OneerrorwasthattheOTwastobeentirelyrejectedbecausetheOT hadbeenentirelysupercededbytheNewTestament.Therefore,asaresultof thisidea,itwassaidthattheOTmorallaw(the10commandments)nolonger appliedeither,sincetheNTchurchwasabove/beyondtheselaws. Sayingthatwearejustifiedbyfaithaloneistoexcludeanyotherinstrument bywhichwereceivetheblessingofGod,thereisnootherhandbywhichwe mayreceiveGodsgrace.However,itdoesnotexcludeGodfromusing channelsbywhichheextendsthatgracetous?Welookforwardtoa discussionofthesacramentsinthisregard.

ThisArticledesirestosteeramiddlecoursebetweenunScripturalextremes, andprotectfromdistortedviewpoints.Ontheonehand,Romehadbeenvery clearaboutthemeritofgoodworks.Forexample(from6thsessionofthe proceedingsoftheCouncilofTrent,Jan/1547)WhosoevershallaffirmthatthegoodworksofajustifiedmanareinsuchsensethegiftofGod,as thattheyarenotalsohisworthymerits,orthathebeingjustifiedbyhisgoodworks,whichare wroughtbyhimthroughthegraceofGod,andthemeritsofJesusChrist,ofwhomheisaliving member,doesnotreallydeserveincreaseofgrace,eternallife,theenjoymentofthateternallife,ifhe diesinastateofgrace,andevenanincreaseofglory,lethimbeaccursed.37

Ontheothersideofthequestion,antinomianismandSolifidianism38were widespread,sayingthatsincejustificationwasbyfaithalone,goodworks werenotonlyunnecessary,butcouldevenbeconsidereddangerous(onemight trustinthemsomehow). Asonemightputthequestion,doesGodsgraceinjustificationgobeforethe exerciseofthewill,orfollowthewill?TheRomanistconfusesjustification withsanctification.39OthersadheredtoagermtheoryofJustification,that Godseesinfaiththegermofwhatweshallbecome,andthereforejustifiesus byanticipation.40Thismakesfaiththegroundofrighteousness.ThisArticle seeksthebalancethatisexpressed:Itisfaithalonewhichjustifies,andyet, thefaithwhichjustifiesisnotalone.41 TheexpressionofthisbalanceisfoundintheteachingofPaulandJames.
