FOR A LOT OF REASONS, THE FALL CAN FEEL LIKE A TIME OF GREAT RENEWAL NEW CLASSES, NEW FRIENDS, NEW HABITS, NEW OPPORTUNITIES. A CHANCE TO SHED ANY OF THE BURDENS FROM THE PREVIOUS SCHOOL YEAR AND SUMMER. A CHANCE TO ALLOW YOURSELF A NEW OUTLOOK. I ALWAYS LOVE THE WAY FALL FORCES ME TO LOOK AT HOW FAR I’VE COME IN THE YEAR THUS FAR, AND WHAT ELSE I HAVE LEFT TO ACCOMPLISH IN ORDER TO FEEL THAT I’VE MADE THE MOST OF IT. ITS A CHANCE TO BECOME A BETTER VERSION OF MYSELF. SO, AS THE SCHOOL YEAR JUMPS TO A START, I ENCOURAGE YOU ALL TO THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT OUT OF THE YEAR AND HOW YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH IT THERE IS NOTHING BETTER THAN A NEW BEGINNING TO FORGE INTO UNEXPLORED TERRITORY. BEST OF LUCK IN THE FIRST FEW WEEKS OF SCHOOL. Ms. Tasia Says…

Give yourself the gift of a fresh start. Recently, I have had the pleasure of cruising in the passenger seat as my son practices driving around the city (believe me pleasure was not the first noun that came to mind when we began the experience). This week, I noticed all of the sunflowers that align the city streets, window sills, and corner stores. Ever since I was an elementary school teacher, the sight of sunflowers gets me excited about the start of another school year. Placing sunflowers in my classroom and in the teachers’ lounge was always the last touch before students arrived. The gift to myself and fellow teachers signaled the chance we all had to burst and grow, maybe slump a lil’ yet stand tall in the end, and the promise of granting every student a chance at a fresh start. Like you, the stunning variety of sunflowers amazes, encourages, and inspires me. And, like a sunflower, you will grow, slump, and rise again. Try not to let the weight of soil and other debris weigh you down. Enter the hallways of your respective high schools with the mindset and intention to

leave old habits, fears, and hindrances behind so you can stand tall in the fall!

NEW BEGINNINGS

Appliances (LEEP ’16)

Start strong by taking your academics seriously and

know that freshman year does count! Strengthen your

network by looking for the adults (and maybe

upperclassmen) in the building that you feel will be a

solid resource throughout your time in high school. We

all need a mentor! Get involved in school life through

clubs, sports and leadership roles and show your school

spirit. Seize the opportunities!

Trees (LEEP ’15)

Start strong by identifying areas to improve and forge

them early. Look for leadership roles with your

extracurricular activities. Also, remember that it’s never

too early to begin post high school planning. It’s all

about making that plan that best suits you and your

goals!

Fruits (LEEP ’14)

Upperclassman status comes with greater

responsibility, including college and career preparation.

College admission officers will be keeping an eye on

your grades throughout the year so start strong and

keep them up. If your grades are not the strongest,

challenge yourself academically and bring them up.

Make sure to connect with your school counselor

and/or college and career counselors and make use of

all their resources. Identify your path and access

what you need to reach the end.

Bones (LEEP ’13)

This is your year! It’s important to be organized and on

top of everything – it goes by so quickly! Make sure to

request letters of recommendation in a timely manner,

note all deadlines, and ask for help navigating the

process. Whatever your post high school plans may be,

a strong start to senior year will help you focus on

achieving your goals as you enter the next phase of your

life.
