity, poor reading skills, displaying aggres- sive or violent behaviors, lack of imagination and putting less ef- fort into schoolwork. Remember that young children do not view what they see on television as we do. They have not yet developed the skills or have had the experi- ences to distinguish fantasy from reality. An increase in television or screen time can also result in lower language development for young children. Think about our own screen use. Turn off devices when not in use. As adults, we are able to tune them out but children can’t do that. If we are constantly on the computer or smartphone, our children may get the message that screen time is very important and may even be more important than they are or the time that the parent spends with their child. There are some ways that parents can help maximize their interactions with their child while reducing the potentially harmful effects of technology. Be a part of the playtime when there are electronic devices being used. Use the device to show your child pictures of their family, animals or the world. Talk about what your child is playing or doing on the device and use the opportunity to teach new words. Just like blocks and books have a place in a child’s life, so do electronic devices. With careful use and appropriate limits, they can provide fun opportunities for learning. Parents As Teachers is avail- able to all families who have a child prenatal to five years of age who live in Hoke County, regard- less of other services that you may receive. It is a free, voluntary and flexible year-round program where the parent educator comes to you.
